This French general agrees with me.

Top French general says full victory in Africa not possible

France will never secure total victory over Islamist insurgents in West Africa, its top general said after 13 soldiers died in a helicopter crash during a combat mission in Mali, France’s worst single loss of troops in 36 years.

General Francois Lecointre said France’s military role in the Sahel region was “useful, good and necessary”, but it was hard to see the moment when the war would finally be won.

The remarks could embolden opponents of President Emmanuel Macron, in particular the far-left, who demand France plans a way out of the conflict.

“We will never achieve a definitive victory,” Lecointre, chief of staff of the armed forces, told France Inter radio.

*PRESS RELEASE*

*BOKO HARAM CRIMINALS SUFFER ANOTHER DEBILITATING DEFEAT IN THE HANDS OF RESILIENT COMBINED TROOPS*

The combined troops of Sector 3 Operation LAFIYA DOLE and Sector 2 of the Multinational Joint Task Force (Chadian Forces) led by Commander Sector 3 Operation LAFIYA DOLE on 28 November 2019, dealt a decisive blow on the criminal ISWAP terrorists at Duguri Island in the extreme Northern Borno area.

The resilient troops, supported by the Air Task Force OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE, while marching against extreme odds posed by marshy flooded terrain to clear NJARWA and DUGURU Villages made contact with the criminals who were hibernating in the area. The troops, having successfully cleared both villages, took up a harbour position at which remnants of the criminal ISWAP terrorists decided to cowardly attack them from their rear. The dogged troops immediately responded with superior firepower, outmanoeuvred the criminal insurgents and handed them a well deserved defeat in the process. The Boko Haram criminals who were mounted in 4 Gun Trucks with the intention of overrunning the troops harbour position from the rear. In the aftermath of the fierce fire fight that ensued, the gallant troops succeeded in neutralizing 13 of the ISWAP criminals. The troops also captured 3 Gun Trucks, 3 Anti Aircraft Guns, 12 AK 47 Rifles, 3 Bandoliers of Anti Aircraft Guns and 270 Rounds of 7.62 mm Special ammunition among other critical assets. Unfortunately, 4 of our highly courageous troops were wounded during the encounter. Fortunately, 2 of the wounded soldiers have already stabilized in a nearby military medical facility while the other 2 are awaiting air evacuation for further medical management.

The Theatre Commander Operation LAFIYA DOLE, Major General Olusegun Adeniyi, on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, commends the troops for their gallantry and professionalism in the face of very daunting whether and terrain conditions. He also extended his appreciation to the Force Commander, Multi National Joint Task Force for the wonderful collaboration and support demonstrated by his troops so far. He further urges the troops to keep the pressure on the criminal Boko Haram elements until they are totally wiped out.

HMOD COMMENDS NAF ON CAPACITY BUILDING INITIATIVES, INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT AS NEW SET OF SPECIAL FORCES, BACK DOOR GUNNERS GRADUATE IN BAUCHI

The Honourable Minister of Defence (HMOD), Major General Bashir Salihi Magashi (retired) has commended the leadership of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), led by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, for its capacity building initiatives and infrastructural development efforts towards improving the living standards of personnel for enhanced professional performance. “I believe that the achievements recorded by the NAF are results of your intensive efforts towards repositioning the Service to adequately respond to Nigeria’s security imperatives. I must say that we are proud of you and we urge you not to relent in your efforts”, the HMOD said. This commendation was made today, 29 November 2019, during the combined graduation ceremony of 162 personnel from Special Forces (SF) Course 5/2019 and 46 from the Helicopter Backdoor Gunners (HBDG) Course 5/2019 at the Regiment Training Centre (RTC) Annex in Bauchi State. The HMOD also specially applauded the NAF for training 10 Nigeria Police Force (NPF) officers alongside NAF personnel as HBDGs. According to him, “this singular act, not only promotes inter-Service cooperation but will go a long way in substantiating the fact that no Service can single-handedly prosecute a war or conduct an operation without the support of the other”.

