our cucumber farm at 35 days,I cannot begin to imagine how we could have managed to irrigate this farm coupled with other things we are doing, drip irrigation is not only an effective way of irrigating it's also a life saver,if you water 5000 crops everyday for at least 3-4hrs standing in the sun,you will agree with me that it will take an iron will to achieve that.

okoroemeka,

This is a great job!

They are generally looking very healthy. The foliage spread is robust. That will help with good photosynthetic efficiency. Good job.

Are the flowering and pollination adequate, with respect to your previous experience?

Your timing (of the planting) is on point as well.

All the best.

Cheers!

the flowering and pollination is on point, the only problem we are having now is power, for some days now the utility guys has decided that we don't need light anymore and we have been running generators to pump water,it's funny seeing our leaders blowing hot on 7 point development agenda while power the one agenda that will make all possible is ignored, power or no power nothing will step between us and our reward this dry season.

Watermelon is money spinner because very few persons grow it coupled with the high market demand.

Very soon pepper will fall yakata as more people are growing and planning to grow it.

Try out watermelon.

I once sold a ball for 600 to retailers

Thank you bro. I'm a first timer. Which of the egg plant please and what variety of pepper.

What common challenges should I expect when trying out either of these plants?

don't let the name WATER melon deceive you, that crop does not tolerate water on the leafs or too much water on the stems make sure the irrigation will be the type that drops water on the stem and the watering will be consistent and regular or less you may end up with exploding melon balls, melon originated from the desert and arid climate to tolerate high temperatures.

Thank you. Please explain further as I'm a bit confused.

What's the best way to water it? On the ridges or spots (holes where they're planted)?.

I will be using hose (just like your nearby farmers) to water it.

Thanks a lot

if you cannot afford drip irrigation but has hose and and a water source, dig trenchs 1 meters apart, put manure inside the trench and plant the melon inside,if you want to water just place your hose on the top of the trench and water will flow down the trench watering the stems only,if you try to drag pipe on top of a melon farm and spray water on the whole leaves the type of immediate yellowing of leaves will yellow pass MTN office.

Thank you Nwanne Mmadu. I appreciate your guidelines.

The ending got me laughing and scared at the same time. Do you know why the plant is so delicate in cultivating?

melon don't like disturbance, unlike cucumbers that you can still weed the farm when the lateral branches are running and chock it this way and that way,if you try that on a melon farm it will not end well, plan and improve the trench system to suit your needs and, follow the natural incline of the land so that gravity will be pushing the water down every trench and you will be watering every 3 days

Watermelon isn't hard as we paint it to be. Get good cultivars like Kaolack or you can extract from fruit. Don't worry about extracting seed from watermelon fruit, it doesn't really make a difference from the treated. Note: I have grown watermelon for five years now.

As nwa afo ala, we have two seasons for watermelon, early in the year and late in the year, like from September. This is because watermelon does not like too much water. Just minimal. This prevents cracking, diseases and improves sugar content.

It's pretty easy. That thing is a money spinner.

Am searching for a big space in acres to grow this.
EVERYBODY must not grow pepper, cucumber and the likes. It rubishes farmers efforts and enriches retailers, as they will still sell at same price while u give your produce out at little or no profit.
Am always mindful of the market before growing anything. In fact, that's my number 1. I can't suffer in vain.
Relative scarcity makes a venture profitable. But when everybody does one thing, I fear ooo.

I grow cucumber but at a particular time. Grow it any how and buyers will play with your sweat. I once sold off a bag of cuke for 1500. In fact, I was even begging for them to buy because d thing plenty for market.
Back in 2015, I sold a bag for 6k during rainy season. But now... Why? Because everybody grows it.
When ever people invade a particular line of cash crop, I port to another.
Well, I know what works for me.

What you are saying is relative. Some markets have melon in abundance while scarce in cucumbers.
Farmers tend to grow what's in large demand. Pepper, tomato and the likes cannot be over saturated in most markets. Even if it plenty, it's only for a short time. You avoid harvest that period by planting at the right time.

That's same thing am saying, TIMING.
That same market abundant in watermelon will get to a period where reverse is the case.
Though, it's market dependent. That's why I put market first and not grow because other are doing so.

easier said than done, many seen and unseen unanticipated problems are standing between you and that smiling to the bank,if you do few crops in your backyard it will work, but try that on an acre in the deep bush and you will realize it's not easy smiling to the bank.

I'll start on a plot or half plot for now. Not in a hurry cos I don't want to end up getting my hands burnt.

I already planted cucumber on a separate land. Done it before but in a small scale. Hope it commands good price in the market during dry season? Sold at Coke Onitsha for 3500 per bag this past October.
