IamAnderson:
he's already grown so it'll be harder to do but I feel if you introduce him to people that are nice and relaxed he'll calm down. Roscoe also barks and tries to attack people when I try to introduce them to him inside the compound but when he sees everyone is calm around the person and the person too is calm he'll eventually stop barking and start growling then I ask the person to give him a hand to sniff slowly, after he sniffs the person's hand he sniffs the person for some minutes then leaves them alone. if you want to introduce your dog to someone don't rush it,just be calm and the person too should be relaxed and quiet it'll go down easier. after the dog has seen the person is no longer a threat it'll calm down and get curious about the person. but even after the introduction, it not wise to leave the person alone with the dog until you're sure the dog is okay with the person. the last person that stayed with us few months ago for about a month got introduced to Roscoe and he got used to her and we started freeing him in her presence eventually but he still attacked her about 2-3 times when she went to open the gate by herself, she had to run out the gate to escape and she was also lucky I was there those times to stop him.
also it'd help if you didn't force the introduction the first day they meet, I usually do mine few days after the person arrives so by that time he'd have gotten tired of barking at the person and instead he'll be more curious to know who the person is. then if you want to introduce them on neutral ground (a place that isn't your dog's territory) just let them be calm and also wait for jack to calm down then ask him to sit before you let him sniff the person. tip: go at the dog's pace, let the dog lean forward to sniff first because if the person moves too suddenly that sniff can turn to a bite Trust me, I have tried everything. I even encouraged my cousin to give him treats. He would eat it all happily (wagging his tail sef). Just give him 30mins and he'll be back to hating. |

I don't really buy toys for him, I use different things to play with him. I also buy unbreakable bones for him to chew on to pass time. Two more questions pls. First.. Since I bought the dog.. I have never for a moment chain it down. Also I made a cage for it.. It has never for a minute been forced to sleep inside the cage.. My backyard is enclose with the only entrance been the kitchen door.. The is a big wall separating it from other flats.. So dog is free to move within this enclosure.. Its cage too is at one side of the enclosure. Thou it do enter the cage.. When the sun is hot.. But its doesn't really stay there.. Also.. We go for walks... Along a busy road every two or three days.. Dont you think this is the cause of my dog's inability to bark or even charge at a soul... Dude sniffs every person that comes to him... Not just that.. He legit chase lizard, birds and goats when we are out. Should I chain it and lock it up in his cage.. Or what.. Man is 7mintgs plus Secondly.. There is this dog food... I have read about it on nairaland.. Mixture of soyabeand, maize, crayfish and groundnut. Used to make paste.. Pls can you tell me the procedure to make that . and if you feel its good.. And can replace bingo food. How do you take pictures of your dogs. Mine is above my knee level. But whenever I take pics.. It looks so small and tiny on camera.. Plus he doesn't allow me to take his pics |

Plus he doesn't allow me to take his pics not chaining or caging your dog doesn't make it a coward, I don't know how that theory came about. even if your dog is free 24/7 if the dog is mature enough and an aggressive breed from a good bloodline it'll still end up aggressive. what's the difference between locking it in a cage and leaving it in an enclosed backyard?, isn't it still basically the same thing only that the space is smaller?. just allow the dog to grow up, 7 months is still young with time it'll pick up, you can also help by engaging the dog in play that'll help boost his confidence like; * tug-of-war(let him win sometimes but struggle for sometime so he'll think he won fairly). *you can play rough play with him too, get him excited and pad your hands if he can't control his bites and wrestle with him(I didn't say fight ooh, let it just be play, he'll know you're playing too, sometimes he'll be growling and attacking you playfully that means you're doing it right) * you can stage break-ins... that works too, if you have a friend that'll agree you can chain him where he'll see the gate and let the friend enter and collect something from the compound or pretend to harm you and see his reaction, this one should be done when the dog has started barking already because it'll give the dog more confidence to bark at people. when the dog barks at the person or tries to attack then the person should run away, then you congratulate and praise the dog or even give a treat, if you do this the dog will start barking at or attacking anybody that enters your compound or tries to pick anything from the compound fearlessly with time. these things usually work as confidence boosters with dogs, it helps conquer fear of strangers and also boosts their distrust and hatred for intruders, you can try them out and see if it'll work on your dog, I used all of them |

