Uber will start audio-recording rides as a safety measure

Riders and passengers won’t be able to access the recordings
Uber will launch a feature to audio-record rides in the United States as a way to ensure passenger and driver safety, according to company communications accessed by The Washington Post and confirmed by Uber itself. The company says it plans to test the feature in Mexico and Brazil next month before deciding when to bring it to the US.
Drivers can set up the feature to automatically record all rides, while passengers will have to activate the feature through the app’s Safety Toolkit before getting into a car; it’s not clear whether they’ll have to enable the feature before each and every ride. Either way, riders and passengers won’t be notified when recording starts — Uber says they’ll get a general warning when the feature becomes available, as well as prompts asking them to grant the app microphone access.

Riders can choose to submit the recording to Uber’s customer support team when they report a safety issue. The recordings are saved in case a user decides to report the incident later.

riders and drivers won’t be able to access the audio themselves, but Reuters reported earlier this month that the initial rollout of this feature in Mexico and Brazil may make those recordings available to law enforcement officials upon request.

The feature may raise some privacy issues: several states have wiretapping statutes that prohibit recording people without consent from both parties to a conversation. This is further complicated when multiple passengers are involved. Uber says it is still working out these issues.

Uber has been faced with ongoing concerns about user safety, namely, its history of sexual assault cases. At least 103 Uber drivers have been accused of sexually assaulting or harassing their passengers, CNN reported last year, and at least 31 drivers have been convicted for crimes including forcible touching, false imprisonment and rape.

Since then, Uber has been taking steps to improve safety within its app, such as allowing passengers to dial 911 directly from the app and announcing a feature that allows riders to report safety issues during the ride. A year ago, Uber announced it would be releasing a transparency report this year containing data about sexual assaults, but the report hasn’t been released yet.

Uber has also had several cases of sexual harassment within its company. Former Uber engineer Susan Fowler wrote a viral account of sexism and harassment at the company. The ensuing investigation into sexual harassment at Uber led to the firing of 20 employees.

The rideshare company used to have a policy of mandatory arbitration for cases of sexual assault and harassment, but ended it last year.

You get it wrong. There's no hardship in anything I went through. Those were conscious decisions I took in my early 20s because I wanted to be a man. I did all of those still living in my parents' house. My mates were carrying babes up and down and forming big boys in the estate. I could have done the same, my parents had cars I was driving; but I had a different mindset. Still have.

For instance, my mum told me to come collect her car and use it for Uber when she learnt I was renting a car 35,000 a week to do e-hailing? I told her no. I still did my rentals. That's the kind of person I am.

Do you get it now?

With this rite here?
Your kind of person is not the type people should emulate bro.

Elders in the house.. I think I am here at the right time.

I work in a bank, been there for over 3years as an outsourced staff. Salary has never been more than 65k.

I work Mondays to Fridays, leave home 5am get home 7-8pm as the case may be. Sometimes I do weekends(ATM monitoring).

As it stands, there is no assurance of salary review, staff conversion or promotion.

Now an uncle offered me a direct tokunbo 2005 corolla for 2.7m on HP to give him weekly return of 25k or monthly return of 100k till I offset this 2.7m.

Is it advisable to take this car and go into ehailing. Again if I take the car, knowing that I need to give monthly remittances, how do I meet up when the job does not afford me time. Can I meet this monthly target?

Or do I quit my job and go into ehailing full-time while pursuing professional certification or do I just stay on my job and hope things "might" change?

all i can say is within the banking sector, you may remain in that position at that salary forever.
even in other industries, where the understanding is that sit in this contract role until theres a vacancy - it doesnt work any more
the question is what are the actual possibilities with uber? or are you just going to swap one dead end job for a different dead end job?

You have actually turned this table many times that you've forgotten what your stance was from the beginning

You started by saying it was wrong to talk down on a side hustle that pays... And that who cares about a cv these days(Meaning getting the Benjamins was more important)

You still said you sell clothes as a side hustle, compared to your accounting career that doesn't bring anything tangible

Someone asked you to resign then and you said No, you're in it for self development

So you sell clothes, to develop yourself in Accounting, but when someone was advising drivers here to channel their energy to career growth, you came for their head Abi?

You have said so many different things in different comments

I think what she’s saying is pretty simple. She only does her side hustle because her accounting job gives her the time to pursue extra bucks; but the side hustle is not her ultimate goal.

