Let me start by appreciating friends and fellow Nairalanders for the support, encouragements and suggestions they have given to me hitherto. I so much appreciate you all.

Thank you and God bless. This is another hot story.

Enjoy ....

I soon left for my apartment to start preparing for work. As usual, I dressed nicely, this time in an ash color, well-patterned kaftan. The black shoes were designers own and they fitted perfectly.

With my nice perfume, I knew I smelt and looked good. I was soon driving to the office. My phone rang and it was Kike that was on the line. I always believed it was not good to answer calls while driving, but she was exceptional, so I answered the call.

“Hello, sweetheart,” she said.

“Hello, my darling,” I replied. “How was your night and how’s the boy?”

“The night was fine, and Steve is doing well.”

“Ah, glory be to God. Glad to hear your voice.”

“I’m glad too. I hope you’re not allowing any Abuja babe to distract your love for your wife.”

I grinned. “Oh, no, I won’t allow that to happen, my love.”

“Good. I love you.”

“I love you too, honey. Don’t harbor any fear because there’s no need for it.”

We exchanged more of those nice words about missing each other before she hanged up.
Phew! She didn’t want me to be swayed by an Abuja babe. How prophetic!

In the office, I concentrated on my work and forgot about Linda. I was so busy I was at work till five p.m. before closing for the day. I got home few minutes after six. I was changing from office wears to casuals when the bell sounded. Linda was at the door.

“Good evening, Linda,” I greeted her.

“Good evening. You came quite late today.”

She came inside and sat on a sofa.

“Yes, I really had a hectic time at work.”

“I can see that.” She smiled kindly at me. “You look stressed up.”

“Yes, but once I rest, I’ll be okay.”

She nodded. “I guess you’re right.”

I switched on the television and sat by her side.

“How was your work?” I asked her.

“Fine. All went well.”

“What can I offer you? Mention any drink and I would get it for you.”

She smiled. “Maybe later. For now, I don’t need anything.”

She put her head on my left shoulder while I wrapped my hand around her shoulder.

“Do you see me as a shameless woman?” she asked.

“Shameless? Why must I see you as shameless?”

“Well, it’s not a common thing for a young man to be sleeping with an older woman in this part of the world.”

I grinned. “Once the feeling of desire is mutual, there is nothing shameless about it.”

“Are you comfortable with it?”

I nodded. “Sure. If I’m not, I will not be holding you so intimately like this.”

“Thanks for your understanding.”

I sighed. “You’re welcome.”

Months later, Linda and I continued to have our secret affairs. Deep within me, I knew it wasn’t right. I knew it was better that I remained faithful to my dotting wife, Kike. But I continued to find Linda irresistible. She told me she loved me and would do anything for me. That was crazy, wasn’t it?

I found myself being yoked by passion once again. Lustfulness had put me in big trouble in the past, and I would never forget that. It had cost me a lot of things; things I would never forget.

With Linda, it was like the thorn in my flesh was back, and was there in full force. I honestly wished I had enough will to resist or overcome this very shortcoming of mine. My mind kept saying it was either I expunged the thorn, or it would choke me up and cause irreparable damage to my life or to my relationship with my darling wife.

For now, the grievous inadequacy remained and, sadly, I was stuck with it.

Maybe, I just had to go for ‘deliverance’ service to expunge the thorn. That was what Kike had suggested. On a second thought, I wondered if it was not just a matter of hype, saying that I was influenced by extraneous force.

If indeed I found it unsavory to continue with unfaithfulness, would it be such a difficult thing for me to resolve to stop it? With resolute decision, would it be too much for me to stop the act?

The fact was I indulged in it because I enjoyed the indulgence. Except something very morbid happened, I doubted if I could stop the act.

This Tuesday, I was in my office, compiling some media reports, when my door opened and the secretary entered.

“Well done, sir,” she greeted.

“Yes, thanks, Mrs. Momoh.”

She was holding the visitor’s form in her right hand. “This visitor wants to see you, sir,” she said.

It must be one of the press men, I thought as I got the form from her. I was surprised to see the name I saw on it.

“Miss Yetunde Osho?” I said nonplussed.

“Yes, sir.”

Was this the same Yetunde Osho I knew, or another one? My eyes went to the purpose of visit and could read the word, ‘official’ scrawled on it.

I sighed. “Okay, tell her to come in.”

Few seconds later, Yetunde was ushered into the office. The doubts I had if she was actually the one puffed into the air. I stood up.

“Well, see who I’ve got in my office. Yetunde, it’s such a long time.”

She smiled wanly. “How’re you?”

“I’m fine.” I extended my right hand for a hand shake. “Please sit down. It’s good to see you after a long while.”

She nodded and took the seat I offered her. Over a year ago, I had thought I would marry her under the ‘special arrangement’ made between our parents; but as people say, ‘man proposes, God disposes.’

Yetunde canceled the wedding plans after that ignominious episode in which she caught me ‘in the act’ with another lady. Well, the rest was now history.

“I’m delighted to welcome you to my office,” I said. “Something very important must have brought you here.”

She smiled again. “Well, you’re quite right. I’m here for a purpose.”

“Oh, before you go on,” I quickly said. “Let me offer you something. What can I offer you?”

“Oh, don’t worry about anything. I’m okay as I am for now.”

“Nothing?”

She shook her head. “Yes, nothing.”

I tried to smile and feel relaxed, but there was no doubt that I was a bit edgy.

“How’s your wife and the baby?” she asked.

I was not surprised she was a little bit up to date in my social life. “They’re fine.”

“You must be quite stubborn,” she put in. “I mean, for you to still go ahead and marry that lady.”

I sighed a bit. Thank God she no longer referred to my wife as “that house girl.”

“Love conquers all,” I philosophized.