Speaking further, Major General Magashi, who was the Special Guest of Honour (SGOH) at the occasion, added that the efforts of the NAF in building capacity of personnel, were obviously yielding desired results. According to him, this could not have come at a better time as the country was experiencing security challenges that were increasingly requiring the intervention of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN). “Countering these threats, which are synonymous to asymmetric warfare methods, requires a different approach including the use of Special Operations Forces”, he added. He therefore commended the NAF’s efforts at rapidly developing special operations capabilities to a strength of over 1,000 SF personnel, deployed in various theatres of operation within the country.

While expressing delight with the display exhibited by the graduating personnel, the HMOD equally lauded the proactive steps taken by the NAF in protecting its helicopters from flank attacks during internal security operations with the training of the HBDGs. He urged the graduands to use their newly acquired skills to attain the operational objectives of their respective Services in future deployments. He also enjoined them to continue improving their proficiency in their respective areas of expertise as they play their part towards ensuring a safer and more secure Nigeria. The HMOD stated that the Ministry, on its part, would continue to make concerted efforts to ensure that the AFN is well equipped with modern equipment to effectively carry out its constitutional roles.

Earlier in his remarks, the CAS recounted how, upon assumption of office, he realized the capability gap in SF operations which necessitated the expansion of the NAF Regiment Speciality, scaling-up of SF training as well as the establishment of Quick Response Units across Nigeria for rapid response and deployment of air assets during crises. He noted furthermore that, in its quest to look inwards for the purpose of minimizing the cost of training, the NAF had made efforts to localize the training of SF and HBDG personnel using its own personnel. He said this was achieved through collaboration with the British Military Advisory Training Team (BMATT) and an Israeli Firm, the Four Troops Company, for initial in-country training of SF personnel as well as the eventual training of SF instructors.

Air Marshal Abubakar noted that, so far, the NAF had trained a total of 3,143 personnel on Force Protection in Complex Air-to-Ground Environment (FPCAGE) and 778 SF personnel, in-country. Out of these numbers, he explained that a total of 330 SF and 950 FPCAGE personnel were trained solely by the NAF’s SF Instructors. These efforts, he said, were in line with one of the key drivers of his Vision, which focusses on “robust and result oriented training for enhanced professional performance”. The CAS stated furthermore that, in order to reduce the pressure on training facilities at the RTC Main Campus in Kaduna, the Service decided to create an RTC Annex at Bauchi. According to him, the objective is to ensure that personnel train in a realistic North-East environment which is currently the hot bed of security challenges.

Speaking further, the CAS noted that the NAF has once again demonstrated the importance of synergy in training, with the involvement of 10 personnel of the NPF on the course. “It is believed that other sister security agencies would key in to this arrangement in the future”, he added. While pledging the unwavering dedication of the Service towards ensuring the security of Nigeria and Nigerians, Air Marshal Abubakar seized the opportunity to thank the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, for his untiring support for the NAF. “The commitment displayed by the current administration towards increasing the Air Power capabilities of the NAF through the acquisition of platforms is being paid back by personnel with enhanced professionalism on our part”, he added. He equally thanked the National Assembly, especially the Chairmen and members of the Senate and House Committees on Air Force, as well as the Government and people of Bauchi State for their continued support to the Service.

In his welcome address, the Air Officer Commanding Ground Training Command (AOC GTC), Air Vice Marshal Idi Amin, while commending the CAS for emplacing the necessary facilities for effective training such as the Commando Village, four new blocks of accommodation with a capacity of housing 240 students as well as the ongoing construction of an obstacle course and rappelling tower, highlighted that a significant aspect of the graduation was the joint training of NPF and NAF personnel as HBDGs, which, he said, was in line with a key driver of the CAS’ vision which focusses on “comradeship, regimentation and inter-Service cooperation”.

