Abia will be hub of shoe manufacturing in Africa – Ikpeazu

by BusinessDay On Oct 3, 2019

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State has reiterated the resolve of his administration to ensure that the state becomes the hub of shoe manufacturing in Nigeria and Africa.

This is as he announced that the proposed NIBRA shoe factory at Obuaku in Ukwa West Local Government area and Abia State automated shoe factory, located in Aba, are expected to commence production in December, 2019.

Ikpeazu, while addressing journalists after a tour of some of his projects in Abia North Senatorial zone, said that the state is determined to be the major supplier of shoes, not only to about 200 million Nigerians that need them, but to others in Africa and other parts of the world.

“Apart from our artisans that are well skilled in shoe manufacturing, we have also entered into agreement with a Brazilian firm, who are also known in the manufacturing of shoes and that gave birth to what is today known as NIBRA. NIBRA is acronym for Nigeria Brazil.

“Infact, NIBRA shoe factory in Ukwa West is a shoe village, because they are building a factory that will employ over 6,000 people, where all kinds of shoes will be manufactured for export.

“And because we expect that shoe factory to start production any time from now, they have even gone ahead to start negotiation with the major shoe importers in Lagos to come and see prototype of the kind of shoes they will produce so that they would be major vendors of those shoes when they hit the market”.

The governor affirmed that work has reached advanced stages in the two shoe factories that are about to be opened in Abia State.

According to him, “the NIBRA Leather City at Obuaku is progressing rapidly, while the massive factory building for the Abia State Automated Shoe Factory, located in Aba, has been completed, with installation of machines imminent.

“It is my projection that despite the initial delays, our dream of automated shoe production will commence in Abia State before the end of 2019”.

He explained that the Enyimba Economic City Project is also fully on course with key preliminary components of the project being tidied up, stressing that formal groundbreaking and commencement of construction works will hold soonest.

Ikpeazu, who was elated at the progress of shoemakers the State took to China to learn automated shoe production, stated that they are poised to resume at the Abia State Automated Shoe Factory, as pilot producers.

“In the meantime, they are all doing well having expanded their operations and incorporated new skills. One of them just won an award for the Best Female Entrepreneur in Nigeria with a brand new car and N1 million, as award prize, which she has just brought to show to me.

“Who says that something is not happening for those who are dedicated, committed and ready to work in Abia State?.

“My commitment to creating jobs for the teeming youths of Abia State remains unwavering and with the number of different public private partnership ( PPP) projects we have on ground,

The State can invest more in agriculture and manufacturing if it could ensure these professions were made alluring to the youths through the avenue of entertainment. This is exactly the challenge Small Sister Naija (SSN) envisions to tackle. Do not miss out on the screening of prospective participants. On the deterioration of good road in enugu state.

Good evening Ndi Enugu....

The pictures below is but an evidence of ill governance in our dear Enugu State, these are picture shots on the popular road connecting Nkanu west and Nkanu East, this is the road to our very own dear Akpugo and Amagunze in Nkanu East, I believe this should be a pictorial definition of "Enugu is in the hands of God".

Amongst other bad roads in enugu state this particular road aches the most because alot of prominent people of Enugu pass through this road almost every month, even our dear governor passes through this route...

It's a thing of pain knowing that the state government gets an allocation yearly from the federal government to build new roads and to maintain previous roads, so my question now is what does the government do with the money that is allocated to fix this roads.

Festive period is fast approaching and many of our sons and daughters will be coming back home and this is the same route they're expected to use, our politicians too whose roots are from these areas are also going to use these routes but there's no sign of the government fixing this route anytime soon....

Standing on the side of truth as a son of Enugu, I urge this government to fix this road as our people are complaining, the situation here is literally bad, the other day was the government bringing down shops in Enugu town claiming to expand the roads whereas this is a place that needs roads, this is a place where our people use every day for their businesses, the roads our local farmers use to transport their farm yields.. Why can't this government channel that energy they are using to expand already existing roads to build roads in areas like this that lack a road at all ..

I must confess it's such a painful situation here, I urge this government to stop looting the money that is meant for road infrastructure but to put this money in use because most of the road accidents that occurs in this area is due to the bad road and for any soul that should be lost, that soul isn't "in the hands of God" but IT'S IN THE HANDS OF BAD GOVERNANCE .....

I'm writing for Youth Alliance and I'm writing to Aid Good Governance, building of good roads around the state and maintaining the old roads is GOOD GOVERNANCE

NIBRA: UPDATE ON ‘LARGEST SHOE FACTORY’ IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA
By AFN Editor On Aug 5, 2019

NIBRA/LEATHER CITY PROJECT UPDATE (ABA)

Sequel to my earlier update on our truth; the Abia investment drive truth, I had promised to update us on specific project progress and a special mention on Nibra where physical construction has commenced.

The update is in line with my personal and team philosophy of transparency and belief in doing what is right.

And suffice it to say that If for any reason, we encounter hitches on any project which is a possibility for projects of the magnitude we are prosecuting, we won’t make excuses but boldly confront and pursue its resolutions.

That said, NIBRA PROJECT is on course has good news for Abians;

1. Nibra is adding one more line to the already planned 3 lines to boost production from initially proposed 24 million pairs to 31million pairs initial annual output.

2. Nibra has secured upfront off take from Nigerian Distributors who already import about 350 million pairs a year

3. By October, 2019, Nibra is setting up the FOOTWEAR ACADEMY in Aba in readiness for training and hiring over 1,000 employees in her first and take-off phase.

4. The aggressive Q4 2019/Q1 2020 commencement of production timeline still been vigorously pursued and very feasible.

Construction updates include (pictures attached):

1. Completion of perimeter fencing

2. Completion of Perimeter lighting poles and street lights

3. Commencement of Administrative blocks

4. Procurement of foundation materials and Construction of structural elements of foundation.

5. Grading of all internal and external roads.

6. Civil works and excavation in preparation for installation of the pre-fabricated structures on going.

What some people might not be privy to is the under-belly strategic work playing out in the background, some of these efforts are more critical success determinants than physical work; market development, procurements and sourcing are few of these important links in the whole project value chain.

The Nibra/Leather City project is a well thought out project with a prefabricated structure already leaving the destination towards the project sites and installations commencing shortly as soon as the project takes delivery, loads of marketing efforts both locally and globally on-going with resounding results; one of them necessitating the expansion of production lines even before take-off.

Better Days ahead!

I am particularly interested in the rebirth of Aba, the great enyimba city.

Without Aba being functional and a solid center for innovation and industry, we can draw an analogy of Igboland as a beautifully painted car without an engine.

We must all join hands to condemn those responsible for the decay of Aba and demand a concrete urban renewal strategy to reconstruct the city roads, drainages and markets.
