Kenyan child prostitute: 'I started prostitution when I started drinking'

Drugs, poverty, and tourism are driving child prostitution in Kenya. DW's Andrew Wasike spoke to the children and adults caught up in the industry.

Mbuthia estate is located in one of Nairobi's largest slums, Mathare. During the day, the area looks normal but when night falls in, girls as young as 12 years can be seen walking the streets.

"I started by smoking marijuana," says Natasha. That's is not her real name and she is just 14. "That's when I started knowing about these things. The day I started drinking alcohol was the day that I started prostitution." Her clients are men who live in Nairobi and the surrounding areas.

At night, girls as young as 12 walk the streets of Mbuthia in Nairobi

Natasha's parents died of HIV/AIDS when she was very young. She was HIV negative at the time, but was infected through the sex work. Her aunt acts as her guardian and is trying to get her off drugs. She even sent her niece to a rehabilitation center.

"I have tried rehabilitating her but she always goes back to prostitution," says her aunt. "I think that is because she is a drug addict. Also her peers, her only friends, are prostitutes."

"This is my life and I have accepted it the way it is," says Natasha. "I dropped out of school so there is nothing else. I am not looking for any help – that is what my guardian doesn't understand."

'The life I have lived has tortured me, ;' says male sex worker in Mombasa

Poverty and unemployment can lead to prostitution. And that can have consequences which are hard to reverse, as Diana Wanyonyi found out when she met up with two young male sex workers in Mombasa, Kenya.

Martin Kyana was brought up as an altar boy in western Kenya. He is now 37 and has been living with the HIV virus for 14 years. He is bisexual and started experimenting with his male primary school friend at the age of 11 but his parents found out and chased him from home; he was then left to fend for himself.

"When I was growing up I came to realize that I have feelings for both men and women. When I was in class seven I had sexual intercourse with a male classmate who had came to our house to help me with my homework. That is when my brothers caught me and started shouting. We were beaten thoroughly, that boy said that I brought him to my house so that we could have sex. My parents were very ashamed of me."

Martin thinks that it was because his mother was a church member and their family had a relatively high standing in the church that he was sent away.

Bringing a curse on the family

"I was told that I would bring a curse on the family because I had committed such an act. They felt that only a curse could have made me do such a thing."

At first, Martin found refuge at his aunt's place in Mombasa. But a few years later he was caught in a similar act with a male neighbor and thrown on to the streets.

"Most of the time my aunt didn't seem to mind when she saw me with the house helps but when I started hanging out with my male cousins, that is when she came running to intervene because she was scared that I would teach them to become like me. Then, one day, I was caught having sex with a 37 year old male neighbor who was the father of two children. I was just 16 at the time. The guy owned a shop near my aunt's house and when his wife caught us she told my aunt what had happened, and I was again chased out of home. That is when I ended up on the streets."

'I was raped on the street'

Having already dropped out of school, Kyana needed to find a job, but without much education he couldn't find anything to do. With nowhere to sleep, he ended up finding refuge in a brothel. Selling sex for money became his business.

20% poverty and 12.5% extreme poverty. 28% children live in poverty. That is Ghana. And it probably cooked. Kenya as of 5yrs ago - poverty was 35% with extreme poverty at 20% - and were reducing significantly.

Statistics show one in five Ghanaians live in poverty and one in eight live in extreme poverty. Alston says he finds it particularly troubling that 28 percent of children live in poverty.

Kwale, Kenya - It's a cloudy Sunday morning in Kenya's Kwale county and Sande Ramadan just woke up to get ready for another weekend of work.

Wearing a green vest and khaki shorts, he washes his face and proceeds to the living room where his wife Janet Wambui serves him breakfast.

"Thanks for waking me up, I hate being late for my client," the dreadlocked father of three tells his wife. "She asked me to be with her until next weekend," he adds as he sips black tea.

Ramadan is a male sex worker.