The occasion featured tactical demonstrations by the graduating students at the NAF Commando Village. This included unarmed combat display, using the “Krav Maga” technique, as well as an air-ground assault simulation exercise, which involved engagement of an enemy location by an HBDG and rappelling of SF personnel into a hostile environment to flush out bandits from their camp. Awards were also presented to graduating students who distinguished themselves on the course, which included an Outstanding Bravery Award for the first NAF female Regiment Rappel Instructor and first female Backdoor Gunner, Lance Corporal Basirat Salaudeen.

Dignitaries at the event included the Chairmen and Deputy Chairmen of the Senate and House Committees on Air Force, the Inspector General of Police and representatives of the Chief of Defence Staff and other Service Chiefs as well as the representatives of the Executive Governor of Bauchi State and the Emir of Bauchi, among many others.

What? You disagree completely with the fact that 30 years of bad and corrupt military rule by Nigerian Army ruined Nigeria till massive insurgency became a new way people tell goverment they want something?

Low levels like lance corporal among Nigerian soldiers are trying but top leadership is not doing well with faulty procurement and lack of willingness to modernize our obsolete army. France has hardly ever lost an FOB, unlike Nigeria that lost army bases like 100 times.

France should devote her super power military might to rescue Mali? Why? Mali is France or Africa is Europe? Do you know the hundreds of billions of dollars it will cost the economy of France to deploy a large army far from home? Afghanistan and Iraq large scale deployments almost bankrupted American economy now in heavy debt.

Those 4,000 French troops are not fighting with aim of defeating insurgency in Mali, they are there to protect French uranium and gold mining businesses as well as keep loyal Mali goverment loyal to France forever.

France actually wants to maintain these volatile situations where Mali will forever need French troops helping Making so modern day colonialism can last forever. French man no care if half of Mali has some Tuareg rebels, it's not Frenchman's fatherland. All they wish to do is send a minimum size small brigade level force enough to keep Malian uranium and gold flowing into France's economy forever. If France really wants to wipe out Mali rebels, they won't send only 4,000 men without a single Leclerc tank,
to join a few uncommitted peace keepers who don't want to die in Mali for black man's sake, just want deployment salaries from UN. Some of the peace keeping European countries in Mali went there to use Mali deployment to meet up required track record for application for permanent seat at UN almighty security council, no foreign nation is there to die for Mali by trying to wipe out battle hardened rebels for 'black Africans who cannot manage their country well' as they call us.

Nigerian soldiers have their own native homeland to die for if need be. Lt. Gen. Buratai COAS is son of the soil of Borno, but French Army chief of staff is not a son of Mali, he won't risk much to free Mali, his army is there to colonize for mineral resources not to make Mali a better nation.

I repeat, 30 years of bad and corrupt military rule by Nigerian Army created all today's insecurity. You can disagree with your own life history if you wish, na you sabi o. grin

Ten likes! Don't forget another overlooked aspect of all these foreign Western deployments:real life training for specops and light infantry forces against an under equipped enemy
. Do you think Jean-Fraude's spec ops would be as comfortable going head to head against German mech. infantry or ragged dusty arse ISIS?

I still remember the outbreak of the BH war in Bauchi 2009. Mohammed Yusuf, then leader was shot after a battle that killed at least 700 people-Al Jazeera played the clip. All was quiet at first and things snowballed with the first suicide bombings in black Africa but the UN Abuja building convinced me of foreign backing for the terrorists. All the NA shortcomings highlighted by serving and ex officers and men have still not improved in a decade!? The personal gear eg MOLLE,force multiplier like radios, standardisation of armoured vehicles, dearth of COIN platforms like choppers, attack aircraft, coy FOBs are being overrun while adoption of proper purpose built tactical formations like the Field Force are still lacking!

In that time the KDF has invaded S Som captured the Al Shabab HQ Kismayu dealt with a putative insurgency on the border in Lamu, killed 3500+ enemy lost one base to a criminally careless commander. I was in Lamu recently and you can drive to Kismayu-in the daytime.
Tbh,I think your Elites prefer this situation.

