good morning house, glad to join this wonderful family.

I will be moving to Calgary with my family of 3 in February and i intend booking air bnb as i know no one in the city.

I am confused as to the options to select from and i need guidance, i hope to get a permanent address in the NE or NW ,this is because these two quadrant are cheaper and easier to settle in. I believe getting an air bnb close to these two quadrant would make it easier for me to get my own apartment. Also, i am considering a place that would make it easier for me to settle faster IE, close to a lot of places including downtown etc.

SW .i saw Condo 1bed room , top floor in SW area ,close to BMO,Ctrain fair price 2min walk to bus stop. few min to downtown 720cad. issue is it's not close to either NE or NW for me to have easy search for apartment.

NW. Then this basement beautiful ,2bed a min walk to bus stop in the NE around sandstone Dr. It has it's own mini smart burner to help with heating ,walking distance to liquor store etc .more expensive ta 815CAD ,though negotiating eith the host to reduce to about 700-750cad

NE . lastly, one in NE basement ,nice not too fancy but cheapest price @645cad ,2bed by Suite by SAIT & YYC Airport around renfrew. Bow River Pathway - 20 Minutes Walk
C- Train Station - 20 Minute Walk
Bus Stop - 1 Block....
Edmonton Trail - 15 Minute walk

please guys , help me rationally look into this and advice.

While you study to get certified as a Physiotherapist in Canada, its possible for you to initially train as a Physical therapy assistant or Recreational Assistant, and work with that certification for a while.

But if you are interested in Adult care you will need to get certified and licenced as an Health Care Aide (HCA).Your Location in Alberta will determine the best college you can consider for HCA, you may wish to check : Bow valley College and Red deer college.

Thank you so much. I did see the Bow Valley College while looking.

I'll research more on the RA and PTA. Thank you.

May I ask if you're a PT yourself?

I won't humor you further with any response after this; people take advantage of what the government offers because they pay taxes. Subsidizing child care is not a hand me down and won't it be foolish that subsidy exists and I do not take advantage of it, just because I want to prove that I can afford not to. You seem pretty predisposed to being a nuisance; if you cannot add value to a conversation, the thing to do would be to push your tongue down your throat when your brain starts to push you to talk nonsense.

I think you need to come down from your high old horse and humble yourself. Don't paint a different picture.

Subsidy and welfare programs exist for low income bracket individuals. It is mandatory to pay taxes regardless of your income status. Child welfare and day care subsidies are not for high middle class income earners or the super rich. Also, It's not about taking advantage of government welfare system, but your income bracket classification.

Like I said previously, if you can afford it you won't be thinking of welfare, subsidies or benefits. I understand on social media platforms, especially those utilized by Nigerians, everyone is rich. However, please note these programs are handouts and not programs people arrogantly take advantage of and loosely talk about in public spaces.

$645 for a 2bed basement? I guess Calgary/Alberta's economy is still taking a beating from the downturn. Before the oil wahala, renters will be begging landlords to accept $850 for a basement in some undesirable parts in the NE.

As per the bolded. Calgary is quite big/complex and it's not as easy as you make it sound. E.g Taracove in the NE will be farther to downtown or locations closer to malls and a lot of places than Westbrook in the SW. Same goes for a place like Forest Lawn in the SE vs maybe Sage Hill in the NW. In my opinion, just try to stay away from the fringes of the city if you desire to be closer to where all the malls and "other places'' are located.
You will understand when you land.

In addition, some areas are not cheap in NE. Same for NW.

In addition, I will encourage you to take PTA/OTA program which is more Rehab career path rather than taking HCA program which is more Nursing career path. PTA/OTA will give you a depth knowledge about Rehab in Canada and also help you to pass your College of physiotherapy board exams in future because as you are working, you will be developing your skills. PTA/OTA do the same thing as PT/OT except for assessment and few therapy treatments such as manual therapy etc. The job is guaranteed for PTA/OTA and HCA in all levels of care such as LTC, Acute and Community care. RTA is also good but you might not get the skills you needed for your transition into Physiotherapist in future because it is activities based career such as games and so on. Lastly, PTA/OTA program is two years Diploma program in most colleges in Canada while HCA is 6-8 months Certificates program and RTA can be either certificate program or diploma program. I don’t know all the colleges in your province Alberta because am in BC. But I know one college in BC that does all the 3 disciplines PTA/OTA/RTA in one 2 years Diploma program. There are many colleges across Canada that offering HCA program but few colleges offer PTA/OTA and RTA program in Canada. I hope I am able to give you more insight into Rehabilitation career in Canada. Sorry, I wish I have more info about Alberta but I don’t because am in BC. I wish you good luck in choosing your career in Canada. Best of luck.

