I have been a silent reader on this thread for a while but I need an advice at the moment urgently.

I am 30yrs old with ND & HND in Petroleum Engineering Technology . However, in the final year of my HND program, I signed up for 1yr apprenticeship in Pipe and Argon Welding , and I have practiced this profession for 3yrs now.

I wish to pursue Canada PR, either by Study and EE.

I got a 2yrs Welding/Metal Fabrication Certificate course in College of North Atlantic, Canada. Spoke to my boss about it and he is willing to support with all necessary documents.

My plan is to apply for this Certificate course, although self sponsored, my uncle is willing to offer his SOA and necessary docs and stand as sponsor. my company is also will to issue documents such as : employment letter, reference letter, ID card pay slip, study leave approval letter etc. Since my aim is Welding career advancement.

For ties to Canada and home country; two of my cousins studied in Canada, both of whom are on PGWP. For home ties; my job, a plot of land, my wife, we also jointly have an incorporated restaurant business , my parents and siblings are in Nigeria

My Challenges:

1. chances of gettn a visa, Considering I already have HND in diff. field, then going for Trades/Vocational Cert. course.

2. Possibility of applyn for Open Work Permit/spousal sponsorship for my wife.

The Canadian Immigration law doesn't consider far distant relatives like (maternal uncle, aunts, cousins etc) as a close relation. The only set of individuals that are seen as close relatives are - Spouse, kids, parents and slightly siblings. Following this, the answer to that question should be NO, because uncle can never sponsor you to become a permanent resident of Canada in any of the Canadian's immigration programs.

I apply for a Canadian school for my undergraduate course (though I’ve first degree here in Nigeria, I didn’t bother to mention it). I was accepted and offered an admission but this issue now is how do I go about the sponsor aspect of it? I wanted to get a sponsor from a local government, with the local government statement of account and letter stating they want to sponsor me, I was asked to pay 300k for that. Even if I pay, Will this work ? Or is there other way I can get a sponsor? Please I really need y’all help on this thank you.

Hello Topstone,

Logically, your previous studies in Petro. Eng., your apprenticeship skills and prospect studies correlates. If you place a close observation, you would find out that Welding/Metal Fabrication is an aspect of Petro. Eng. To convince the VO, you can state that with your prospect course, you intend to consolidate your previous academic knowledge in on-field construction/wielding of crude pipelines and other drilling mechineries that enables crude drilling. Also, make reference to your work experience to buttress your academic study areas.

It will be best if you don't mention your two cousins. This might further weaken your ties to Nigeria. Its better to focus more on solidifying your ties to Nigeria, that's what actually counts.

In addressing your challenges, in addentum to the aforesaid, nobody can assure you of a certainty of an approval. However, if you're able to show proper correlation/advancement between your previous and prospect studies, you might stand a chance. Also, your spouse or child can be an accompany dependent as long as your SP is valid and this will enable her apply for an SOWP. The EE can also be a suitable route but you should act fast if considering it due to your age.

Regarding the Open work permit CA's long as you have a valid status in Canada you can always bring your wife( Study permit, work permit PR etc) you just need proof of relationship, living expenses sorted and your proof of residence-study/work.

As for your welding program, if you can proof that the program is going to be a reasonable expense then you're good to go. Also proof why you aren't doing it in Nigeria. Hence, it all falls on the logic of spending millions on a certificate that could otherwise be done in Nigeria.

I don't know how it works with VFS but from what a moniker stated that submitted recently, its best you book for an appointment. But if you are in Abuja, its normally a work in and submit situation. However, you can google VFS Lagos and get their website to book your appointment. Its a straight forward process on their website.

The passport should be a standard passport size, at least one is okay but go with two. Tell the photographer the purpose of it and they would take the perfect shot/size.