Wambui, his tall dark-skinned wife, works in the same industry. She came back home two nights ago after spending 10 days with a German tourist in an expensive cottage house, a few kilometres from Maweni village where the couple resides.

Ramadan and Wambui have been married for 20 years now.

But it wasn't always like this. One day in 2006, Ramadan was hawking clothes to tourists along Diani Beach in Kwale town, 30km southwest of Mombasa, when a German tourist approached him. He wanted a lady to spend some time with until his holiday ended.

The 37-year-old, who speaks fluent German and teaches his wife the language, promised the man he would introduce him to his sister.

"My husband came home that evening and asked me if I can act as his sister and take up the offer. After a few days of deliberation, I agreed," says Wambui, 38, sitting near Ramadan while tightening her black turban.

Wambui saw how life changed for other women who entered prostitution. She was a housewife who depended on Ramadan's income, which was too little.

"Life was tough for us. My husband's unpredictable income was not enough and when he asked me to accept, I had no choice," she says.

The family can now afford three meals a day and the children's school fees.

In Kenya's coastal towns, such stories are not new, especially in poor neighbourhoods such as Maweni. Husbands agree to rent their wives to rich tourists, mostly from Europe, without them knowing the women are their spouses.

"Why would I make another woman rich while I have a wife at home?" Ramadan said. "This was an opportunity for us to make some cash to pay our bills."
Tourism reliance

The East African country received more than one million tourists in 2016, according to the Kenya Tourism Board, a government corporation. This number translated into $100m earned in taxes, making Kenya one of the top tourism destinations in Africa.

In 2017, TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel website, ranked Kenya's Diani Beach in Kwale, where Ramadan and Wambui live, the seventh-best beach in Africa.

But all these accolades do not translate into success in the villages where locals survive solely on tourism.

Ramadan Juma, 43, has been a beach operator for more than 20 years. It's a sunny Saturday afternoon and Juma is at Diani reflecting on existence with his colleagues.

"Life is becoming difficult by the day," he said, wearing his black sunglasses to fend off the glaring sunlight.

On a good day, he earns about $40 by helping out tourists navigate the blue waters of Indian Ocean. But nowadays, he complains the situation has become desperate.

"We have been neglected. We depend on tourism as a source of living. Since most of us do not have a constant income, my colleagues go to the extreme and give away their wives to have a good living," said Juma, who also chairs the Diani Beach Boys Association.

Kwale County's chief tourism officer Anthony Mwamunga says the local government is training beach vendors and guides to gain skills to help them earn a decent living. He adds there's not much that can be done about prostitution.

"These cases are from poor men and women who have nothing to do," Mwamunga told Al Jazeera. "Tourists come here to have a good adventure and having a partner is part of it. This makes it hard for us to stop these cases."

Back at the spectacular white-sand beaches on the Indian Ocean, Tobias Juma, 42, woke up one day to find his wife had packed up and left him.

In 2012, he was working for an Austrian man who asked Tobias to hook him up with a lady.

"That is how I connected my wife to the Austrian man. All I wanted is my family to have a better life. But they fell in love along the way and they agreed to move to Europe," he said.

Before she left, Tobias' wife was providing for him and their daughter.

"She was our family's breadwinner. She would bring an average of $400 every month for my daughter and me after staying with the Austrian tourist. I have been struggling since she left," he said.

Government on Tuesday signed a deal with De Havilland Aircraft of Canada at the on-going Dubai Air Show to buy six Dash8-400 aircraft to start its national airline.

The plan to reestablish a national flag carrier has been in the works for some time now.

The newly signed agreement by the Aviation Minister Joseph Kofi Addah is expected to enable the country operate a new national airline.

Following the signing of the agreement, issues of financing and others are expected to be finalized which will be presented to Cabinet for approval and then to Parliament.

The new deal, signed by the Aviation Minister, Joseph Kofi Adda, is expected to boost Ghana’s dream of seeing to it that a new national airline hits the skies.

