20% poverty and 12.5% extreme poverty. 28% children live in poverty. That is Ghana. And it probably cooked. Kenya as of 5yrs ago - poverty was 35% with extreme poverty at 20% - and were reducing significantly.

Statistics show one in five Ghanaians live in poverty and one in eight live in extreme poverty. Alston says he finds it particularly troubling that 28 percent of children live in poverty.

Actually correction - Extreme poverty in Kenya - lower than Ghana.

Extreme poverty, defined as monthly household expenditure below 1,954 shillings in rural areas and 2,551 shillings in urban areas, fell from 19.6 percent in 2005/6 to 8.6 percent in 2015/16.

And it has an annual capacity of 150,000 tonnes. That is why you should be careful with numbers. 2.5M metric tonnes is a lot of rice. You put a rickety mill that has capacity of 50 tonnes a day...and claim it will do 2.5m metric tonnes. I have maize milling plant with 20 tonnes per day capacity so I know BS when I see.

Imota Rice Mill to employ 26,800 Lagosians, targets 2.8m bags of 50kg bags of rice per annum

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday defied the downpour to inspect the Rice Mill and Industrial Park project being developed by the state government at Imota in Ikorodu Division of the state.

The inspection tour of the project site, Gov. Sanwo-Olu said, is in fulfillment of his promise to continue all unfinished projects initiated by previous administrations. The Governor was joined on the inspection by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola.

Sanwo-Olu said the visit was to assess the progress of the project and also to get the contractor’s confidence on the completion date.

Describing the project as “capital intensive and strategic”, the Governor said the rice mill would be the biggest in the country when completed. The project, he said, is being built with a capacity to produce 32 metric tons of rice per hour and 2.8 million bags of 50kg bags of rice per annum. grin

He said: “The tour of the project site is another pointer to our pledge of continuity in governance. We are taking the pain to come down to Imota to assess the magnitude of the rice mill and industrial park project initiated by my predecessors. This is a 32-metric tons per hour rice mill, which is the biggest in the country. In terms of national importance, the rice mill is expected to meet 15 to 20 per cent of national demand for rice.”

After touring the project site, the Governor expressed satisfaction on the level of work done by the contractor, but said a lot of work still needed to be done. He assured that the contractor would be kept on site to ensure timely completion.

The Governor said: “By the end of this year, we should see the first phase of the project completed. It is not for us to just have the biggest rice mill, but to also begin a conversation with rice producers in rural areas to have massive cultivation and production through the mill.

“The mill is being built with a capacity to store up to 36 months of hundreds of thousands of rice bags. We have studied the entire value chain and we are speaking to other stakeholders to ensure this project, when completed, can galvanise people towards the objective of President Muhammadu Buhari, which is developing local capacity towards boosting agriculture and feeding the nation from local produce.”

When completed, the mill and industrial park are projected to generate over 1,500 direct jobs, while 254,000 indirect jobs were also expected to be created in the value chain.

The light industrial park on the project site, Sanwo-Olu said, is being built by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to boost small and medium scale businesses around the axis. The Governor said the park would have amenities that would make businesses to thrive and bring returns on investment to business owners.

Managing Director of CIBA Construction Company Limited – the contractor handling the project – Mr Josiah Samuel assured the Governor of the firm’s commitment to the agreed completion date, disclosing that the firm was re-mobilised back on 12 months ago.

Samuel said: “As at today, the Industrial Park is in over 60 per cent completion stage. But, the rice mill is being put together. There are different components of the rice mill. We are done with entire piling work; we have had to sink 700 piles on the site. The substructure of the mill is completed

“There are 16 silos to be constructed on the rice mill site, but the substructures of the six of the silos have been completed. We expect that before the end of 2019, this facility should be up and running.”

The contractor said weather was the main challenge it was facing in the construction work, promising that the firm would keep to completion date.

The twin project is being jointly built by the Ministries of Agriculture, and Commerce and Industry. The rice mill sits on 8.5 hectres out of the 26 Hectres developed for the entire project. The construction works are supervised by the Ministry of Works.

Not only is your regime managed - you have tonnes of forex controls.

According to IMF 2018

Country1 Exchange Restrictions and/or Multiple Currency Practices2
Ghana The IMF staff report for the 2017 Article IV Consultation, Fourth Review under the Extended Credit Facility
Arrangement, Request for Waiver for Nonobservance of Performance Criteria, and Request for Extension
and Rephasing of the Arrangement with Ghana states that, as of August 3, 2017, Ghana maintained one
exchange restriction and an MCP subject to Fund approval. The exchange restriction arose from the limitation/
prohibition on purchasing and transferring foreign exchange for import transactions by importers who have
not submitted to the commercial bank customs entry forms for any past foreign exchange transactions related
to imports, and which are unrelated to the underlying transaction. An MCP also arises because the Bank of
Ghana requires the use of its internal rate (i.e., the previous day’s weighted average interbank exchange rate) for
government transactions and the surrender of foreign exchange proceeds from cocoa exports funded through
the cocoa syndicated loan, without having a mechanism in place to ensure that, at the time of the transaction,
this exchange rate does not differ from the rate prevailing in the market rate (i.e., the interbank exchange rate)
and the rates u

We do not have any forex controls (you can bring or take as much as dollars as you want) - and our CBK doesn't print USD - so how can we managed to artificially inflate Kshs? If Ghana cannot do it - how can Kenya do it with even less forex reserves.

IMF were wrong - and used Kenya as guinea pig in a new methodology.

by simply borrowing to support the kshs

and that was what the IMF was talking about

When did we refuse for them or anybody out there to come and value KShs smiley. They put Kshs to scale - their own brand new scale - and said it was over-valued - we are still waiting for Kshs to heed to IMF - it seem defiant.

CBK cannot release market-sensitive data - We are not an IMF colony like Ghana.

IMF had said that the Kenyan shilling risks being classified as “managed” rather than operating on demand and supply.
“Reflecting limited movement of the shilling relative to the US dollar, MCM’s (Monetary and Capital Markets’) 2018 report on exchange rate arrangement to be published in February 2018 will reclassify Kenya’s shilling from ‘floating’ to ‘other managed arrangement’,” said IMF. Njoroge said CBK would only release data if it was no longer market-sensitive, adding that this was a global practice.
We do not comment on currency interventions until we judge that it is no longer market-sensitive. Check anywhere, the Bank of England, check how much information they reveal ” he said.

The governor added that the interventions were not done with “favourite players in the dark”, but rather during open market operations with banks, which knew whenever CBK intervened.
He also added that Kenya was an open economy with no controls over current or capital accounts.
The Central Bank, the governor said, operated a flexible forex market that did not target any particular rate but allowed the market to price it.

Yes kenya has Africa highest trade deficit of 11B dollars...but trade is not only way to get dollars. When you have an well-diversified sophisticated economy like kenya - you do not need to export Gold or Oil to earn Forex. We earn lots of Forex from 'exportable' services sectors.

We have very healthy forex reserves - playing around 6 months of import bill - 9B dollars - way above the recommended 4 months cover.

which economy are you referring to as a well-diversified economy?
