Hi great people,

Please those in Ohio University or if you have idea about the school. Is TOEFL required for Nigerians?

My graduate coordinator wasn't sure and asked me to check the portal, but the information on their website is not clear.

If you know someone or have experience in this school, kindly assist

Send an e-mail to the Graduate School to confirm if TOEFL is required for Nigerians.

I would like to address this as i have been seeing this alot. I know it is not easy checking for dates and only seeing dates after your resumptions, i know it can be frustrating.

But what i want to say is chilllll grin grin grin, i know the resumption dates are getting closer and the interview dates are getting farther, but i would say on no account should you chose a day later than your resumption date at this point (i am saying at this point because i know some people would get extension letter and all that but that should be your very last resort, don't go with that option for now)

The embassy does this every admission period, there might not be date for a while but it will come to a time that they would open up dates and the fastest people would take it. The interview date might even be few days away.

So i would say, chilll, keep being alert, keep checking for the dates, don't chose a date after your resumption.

If it is for Ohio State University, you wouldn't need TOEFL. According to a friend of mine that just graduated from there, you simply can provide them a language of instruction document from your Nigerian school.
I wouldn't know about other schools in Ohio. Contact the graduate college or international office for more information.

For those who have done a WES or other evaluation, please what do you think a 3.62/5.0 GPA would turn out to be on a 4.0 grade system and what are the overall chances of securing an msc admission

Hello everyone,
I got an admission (fall 2020) Msc Agricultural and Environmental Systems at North Carolina A&T University with NO Funding.
I wrote mails to faculty and grad co-ord, and I got this reply from one of the faculty:

Hello Bleep,

First, congrats on your admission. If you are able to secure a visa, I can offer you a Teaching Assistantship in one of my classes. As a TA, you will be paid $8,000/semester but it will be contingent on you getting a visa. I hope this helps.

All the best!

Please, what should I do?

Congrats, this is great news. I think you should mail the Professor, thanking him for the offer and then mail the graduate school or the international students office or similar. Since it's fall 2020, I don't know if they would be issuing out your i-20 ASAP cuz fall 2020 stil far small.
You should inform them of the Professor's Assistantship offer and dey might ask you to request for a contract letter from the professor and submit to them so they can process your I-20 form reflecting the Assistant offer from the School.
All the best!!!

Hi,

I’ve also been accepted into NC State for Masters (Fall 2020) but no funding yet. How did you craft your email request to the professors? I have sent you a pm.

His i20 cannot show the offer because the professor made it clear that he won't offer him the assistantship until he gets his visa.

@ ridsan4real, fall 2020 is still far, thank the professor and keep in contact with him, however, apply to other schools too.

I just got an email that I have been shortlisted for a Skype admission interview. It is for a PhD program. Please I need advice from people that have had similar experiences. Thank you

Below is an old response to someone who was in a similar position in 2016......loved the response when i first read it and it applies to anyone with a Skype interview . Source: happy day. Also use the search button up and type skype phd or skype department then filter to travel section ... You will be able to learn a thing or two.

happyday

Congratulations! If anything, you can be sure that the department thinks you're good on paper. It's time to make them gauge how eligible you're for a PhD slot in their program. First, how did you get the interview invite? Was it through a normal application, or you knew someone (a grad student, post-doc or faculty) who helped you 'press' the right buttons? If it's the latter, you might contact them to give you a heads-up on what to expect.

Either way, you need not fret. Interviews like this is 2-way. They're trying to interview you, as much as you're trying to interview them!

Firstly, be prepared for the interview. If you don't have a 2-way headset (microphone and earpiece), get one. If your internet connection is not optimal, find a place where you can be connected for the period of the interview. Ensure your PC's battery is fine enough to last you throughout the interview, even if PHCN comes knocking.

Resist the temptation to dress in half. Dress as if you'll be attending an in-person interview. You might need to stand up, plus dressing full-length will give you confidence levels a huge boost. Minutes before the interview, test run the audio, video and internet connection. Test everything and make sure all is in order.

Then, you'll need to be ready. Find out about your interviewers. How many are they? It doesn't hurt to ask prior to the interview. Most likely, your future advisor will be leading the team. Check his research page and really dig into his research interests. You'll need to show some enthusiasm about his research objectives. Otherwise, he might think you won't make a great addition to his lab. Which might be okay than for you spending the next 5 years on something you absolutely have no interest in. If you're applying with a BSc, be prepared to discuss your final year project, and look for ways to link it up with the faculty's research work. Ultimately, your answers should reflect that you've taken time out to know what the Prof is working on, and how you see yourself being a great Plus One in his lab.

He would also like you to meet him. Pay attention. Don't get lost in the need to impress him/them. Tell him your doubts, be open and let him know you're looking forward to working with him, if truly he seems a cool person to work with. Prepare a few questions to ask, towards the end. It shows your level of initiative and motivation. Ask about the application process. If one document won't be coming through anytime soon, let him know. He might fight for you at the admissions committees. Again, if he thinks you're good enough. Which takes me to the last point.

Blow your trumpet. Don't be reserved or 'humble'. Glance through the documents you've submitted to them, and make sure you can defend them very well at the interview.

If all goes well, he might typical encourage you to apply. If you haven't done so already. I wish you the best.

He can print the mail but i don't think the VO are interested in what isn't guaranteed. He still has to show that he has all the deficits on his i20 in a bank statement though.

Someone might have a different view anyway

With January 20 resumption date, I hope interviewing on January 15 won't lead to a denial on arrival
