Pele was better than Rivelino...Rivelino was better than Maradona...Maradona was better than Messi and Cristiano combined

This is for those who saw these people LIVE...

Generally players from 60s to 2000 are far better than the craps we have today,,,Argue with Alvaro Recouba.....

Bro, I want to believe you. I really do

However, I doubt many of us here were really mature then to watch them life and analyze. So, it'll be hard to take sides on the matter

Even I have to look for YouTube videos to compare game plays of classic greats to modern greats

I disagree.

This is the era of designated hatchet men and butchers. Who has one task to break the legs of the play maker or star player.

Messi and Ronaldo, Neymar would not have survived that era.

Tackling from behind and two footed scissors tackles were rife.

Garrincha, Maradona are not exactly hunks but they played in that era

So what makes you think Cristiano one of the strongest players to have played football won't survive that era?

No referee protection.

And all tackles that are outlawed now we're normal practice then. He would have been given permanent injury.

All these names I mentioned, I watched enough hours of them play. There is a reason we have videos tech naa. I had the privilege of studying and watching enough of most of the greats. Johan Cryuff and the Dutch team invented a turn and a football style in the 70s that is still being used today. So much for today being more complex.

Pele and the 1970 Brazil team played a brand of football still not seen by any side today. Not even Spain's side of 2008-2012 surpasses the Brazil 1970 side. That Brazil 1970 side went unbeaten from qualifiers till the WC finals and beat a super strong Italian team boasting the meanest defenders of that era. That era, the serie A was the league giving out the least number of goals statistically. The defences then were super mean and Pele played against them all with Santos and bested them times without number.

What about Germany in 1970 with the German Bomber, Gerd Muller? The Italian defence and mafian style overcame that legendary German attack to further show you how really good the Italians Brazil beat were.

Blueelf:

Nerdy, it's not a out name alone oo. Now I agree that those names were great I'm their own right but how was their play compared to the plays of modern day footballers?

It doesn't matter football is a short term career.

How many players were celebrated as the next best thing a few seasons later and its all forgotten.

There was a time when Jordan Ibe was contending with Raheem. Now he is not doing much at all.

Although I've known Josh from when he was at Man City he was about 14/15. He couldn't cut and went to the cold north of Sunderland. l didn't talk about him as a prospect then.

I queried his selection for the SE at that time as unjustified.

When he started killing it in league one ❓ Then everyone took notice. Including myself.

Nice argument. I see your point now. However, it remains difficult to convince modern day soccer fans about the greats of old because not everybody has the interest or patience to go watch and study their videos.

But again, were the Italians the only mean defence that the Pele-led Brazil faced in the WC? I'm asking because if so, then there is a hole on your argument. Some people here say that Pele hardly faced world class defenders in his time (save for the Italians you just mentioned)

Please note that I'm just trying to learn. I don't really have an informed opinion on the matter yet

They faced England in that same WC. England had Charlton, Geoff Hurst, Moore... Come on tell me that is not a crack squad. wink

They also faced South American rivals, Uruguay.

In that era, Pele repeatedly came up against the best defences in world football with his club Santos when he went on yearly global tours based on invitations to tournaments and top class friendlies against several of Europe's best sides from the La Liga, The English League (Pre-EPL era), the Serie A and then from Germany. The world wanted to see how Pele consistently fared against Europe's finest sides and Europe's meanest defences.. and guess what, Pele bested them all. He passed all tests in flying colors and proved his mettle as the best in the world.

These many games are part of the reason he could rack up so many goals statistically. He did it against Milan, Bayern, Benfica, Madrid, Etc...

Pele was playing when the world was learning the rudiments of football (akin to one eyed man in the land of the blind)

Modern football is much more complex and goals are much harder to score, for Messi and Cristiano to reign in such difficult circumstances and for such a long time makes them far better than Pele

One goal scored in modern football is equals to 3 goals scored in Pele's era
Are you sure? During Pele era no team ever won a world cup semifinal game by 7-1.

All this one you write na lie abeg. Very lame and untrue arguments built up overtime to discredit the Legend of Pele.

In Pele's era, you had greats like Eusebio, Bobby Charlton, Franz Beckanbeaur, Bobby Moore, Gordon Banks, Lev Yashin, Raymond Kopa (after whom the Kopa trophy for best U-21 talents is named), Gerd Muller, Garrincha, Rivelino, etc etc....

Football get men that time abeg. No dey talk wetin you no know.

Glad to see Lille pick up their first away win in Ligue 1 this season. But wait ooo... They had to wait to do it against one of Ligue 1's biggest sides.... Olympique Lyonnais. And also because they had Osimhen. Osimhen gives this Lille side wings. It is obvious they can function dangerously and have higher confidence and better threat with Osimhen in their lineup.

Good times. wink

Maja and Osimhen making my day. Good one lads.

Oga, messi and ronaldo will not survive in the pele era. Their careers would have ended prematurely due to rugby tackles that were allowed at that time. Football today offers more protection for players compared to then.
lot of protections. I was of the view that modern football was more difficult until someone brought these things to my notice. You want to compare the pitches. small bumps, modern footballers will be complaining. I once read that player began to get referees' protection due to injuries sustained from some kinda tackles... Messi and Ronaldo would be too unavailable due to injuries to gather these stats if it was that era.
