Hi Nairalanders,

What is your opinion on this topic.

In a situation where a woman receives some inheritance from her father or a share of her late father's property, is she expected to hand over her inheritance (money) to her husband?

Married folks over to you. Women, how will you handle your inheritance? Men, how do you expect your wives to handle her inheritance?

Whatever she inherited(money or property) will be useful to her immediate family,so the question of giving it up shouldn't arise..

The husband shouldn't even put his eyes on her inheritance..

I think it also depends on the individuals involved,If they understand themselves well, this shouldn't be an issue..

The Properties inherited from Parents belong to the Individual whose parents are the Principal owners.

If she wants to share with her husband, that is solely her decision to make.

By so doing, her husband can change the names of the property she chooses to dash him to his name.

Las Las, Their Children own it all at the end.

First of all, please list those places where married women can inherit properties.
Single unmarried daughters could be given an inheritance, but I'm not so sure about the married ones.

Is this happening to someone you know?
If so, where?

I'm interested...

First, this is not the issue here. And if I may ask, is there any law that states that father cannot include his married daughters in his will?

It's not about list of places it's happening. But how families decided to share their father's wealth.

In my side, we do give properties to women (married and single), It's a common thing with some of the ethnic groups in the Delta.

Now to the OP, the property belongs to her, she can decide to share, but not handing it over to any man, everything belongs to her kids anyway.

Yoruba families give inheritance to their female married and unmarried children.
Muslims give their married or unmarried daughters an inheritance even though it may be half of what the male children are entitled to.

This is very good to know, I had heard of this but still had my doubts considering the noise being made by gender equality advocates about Nigerian women not being allowed to inherit property.

I guess they made that up as usual, and the truth is women do in fact inherit properties from their parents. cool

See how he answered and backed it up with a location, that is the information I needed.

Interesting...

Even the culture which is usually touted as the most unfair to women is not that unfair after all.

Very untrue, most tribes share inheritance to women, I have seen a situation where a lady chanced her brothers and took most of their Dad's inheritance, thou she was the eldest.

You're probably one of those people who don't know that all property owned/acquired before marriage is NOT listed under community property.

In case your question is also for me, who you surround yourself with is very important if you have things of value and/or an inheritance.

Remember these are the people you'll be listening to and who would monitor you and all you have closely, pray for guidance and God's help to avoid pitfalls.

I suggested the op ask her relatives because this should not even be a question. If you don't know what to do about/with an inheritance you received from your parents, then something is wrong. At the very least, if your mind is doubtful, perhaps turn it over to a neutral company to manage legally and forward the income received from it. If you want, either register the business as a family one or turn over all or part of the money collected to your husband if you really trust him and there are no negating factors such as manipulators who dont have your family's best interests at heart.

My opinion, I could be wrong.

You conveniently forgot to highlight- the female child gets only half of what the male is entitled to meaning the male child gets double of what the female gets. That in itself still sounds unfair IMO, but it's still better than nothing at all.
Many South East Nigerian cultures do not give their female children any inheritance from their father's house. Though things are changing, and I guess the rich still try to settle their daughters. I may be wrong though.

A father may include anyone he wants or exclude anyone from his will. He may decide to bequeath his cat or loyal dog all his inheritance and disinherit his grown up children.
Problems only arise where there is no will, and the family elders are given the chance to share the deceased's properties

Majority of Yoruba do give their daughters, married or not, part of their inheritance. Infact, from my own side, Ijebu, it is SHARED equally or as the father willed.... Infact, the daughter's children sef have rights in that house....

...to the question. Such questions arises when marriages are faulty. When greed, distrust and selfishness reign in marriages. Personally, in a functional marriage, such issue doesn't need serious deliberations. Your parents are mine and mine are yours!

In my family, except if unmarried, inheritance are given to couple because they are regarded as a whole, so "ogun baba wa ni"... and that is why, the duty to your spouse's parents are non-negotiable.

However, in case of concern and cause for fear... a MAN will not put eyes into his wife's inheritance and he isn't expected to claim rights. It is at the discretion of a WISE wife to extend this hand of fellowship to the husband. But with the crop of current irresponsible guys in town... na war o

Who then has been feeding the masses with those lies about women not inheriting property in a terribly patriarchal society like Nigeria?

@OP Depends on what your inheritance is, you don’t have to give to your spouse. I’m guessing your question is if it’s mandatory to give it up.
If the inheritance is money, you don’t have to give it to your husband but if you use the money to invest in businesses, the profits from the business may be up for sharing because his support to you as a spouse is counted in what helped with creating the profit. The main capital itself will not be sharable unless you wish to.

If the inheritance is property, then of course there’s no law that states you have to give it to him.

Just give us equal share na. Nobody has ever asked for everything. Infact, many female children are more responsible towards their parents in old age than their sons. You cannot deny some cultures in Nigeria do not give female children an inheritance, and they can never even give them landed property anywhere. I mentioned the South East earlier (unless someone says that's not true), and they are a very large population in the country, so it does affect a lot of women. I'm sure other than S/E, there are other regions/ethnic groups with similar practices in Nigeria. A lot of women are affected (even from the S/E region alone) when we look at absolute numbers