Boeing, Ghana sign MoU for three 787-9 Dreamliner jets for national carrier

Boeing is the world's largest aerospace company

Boeing and the Republic of Ghana announced today that the country intends to re-launch an airline starting with the 787-9 Dreamliner. The parties signed a memorandum of understanding at the Dubai Air Show for three airplanes with a list price value of $877.5 million according to list prices.

"There is a growing demand for air travel to and from Ghana and we believe the advanced 787-9 Dreamliner gives us an efficient and flexible machine to launch a regional network and eventually serve international destinations in the future," said Joseph Kofi Adda, Honorable Minister of Aviation and Member of Parliament, Republic of Ghana. "The 787 has an excellent reputation for its operational performance, fuel efficiency and passenger experience and we are confident that we have the right partner for our new carrier."

Adda says the carrier, to be based in Accra, would establish the capital city as a strategic hub that serves cities across West Africa. Future routes would include destinations in Europe, North America and Asia and the long-term plan is to open the airline to private investment and operation.

"Africa boasts a growing, young workforce and vast natural resources. We see the demand for air travel continuing to rise across the continent. Boeing is honored to work with Ghana in helping re-launch an airline to serve this vast market," said Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president of Commercial Sales & Marketing for The Boeing Company. "We look forward to working with the government on an integrated solution that includes the 787-9 Dreamliner and aviation services to support the new airline and provide a superior experience for its future passengers."

The 787-9 is part of a family of three airplanes that offer long ranges and unmatched fuel efficiency in the 200 to 350 seat market. The 787-9 can carry 296 passengers and fly up to 7,530 nautical miles (13,950 kms), while reducing fuel use and emissions by 20 to 25 percent compared to older airplanes.

Since entering service in 2011, the 787 family has enabled the opening of more than 250 new point-to-point routes and saved 45 billion pounds of fuel. Every day, there are more than 1,600 commercial flights on a 787 Dreamliner. This means that somewhere in the world a 787 Dreamliner takes off every minute. To date, more than 400 million passengers have flown on the airplane.

With 17.6 million Kenyans living below two dollars a day, Kenya sits behind India, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Madagascar in the number of people in extreme poverty, according to the report, Poverty and Shared Prosperity, 2018.

Kenya’s official data, however, shows that about 16.4 million were living below the poverty line in 2015/16 period, meaning these individuals could not afford a decent meal.

However, the share of poor as a fraction of the total population, poverty rate, is better with only four out of 10 Kenyans living in poverty.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has come up with an ambitious initiative, the Big Four Agenda, aimed at improving the living conditions of ordinary Kenyans by ensuring they can access critical healthcare services, have enough food, have a roof over their head and have jobs.

The report noted that Kenya was one of the countries with the highest number of poor which has managed to move up the rungs to become a middle-income country, though this exercise never translated into a dent in the poverty rate.

SGR now carries about 2M metric tonnes per annum. It designed with capacity of 20M metric - and about 35M metric tonnes when double-stacked annually. When it get there - those revenues - will grow 10 times - from 10B now to 100B - and it will pay it's debt (30B).

KR's SGR i expect will gross 1B dollars. Our port (KPA) is closing on 1B dollars revenue. They are in the same business....port does handling..and SGR does the transporting...which is an even bigger pie.

Our port handles 33M metric tonnes - soon we will get into 45M metric tonnes -and we will need another railway.

Mombasa Port now handles 33M metric tonnes - so whatever you're typing is nonsense - SGR is just 2yrs into operations - SGR has lots of room for growth - before it get to 20M tonnes - and we begin double-stacking containers to 35M metric tonnes.

This is not TEMA PORT Tema's weaknesses include the fact that it has a draught of just 11.5m and can only receive container ships with a capacity of 5,500 TEUs

Ghana's largest port, Tema handles about 12 million tonnes of cargo a year, including petroleum, cement, aluminum products, and textiles.

Mombasa handles about 3 times that.
