Unfortunately, as clean as his car is, he is spending far more than me to maintain 2003 Accord.

At the moment he is looking for money to change the transmission because the transmission slips when going to 4. I have no transmission issues with my troublesome 2003 accord in 5years. This is the 3rd 2008 Corolla I know that are having such problem. This is apart for the AC problem then come the shocks.

In support of what you just said. I also have a friend whose Toyota Corola would gulp about 30k every 3 months on shock the legs issues. And since 2015 my Honda has never gulped up to that on any issue except for fuelling.


About the tread, you have to also consider factors like Engine Replacement. Vital parts replacements and good maintenance. I don't think the life of a vehicle should be based entirely on the millage.

Most cars can run to 1,000,000 miles but it's the knowledge of the driver to detect faults is what keeps a car till then.

My experience with cars is 90% of engine knock comes from OIL related issues.

Your oil filter is leaking and you have no idea.
Your oil pump is blocked and you have no idea.

I think I can drive my next car to 900,000 miles with the experiences I have had.

There would have been a good answer for this but unfortunately, most cars' mileage stop working after kazeem's troubleshooting.
I drive a Mazda 626. I can drive that car to Abuja today if need be and be rest assured that I'm safe. Maintenance is the key. An average car's mileage should be 15000* age, excluding commercial and long distance vehicle.

The 2003-2007 Toyota corolla stops counting when its odometer clocks 299,999.00. I've seen that happen on about 3-4 different units. The engine would continue running fine but it won't rack up extra digits on the odometer.

Thats corolla for you, The sienna especially 2000,2001,or so mileage could clock a million miles that car is damn strong

Who is talking of mileage? In Nigeria, as long as the car can start and move. You're good to go. Check the cars that are plying our roads daily. You'll see some cars facing West but actually moving North.

What do you mean by manual compressor?

There is no limit on mileage, as long as you maintain it, it will last, a friend of mine owns a '94 jetta its over 380,000km still running.

People importing cars that are over 15years old with odometer reading of less than 90,000km are tampering with their odometers.

Never trust odometer readings when buying a used car in Nigeria whether tokunbo or locally used.

High mileage shouldnt scare you, especially if its highway miles.

I d rather buy a vehicle with 180,000km mileage that was driven on the highway, than one with 55,000km that was driven in city traffic.

Manual compressor is the crude name for a Fixed Displacement Compressor (FDC).

Automatic compressor is the crude name for a Variable displacement Compressor (VDC).

2008 Corolla mostly comes with a VDC from factory. Its operation is smoother without the regular clicks and jerks of the FDC. However, like the usual Nigerians we are, a more complicated system leads to more failure rate while properly fixing its faults and even the high cost of the VDC compressor makes AC technicians frown on it. Once your compressor goes bad, which happens sooner than later, you will be left with one option, change compressor to FDC.

I mostly agree with you but will rather say 50%. Cooling system failure accounts for a considerable part of engine failure before 150kmiles or after.

Engine failure in Nigeria due to cooling system failure is even greater than 50% due to the removal of thermostat and direct wiring of cooling fans. This is because over 50% of the engine wear and tear happens in the first 5mins of a cold start. This time is further extended to 10-30mins by removing the thermostat and further when fan is directly wired.

90% of our mechanics and drivers do not know the importance of operating a car engine at its optimum temperature and that it is as important as using the right engine oil to increase the lifespan of the engine.

We use the wrong oil grade, remove thermostat and wire fans directly. From that day the lifespan of the engine takes a dive.

That's nothing to a corolla

I've seen Corollas that barely did 100,000km before packing up.

And I've seen Corollas that clocked 600,000km plus and are still rearing to go for more.

It all depends on usage and maintenance.

Toyotas are generally know for longevity especially if the engine tyoe in use has been rolled out over a long span in time.

Toyotas dont replace engines anyhow. They make a new technology engine, they wont change it until a very long time. All they do is keep tweaking the same engine for every new car model. If it aint broken dont fix it.

After 4 years or 60,000 miles a car becomes a burden. Get rid of it.