She nodded as if she completely agreed with me. I waited patiently for her to dwell on why she had come to see me.

“My mind says I should see you,” she started.

I looked at her curiously. “Your mind? Hope there’s no problem.”

“No. it’s just something that has been on it for some time. Ever since that incident of miscarriage and our parting ways, I’ve been nursing a big grudge against you.

Even when I heard that you had married, I kept bearing the grudge. But now, I’ve decided that it is best I let go of the grudge. I’ve come to tell you that from now on, I bear no grudge again.”

I sighed and nodded. “Well, it’s good you came out very frankly. I appreciate that.

Thanks for having a place in your heart to forgive me. Yes, what I did was very bad and I’m sorry about it. I tried to reach you and to tender all the heart-felt apology I would have loved to offer, but found you inaccessible.

I can understand you were mightily angry with me. Anyway, thank God that now, you’ve decided to forgive. But don’t tell me you came all the way from Lagos to Abuja to say just that.”

She smiled. “I’m actually in Abuja for an interview in a federal agency. I’ve come for interview with Federal Civil Aviation Authority, to be precise.

So, I decided to use the opportunity to bare my mind to you.”

I nodded. Being a senator’s daughter, it was not totally unexpected that she would be fixed in a federal agency.

“So, how’s your wife and the baby?” she asked.

My boy, Steve was about two years old and Kike was an expectant mother again.

“They’re all fine. Thanks a lot.”

She stood up. “Well, so long, Henry. See you again.”

I stood up too. “It’s a pleasure having you around, Yetunde.”

I accompanied her to the reception before I returned to my office. I sat down and wondered on what she had said.

It was true that she had suddenly lost interest in me after she had suffered miscarriage as a result of the shock of discovering my misadventure. It was one unpleasant experience I would not like to remember. Her indignation had led to cancelling our planned wedding.

As I result, I had resulted to pitching my romantic tent with Kike, despite the avowed disapproval from my parents, especially my dad. All along, Yetunde had vowed she didn’t want to set her eyes on me again.

I hadn’t seen her since then. She had neither attended my wedding nor come to greet me when my wife gave birth to a new born baby. Even her senator father, the man that I worked for, didn’t mention her issue again after the initial expression of his disappointment with me.

Well, I had left all that behind to forge on with life.

Yetunde coming around to say that she had forgotten my misdeeds was a welcome development. It was good to let go of grievances.

I continued with my work and closed quite late. I didn’t get home until few minutes to seven o’clock. No sooner had I entered my flat when Linda knocked on my door.
“Hey, hello, Linda.”

“Hi.”

She came to give me a hug like someone who had been away for a long time. I reciprocated her gesture.

“There’s a bad news,” she said when the show of affection was over.

I instantly became very curious. “What bad news?”

She showed the paper she had been holding to my face. “Read this.”

I quickly went through the document. It was an official letter addressed to her. In it, it was stated clearly that she had been transferred from the Abuja office to Lafia in Nasarawa State. What was the bad news there? I sighed.

“Can you imagine?” she went on. “The transfer came just like that. To make matter worse, they gave me only a week to report at the new duty post.”

“Can you imagine?” she went on. “The transfer came just like that. To make matter worse, they gave me only a week to report at the new duty post.”

I grinned. There was not much to that, was there?

“I’m going to miss you,” she said almost sadly. “Honestly, I’m going to miss you.”
Now, I got it. I grinned. “Oh, I’m going to miss you too.”

Later in my bedroom, I thought about Linda going away. There was no doubt that I would miss her. Another part of my mind said her absence would be good for me.

Would that not provide an opportunity for me be a faithful husband to my darling Kike? Should that not be enough for me to expunge the thorn of lustfulness in my flesh?

The following Monday, Yetunde called my line again. “I’ve got the job,” she announced. “I’ve actually started it today.”
“Oh, congrats,” I said.
“Now, that means I’ll be living in Abuja too. Well, it’s not too bad to change location from Lagos, if you ask me.”

I had not given much thought to that. Surely, it meant she was now in the ‘neighborhood.’

“Yes, that is what it means. You’re now closer to daddy.”

“Yes. I’ll be missing Lagos, though.”

I smiled. “Hmn, somehow, we all miss Lagos.”

That weekend, Linda left for her new station. Before I left on Friday afternoon for Lagos by flight, she ensured that I gave her a good time. We promised to keep contacting each other on the telephone.

“I’ll surely be popping in to Abuja once in a while,” she said.

I nodded. “For sure, we’ll still be contacting each other.”

By seven in the evening, I was in Lagos. I took an uber cab to my residence at Lawanson. I was surprised Kike had not come home. She worked as a teacher in a private school and I expected her to be home with the baby by now. I gave her a call.

“Hello, honey. You’re not yet home?”

“Sorry,” she said. “We had a meeting after closing in the school, but we’re through. I’ll soon be at home.”

“Okay. How’s my boy? How’s Steve?” There was no way I would call without asking after my boy.

“Oh, he’s fine. We’ll soon be home.”

“Alright, see you.”

I was with my family, as usual, for the weekend. On Monday, I took an early morning flight back to Abuja and resumed duty at the national assembly complex in earnest. There was no definite closing time: sometimes, we could close by four, but sometimes, we worked as late as six p.m.

Today, I decided to call it a day about five p.m. I was putting my laptop in its bag when a call came through. It was an unknown number and I wondered who it was.

“Hello, Henry.” It was a lady’s voice but I could not immediately pin-point who it was.

“Hello.”

“Are you still in the office?”

now, I knew that it belonged to Yetunde.
“Yes, hope no problem.”

“No. i’m on my way there. Wait for me.”

“Okay.”

now, what could Yetunde be up to? Why would she ask me to wait for her, and what could be so important?