She needs the extra bucks to survive today, but in the long run, she should be recognized as a top level accountant. In the same vein, I think you’d have continued with Uber if it gave you the time for your current self-development plan. You had to quit because it didn’t allow you walk the path leading to your ultimate goal.

I think this issue is pretty straightforward to understand for everyone. Everyone contributing here have made sense, one way or another. We should just be more open to understanding each other.

Hi bro, want to know if this will fly. Just bought a Lagos use Camry, 1 month used, I want to register d car on bolt n uber. My point is,I don't have money now to re-register d car in my name, and considering the car still got 11 month b4 the licence expire. Can I just register on bolt\uber with the previous owner docs, thereafter when I gather money, will register in my name. Is there any deep measures they take to contact the original owner to know if he|she give her consent for the car to be use on d platforms? Urgent response is highly appreciated, thanks

Do the vehicle's Uber registration in your name and email, but upload the documents the way they are (ie, with the previous owner's documents).
There is no problem as long as they are all genuine and up to date.

Are the papers complete and genuine? If yes... Then go-ahead and register it with the previous owners name. There's no crime to it at all.

It would just look like you're driving for someone whereas you own the car.

I'm glad it was resolved. We are getting overwhelmed here and unfortunately did not respond soon enough. There are 51 cars here I'm trying to get out which is why it's taking a while to get to it. In the future, if an appointment is set it bumps one up the list.

Seriously bro... 60-70k per month is quite a huge money in the current Nigeria. It is also very little compared to the price of commodities in the market today.

In your situation, you don't have to the time to merge the two. So it's either going to be one for the other. You know what you want in life, if I were in your shoes, I will keep my fears aside, then take up the Ehailing line, as I will be making the money and at same time, have time for personal development.

Like I said 'if I were in your shoes', as I know Wat I am gunning for.

Just take your time, think over it, look at the future of both hustles and see the one that has a better 2moro say in 2yrs time.

NB, I wasted good 12yrs on a job as contract staff with the hope of getting a full engagement which never came. Rather, I was faced with 16 months of no pay (the lack of payment was not really fault of anybody) but I just realized I wasted 12yrs of my career because of crumbs.

So just check well.... Las las you will be alright if you make the right decision.

Well it depends on your long term plans.

You can speak to your Uncle to let you start paying after a month as you get yourself acquitted to the hustle (or he helps with maintenance for the first 2-3 months). If you have some money in savings, it may help you when faced with little car issues

I would advise you to merge the two for the time being and if you can't cope after like a month or two (you may have to use your salary to complement payments at times) you gat two options -

1. Resign and face the hustle squarely.
2. Get a good driver on rental (I hope you find a good person) who remits say 30k to you weekly. Here, you are still in paid employment and have a car waiting to be fully yours after about 2 years+

Good luck in your decision!

Exchanging insults and abuses on NL and social media is not even a think anyone should even go into. By the way, we are all civilized, maturity aside. We should be able to sanitize the way we interact with people both in person and online.

You spoke of the vacancy that suits you

If I want to get a job in civil engineering, physiotherapy, accountancy or med lab, how will uber driver for 50 years add to it?

I know this comment is not related to the topic, but I just want to answer your question
Oga you still don't get it do you? Those positions or professions you just mentioned what is their purpose? Isn't it to serve customers? The experience you derived from driving different calibre of people even down to sex walkers, mentally derange, sometimes your car even became an ambulance a lot more. Didn't those experiences teach you how to interact with customers?

OK, you wanna be a physiotherapist na rubort you won dey treat abi? Or you don't know an accountant attends to customers
Guy an interview is conducted just for you to share senierios base on your past job experiences and possible you can handle situations when matter arises and not basically about the position you seeking to occupy.

Ok, the last time you work was like 5yrs ago and with those times you did some side hustle like brick laying, uber, bla bla bla... And you're applying to a construction firm so you tell me you won't state it in ur CV u did pkunpkun work Or a driving job? You employer is looking out for attributes you don't know or can imagine. The driver to your truck may fall sick one day and skip work you can fit in to go buy gasoline or even do some other stuff. That's an edge you may have over another employee.

Most employers think this way, not just professionalism they look out for but attributes, skills. After all, a good company should train you in area they need you to work why they need your skills for any eventuality