*PRESS RELEASE*

*UPDATE ON FAILED ATTEMPT TO OVERRUN NIGERIAN ARMY TROOPS' DEPLOYMENT AT BABBAN GIDA*

It could be recalled that, Babban Gida, the administrative Headquarters of Tarmuwa LGA of Yobe State came under attack by some marauding Boko Haram criminals on 27 November 2019. The criminal terrorists sneaked into the peaceful community on board 9 Gun Trucks to unleash terror on the innocent citizens while simultaneously attempting to overrun the troops deployment in the community. In the process, the criminal insurgents looted some properties and abducted some citizens with obvious intent to conscript them into their criminal fold.

In a bold and resilient response that thwarted the attempted infiltration by the criminal insurgents, the gallant troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE and elements of Yobe State Vigilantes supported by Air Task Force Operation LAFIYA DOLE immediately engaged the criminal insurgents. After a fierce fire fight that lasted about one hour, causing them to withdraw in disarray. During the exploitation that ensued, the troops put up a hot pursuit of the marauding criminals and in the process discovered the shattered remains of one of them along their withdrawal route while one Rocket Propelled Gun 7 (RPG 7) bomb was also captured from the criminals. The troops later exerted their dominance within the community and beyond. Normalcy has since been been restored to the community.

It is gratifying to note that all 20 abductees of the criminal insurgents including a team of medical personnel comprising one Musa Bulama (a medical doctor), Gana Yelwa (a Nurse) and Malam Bala Musa (Yobe State Primary Healthcare Ambulance driver) have been successfully rescued by the troops. Additionally, a Toyota SUV Ambulance belonging to the Yobe State Primary Healthcare Board earlier snatched by the insurgents was equally recovered by the gallant troops. Others equally rescued are Adamu Madugu, Tukur Abdulkarim, Ibrahim Sulaiman and 14 males between the ages all of whom are teenagers of 13 - 16 years.

The Theatre Commander Operation LAFIYA DOLE Major General Olusegun Adeniyi on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai commends the troops for their exceptional display of gallantry, professionalism and responsiveness. He has further enjoined them to keep the pressure on the criminal Boko Haram elements until they are completely neutralised.

Why do you think the Leclerc Tank would make any difference?

You need to make comments based on facts, you're making posts on emotions.

With all these France has been in Mali for 6 years

Add to this that the leclerc is too heavy for sahara desert north mali and to powerful to use for small mobile groups of insurgency .

You rate ISIS so high? Havent heard of any event so far where ISIS make high scores against SpecOps. They die like flies but they have thousands of supporters who are ready to pick up the guns of their fallen companions at anytime. You chop on head of the snake and an new one grows immediately. ISIS is a ragtag militia same as Taliban or our Bokos. But you are right the NATO deployments to Syria and Afghanistan are mainly low-risk operations with drone surveillance, 24h available Close Air Support and some tactical raids by SpecOps against low-value targets.

CAS COMMENDS AIR TASK FORCE ON SUCCESSES, CHARGES THEM TO REMAIN RESOLUTE AS HE COMMISSIONS NEWLY COMPLETED PROJECTS IN MAIDUGURI

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has commended the Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE for its sustained air operations that have resulted in the destruction of several terrorists’ hideouts and neutralization of scores of their fighters in the Northeast Theatre. The CAS made this commendation today, 30 November 2019, in an interactive session with air and ground crews of the ATF during an operational visit to Maiduguri. While in Maiduguri, the CAS also commissioned some newly constructed residential accommodation for personnel and undertook a visit to the Dalori Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp to inspect facilities at the NAF Level II Hospital as well as assess the conduct of the school feeding programme.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the CAS said the newly constructed and furnished block of 10 single bedroom flats and 2 blocks of 6 x 2 bedroom flats for officers, like the many other projects executed in Maiduguri in the last 4 years, were part of his resolve to emplace adequate infrastructure that would enhance personnel welfare for improved professional performance. He said this was premised on the fact that an average NAF personnel, who is often entrusted with the care of equipment worth millions of dollars, would always put in his best when he knows that his welfare and that of his family are well catered for. He said the NAF would therefore continue to create the enabling environment through the provision of necessary infrastructure and other welfare packages to enable personnel, especially those in operational areas, effectively accomplish their assigned tasks. In that regard, he disclosed that the Headquarters ATF Medical Centre, along with its Cancer Screening Centre, would soon be upgraded with additional facilities, such as new laboratories and operating theatres to provide better services which, he said, would continue to be available to members of the host communities and IDPs.