It's funny but Christmas literally is my most favorite time of the year! I LOVE watching the snow fall, I love that it starts getting dark from 4pm, then the Christmas lights and decorations pop! I love playing my Christmas songs (so much the kid now runs under the table in protest when I start, lol). I have lots of Christmas activities lined up, including Naija 'kparakpor' this year (I'm not one to take pictures, but I'll try, lol). And the Naija parties, you don't even need to know who is throwing the party, just know the venue, lol.

Truthfully, Canadians can have really boring activities, but we are Nigerians, we bring our own fun smiley

einsteino:

This is where I'd join in deriding Canada or "badmouthing", hopefully I don't get caned for airing my honest views. I could share some awesome Christmas abi Winter pics but fact is that all the fun starts and ends at it looking picturesque. The experience is often lacklustre if not outrightly boring, it can easily leave a Nigerian complaining or just realising its empty lol. Winter and its snow might look pretty but trust me when I say the true beauty is the summer sun, lol there isnt any sane person who loves Canadian winter. Anyways, I digress.

Our christmas at best has the vibe of a workers day public holiday in Naija.... It is even worse for our bros who are muslims, their salah here can easily get them feeling homesick & dejected. In my opinion, Canadian christmas is awfully quiet. It's a caucus kinda thing, mostly happens indoors with your family and close friends only, unlike naija where you can be a stranger and still catch the festive feeling even weeks before. This could be a good or bad thing, depending on your kind of person, and your networks here.

Personally I miss the pomp and liveliness of not just naija's christmas but any celeberation in Naija and with it's people. But then again, Naija comes with the chaos that caused me to run away to Canada. Hence when we complain, its often with a tongue in cheek.

Christmas is more fun for those of us here with family I guess. It may be lonely for a lot of folks without spouses or kids.
When I was a student in Europe, I remember how tough and boring it was for other naija mates that do not have siblings or families in the country. They just drink beer and lots of it on Christmas day grin

I would have invited Einstein over if he wasn't 3 days drive away. cheesy

There are usually a few parties (house Christmas parties) or parapo Christmas parties(in sound proof venues) around this period, especially if one lives in a big city. But then again, not everyone fancies parapos either from church, tribe or general naija associations.

Thank you soo much. This is really insightful. I have noted these suggestions now and will do more research.

The RTA sounds more like what I've been doing recently here at our workplace. It's still a major interest of mine, but the first thing I guess is to have the PT license. So the PTA may be the way to go first. And to be honest, I really dread the PT exams. I dont know why. Maybe acknowledging it may help dispel it some.
May I PM you to discuss this further?

Hello dear, I'm quite interested in the HCA certification. But I'm looking at Norquest college because it's in Edmonton and that's my destination. Please what do you think? When can I start to apply as we're landing by month end.

Norquest is good Edmonton based prospective student, you can only start when you are already in Canada,so check their website to know the next admission period.

Have you joined any Whatsap group for Nigerians in Calgary? The one I belong to definitely have a party planned for this season. Send me a PM and I'll see if I can get the admins to add you to the group. But do that quickly if you're interested as vacant spaces fill up quite fast in the group. Cheers!

Thank you so much for your frankness. One must have a balanced expectation before making the sojourn into these lands. To me, the best survival jobs are those with late/night shifts, leaving the day free for you to attend to your job search/interviews. Taking too many excuses to be off work can get you fired.

The issue of 'Who know man' is real. That you are referred/recommended by someone can be the tipping point in deciding whether or not to employ. This can sometimes be understandable when you view the issue from the employer's lenses. For example, my employer will spend over $20,000 to train me over the next 3 months, yet they don't have a guarantee that I will be there by the end of this year. A recommendation from their reliable employee therefore helps them to form an opinion and make the hiring decision. However, that is not to say 'who know man' is the only way... afterall I wasn't recommended by anyone.

From the foregoing, abeg... make we dey help fellow Nigerians. If you work in a structured organization, help other Nigerians to get in (yes, they are qualified)... as other nationalities are helping themselves. While it's easy to help those we know, let's also remember to help those that are not so known. Put in a good word on their behalf, go out of your way to find opportunities for them.

If you have landed and are interested in the financial services industry, PM me.

Please could you share your email, I'm interested in the financial services industry
. Thank you