How do you take pictures of your dogs. Mine is above my knee level. But whenever I take pics.. It looks so small and tiny on camera.. Plus he doesn't allow me to take his pics then the dog food...I know the recipe and I've used it severally before but the truth is that it's not bad but it doesn't really bulk up your dog that much. plus you'll need to add a lot protein and vitamins inside to supplement it because most of it is just cereal grains which is mostly carbohydrate. I feel it's for smaller breeds because a mastiff or Caucasian or any other dog around this size range wouldn't really look their best with the meal. if you want to make it nutritious enough for a dog that size you'll have to add many things inside to maintain their muscle mass and body weight. let's be real, even if you put 2000# dry fish or crayfish inside do you feel it's enough protein for your dog for a month? no. and by the time you've supplemented it to be good enough, you'd see that the money you've spent is already the same with what you would have spent on another meal that'll cost less stress in preparing. the food isn't bad though don't get me wrong, I just feel it isn't worth it, I used to mix it with dry food, rice and chicken with egg when I used it to make it richer, the food alone won't really do much to be honest. I can still send you the recipe if you want |

Plus he doesn't allow me to take his pics if you want to take a good picture of your dog then you have to bend down especially if you're tall a dog is at least 2x shorter than you so standing to snap it won't give a good angle or show the dog's true size. you have to bend lower so you can capture the dog's picture well, that's how wildlife photographers take all those fine stock photo pics you see, sometimes you see them laying on the floor to snap a small animal and the pic will come out well because of the nice angle. just squat a little when next you want to snap him you'll get his real size. mine doesn't let me snap too lol I'm still struggling too, when I want to snap he will not agree to look at the camera any small noise he'll turn his head |

IamAnderson:
the aggression will come with time, you guys are expecting too much from puppies. and walking 2 times a week doesn't make a dog meek. it's even good to frequently socialise a puppy to prevent nervousness or fear aggression. when a dog isn't well balanced, it's aggression will be less reckless. do you think all those dogs you see that work with the military and help take down criminals are locked up or chained all day for them to be aggressive like that? restricting your dog from the world and letting it grow on a chain turns the dog into a very unstable threat to people both innocent and evil. fear aggression is not good aggression and it doesn't make a dog a good guard dog. allow your pup to mature naturally Actually, I think many of us mistake "territoriality" for "aggression". When we say we want our dogs to be aggressive, what many people intend saying is for it to display territorial instinct: trust me, nobody wants an aggressive dog. Roscoe sure has his territorial instinct active that is why he is free with you all in the house cos everyone belongs to his pack, but when a stranger steps in, he goes berserk on them. He is defending his territory from "invaders". For many of these dogs, you might be wondering if they can ever attack anyone or bite anyone cos of how well socialised they are and how you two have bonded (it might be giving you concern though that can it ever guard its territory), until you see the same dog giving a stranger the chase of his life and truly when you see the stranger run, nyoyneill know the race has a lot to do with the stranger's survival. I have once been on a Boerboel group when a responsible breeder that knows his onions (not new in the game), had to put down one of his clients Boerboel. It was way tok aggressive and couldn't be tamed. It couldn't reference anyone as alpha, it attacked even its owner: both father and mother, and even children... And they raise the dog from puppyhood. It was aggressive to both humans and dogs. Two bullets was needed to put it down cos one bullet couldn't do the job. It was the kind of dog that even as the owner when you enter your compound and find its cage opened, you run into its cage, and lock yourself inside before you determine your next course of action. Now, that is an aggressive dog. I hope sey my story no dey too much. By the way, I love Roscoe. Out of curiosity, do you know how to crop a Cauc's ears? |

agboedeh: He would just start barking and try to bite them. He is not socialized at all. I have a relative that came to stay with me for a month. Jack hated him and only started tolerating him after two weeks of his coming. But still hated him till d day he left. He sees humans, goat and especially chicken as enemies DAT need to be eliminated....lol. Its my fault tho. I didn't properly involve him with people while growing. Any suggestions on how to introduce him to new people? I think a starting point should be... For the visitor feeding him. At first, let then visitor be the knw to hold his food, and let Jack see the visitor witj his food, while you make sure Jack is secured so you don't have to separate "fight". Initially, you do the serving but the visitor brings the food to him). Gradually, the visitor does the serving.. With time, other factors will play out. But its important yourself don't feel nervous (though there should not be a reason for you to be) cos the dog will sense that in you, and will naturally want to protect you |