While appealing to the beneficiaries to ensure the facilities are properly maintained, the CAS emphasized that they must reciprocate by building on the successes so far recorded in the fight against insurgency by ramping-up the momentum. He added that they must however remain vigilant and be conscious of personal security as well as the security of equipment and environment, while at the same time obeying lawfully constituted authority. “You must redouble your efforts to ensure peace is fully restored to the Northeast to enable people go about their normal activities, without fear of harm or molestation”, he added.

The CAS noted that the modest achievements so far recorded by the Service would not have been possible without the unflinching support of the Federal Government. He therefore expressed his gratitude to the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, for his immense support to the NAF. He equally thanked the National Assembly, especially the Chairmen and members of the Senate and House Committees on Air Force, as well as the Government and people of Borno State for their encouragement to the NAF in its operations.

Earlier in his welcome address, the ATF Commander, Air Commodore Precious Amadi, stated that the commissioning ceremony was yet another demonstration of leadership that gives special attention to the motivation of the personnel through the provision of conducive work and home environments for enhanced professional performance. He said the projects would not only boost the morale of the personnel of the ATF, but also enhance their service delivery in the fight against insurgency and terrorism.

Before proceeding to Dalori, the CAS inspected some ongoing projects at the NAF Base Maiduguri that were nearing completion. These include the Ammunition Depot, Senior Non-Commissioned Officers’ (SNCO’s) Mess as well as an all-purpose Hangar, which was relocated from the 013 Quick Response Force location in Minna, Niger State, for use in Maiduguri to enhance the maintenance of aircraft under the ATF.

After inspecting facilities at the Dalori IDP Camp, the CAS expressed delight that the Level II Hospitals established by the NAF at Dalori and Bama in 2015 and 2016, respectively, had continued to effectively provide healthcare services to those affected by the insurgency. He said the NAF would sustain the services as well as the school feeding programme that has been providing daily meals for over 1,000 pupils in the 2 IDP Camps.

Dignitaries present at the commissioning ceremony and visit to the Dalori Camp included the Chief of Staff to the Borno State Governor and the Chairperson Borno State Emergency Management Agency as well as Branch Chiefs from Headquarters NAF, Theatre Commander Operation LAFIYA DOLE along with many other senior officers. The CAS and members of his entourage have since returned to Abuja.

Cage Armour or "Slat" Armour works by detonation a shaped charge such as an RPG when shot at it before it reaches the actual armour of the vehicle. It generally has a 50% chance of successfully protecting the vehicle.

However, for it to be effective, the distance from the slat armour to the surface of the vehicle has to be twice the diameter, which is absent on the NA fabricated vehicles. I don't think it'll be effective at all. Other examples of slat armouring on vehicles in NA inventory can be seen on the BTR-4E

RPGs have shaped charges that have to burn their way through armour. The slats you see (like metal louvres) are made of high temperature resistant steel maybe with tungsten alloys. The slays break up the incoming shaped charge explosive before of after the fuse detonates. The slats just scatter everything over a wider.area so there is no concentration of explosive force and shaped charge that is too.much for the armour

Barrier made of rods or plates or nets etc

Normal steel or hardened steel or alloys or composites etc even thick blocks of wood will do .

Prevents the impact fuze of warhead from triggering

Or

Damages the warhead or fuze

Or

Forces the warhead to detonate at a standoff distance which minimises the penetration of the molten jet into the body of the vehicle

Protection is not always guaranteed, 50 / 50 chance .
