Despite Border Closure, Foreign Rice, More Get Into Nigeria by agwom(m): 8:25am On Dec 01, 2019
Despite the fact that the Federal Government ordered the closure of the country’s land borders 14 weeks ago, Daily Trust on Sunday reports that foreign rice and other contraband commodities still flood Nigerian markets.

Hamisu Idris (not real names) steps out into the hot afternoon sun that makes everything, including the air you breathe, hot, at this time of the year in Gwagwalada, Abuja. He will go for shopping, strangely at a bus station in the town. A driver is coming from Katsina State, ferrying passengers and goods; and Idris, whose store of rice, spaghetti and oil has finished, will have to meet him to restock.

All over the town are shops with rice, spaghetti and cooking oil for sale, but Idris will not buy from them because they are local. The closure of Nigeria’s borders since August has ensured that foreign rice and other contraband goods are not available at shops in the town. But smugglers are making sure that these commodities find their way through Niger Republic and journey all the way to customers with a taste for the foreign. The driver Idris is meeting specialises in moving the illegal goods by bribing his way across over a 500 kilometre distance to deliver them at Gwagwalada. When Idris meets him this time, the driver told him about slight increase in prices, but assured him about supply. “He was so sure that he asked me to just mention the number of bags I wanted and he would bring them,” Idris, said. He was told that a bag of foreign rice is now N23,000 and a jerry-can of cooking oil goes for N12,500.

A month earlier, Idris purchased a bag of foreign rice at the rate of N21, 000 from the driver. At the time, the driver told him how easy it was to supply foreign rice from Maiaduwa border to Nigeria’s capital, passing though hundreds of security gates. First, the bag of rice needs to be concealed inside a bigger bag that is padded with another food item, millet or corn. When it is not properly concealed, security agents, mostly Customs officers, will advise the driver on how to neatly disguise the original content, before accepting a bribe to let him pass.

Going by the laws of demand and supply, it's only a matter of time before the sides cave-in

When local production can't meet local needs, then foreign intervention is likely

It's 14 weeks now, how would it look like 36 weeks from now?

The question is that does the north have a border? That place is as porous as water in a basket...

APC and Buhari be deceiving themselves. They closed southern borders and left northern borders. During the peak of boko haram activities, why didnt they close the border to prevent influx of terrorists from Cameroon and Niger...

Nigeria has no business farming rice

With little imput a hectare of land can produce 50 tons of casava in a year ,if the right seeds n fertilizer is used thats over 1 million naira wealth created ....without further processing

Converting this to chip makes 12.5 tons of chip sold at around 450 dollars per ton....thats roughly 2 million worth of goods

Now watch

If same land is used to produce rice ...if u are luck u get 2 tons thats around 300k max

Now based on this won't we be better of producing casava chips sale to China then import rice ?

We would still have 1.5 million change on same land

The above is called theory of comparative advantage ....its capitalism in action

Buhari is a socialist ,believes we can produce everything which would reduce our total GDP

The borders in the north are open, this was said by a serving senator from Katsina, the state of Mr. President.

Who is fooling who in this country.
Southern Borders closed

Northern borders open

Rubbish, one Nigeria indeed.

GOOD BUT

you forgot that rice is a Fast Moving Consumer Good that must have been eaten and bought 100 times before the chip used in making that eletronic will be requested by the end user again.

Therefore there is better turnover for Rice according to your analysis here,

Na so, those of us that had been eating local rice even before the border closure, all our teeth had fallen off.
I would've believed you if you said you were served a plate of stones and some grains of rice sprinkled on it

Most place can only farm rice once per year even if u do twice u still make 700k ...1.3 million less than farming casava

Please cassava chip is for animal feed in China not electronics please....demand is there ...we can't even meet demand

It doesn't make economic sense farming rice ...unless the rice can only grow rice. ...

U can inter crop cassava n corn or soy bean to increase income too

I repeat we have no business Planting rice

We all know you have rice processing machine in between your teeth that separates stones from your Nigerian rice.

This is the silly thing about Buhari as a president. He can't think logical hence those who does for him do it to their own advantage while the country is terribly messed up.

Same scenario in 1983-85.Same scenario today. Same will it remain till this catastrophe leaves our national life.Buhari is an irredeemable failure
