The OP's plan is to graduate with a degree in Psychology so that he/she can join the several millions of unemployed lazy youths and later join Yahoo Yahoo, but NO, the parents won't let the plans of the enemies to work.

Psychology is NONSENSE in Nigeria. In no distance time, that Course abi curse ni will be removed from the list of degree courses. It will just remain a General Study course.

Do Nursing and you will never regret it either you are in Nigeria, US, Europe, Asia or even in Oceania

Dear NL.
Recently, I was offered admission into a federal university to study psychology. I've always wanted to be a lecturer, so I opted for a course that wouldn't be much of a problem to me. My plan is to give in my best so as to come out excellent, go for my Masters abroad and venture into lecturing.

The problem here is: my parent doesn't buy the idea. They keep saying that landing a lecturing job is hard to come bye these days, that I might end up being disappointed. Moreover, a course such as psychology isn't one to expect any thing good from, especially here in Nigeria.

Now they are pleading I consider Nursing, according to them, I stand a higher chance of getting a job in a nursing profession to psychology. They are planning on sending me out of the country after the program. Should I just dash off my dream of becoming a lecturer to pursue nursing?

I love being around young people, and being in a university setting as a lecturer gives me that privilege to teach, mentor and guide them and at the same time work on my self. I think I'll find fulfilment as an academic. I'm confused, what would you advise me, if I were to be your brother?
Thanks
you can be a lecturer and a nurse I know people that's do both

There is NOTHING pedestrian about having a passion for young people and wanting to guide them, nothing!

The young people make the nation, dont you know that

If we had more people like him we wouldnt be in this mess we're facing right now.

Remember the purpose of his write up here. Convincing his parents to support his dreams! Definitely, it's not having passion for being around and teaching young people that I called pedestrian, surely not. If you're a parent, you'll surely want something more concrete than this as the reason for going into academics than nursing.

Hope I'm clear!

You can do both. Do a nursing program and specialize in an area of psychological care. You also still have teaching opportunities with that credential, as someone else mentioned. In fact, you'll be more marketable and have more opportunities to teach as someone with medical education compared to just another person with a psych degree. Studying psychology isn't bad, it's just that a lot of people in the west choose it (easy major), and that limits its value.

However, if you're willing to be a nurse, consider becoming a physician assistant. There's a fair amount of overlap, but PAs make more money. They also have a growing role as healthcare restructures internationally.

Please go for nursing... If you then travel out to America, then you have it jackpot. Registered Nurses are in high demand in the U.S. you can then go for your Masters in Nursing to specialise in a particular field. Then later a P.h.D in nursing... Nurse Anastestics are the highest earning Nurses in America. I know of a Nurse Anastetics that earns up to $190k a year in San Francisco, some earn more than that. Please go for nursing, good luck.

This is a typical African parents' way of seeing things. I had a prof who when she was a student took a break from medical school to do what is called an intercalated BSc degree year in Anatomy. She enjoyed Anatomy so much that she never returned to complete her MBBChir. She went on to do PhD in Anatomy and became a foremost anatomist in a major European country respected internationally. She edited the world's most famous anatomy textbook. The first and only woman to do so till now. She was head of anatomy in my university and a delight to med students.

In the name of pragmatism we often stifle the talents and dreams of our children. Fela Kuti, Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Adichie were asked by their families to study medicine. Achebe & Adichie actually started medical school. Would they have achieved as much as doctors? Probably not.

If you do Psychology, you can become a clinical psychologist after clinical training and passing the accreditation exam. Psychiatry is increasingly called Psychological Medicine to reduce the stigma. So there are opportunities in the right countries abroad.

If you are on the intellectual side than practical side, nursing may not be fun. You have to be dedicated, compassionate and caring. Not all nice people have these qualities to a high level. Remember how we all complain about wicked nurses and heartless doctors in 9ja. Many have no business in such caring professions BUT went in for better prospects or family pressure.

Healthcare is a calling. Something one should choose after looking at oneself in the mirror thoroughly. Not something to do out of pragmatism or under pressure.

As a nurse in the West, will you feel fulfilled dealing with a drunk guy in A&E at 3 am on Christmas morning? Finally getting him to sleep off his drunken state with saliva and other bodily fluids soiling his clothes? Or a homeless person brought in to A&E one cold winter night with a festering sore in his leg, and even with a face mask over your nose you still cannot breathe?

I for one liked those challenges and more. the opportunities to do much good are immense. But not everyone does. Some just couldn't wait to get out of the hospital to take even lesser paid jobs. After long years of education and training.

Have you considered radiography? It's less stress and if you pursue higher studies you might enjoy lecturing with it. Reason with your parents.

Las las if you must do nursing, do higher degrees too. But usually you will still have clinical commitments an honorary lecturer just like docs.

My dear if you’re really traveling abroad after the nursing degree (specifically USA because I don’t know about other countries)
Don’t let anyone play with your destiny. Just quietly go and study the nursing they are pleading with you to do.

You won’t get a job the moment you land in America. You will have to pass the nclex first. for some folks trained outside the USA, it takes a while for them to pass it but we Nigerians are hardworking and I’m sure you will make it. and then the job will be coming for you.

And the money is NICE. that’s all I can tell you.
Why don't you study nursing yourself

Sadly the economy won't let you choose passion over money.
Instead you have to bring your passion into what is already productive.

dear OP please and please go for what your heart desire to do,though your parent might have good reason and far foresight concerning yoir future career but trust me you might regret it later.

for example when I was looking for admission I have always wanted to study computer science and engineer simply because I love anything tech but because I am the only son of my parent who is a science student they push, fight that I should go and study medicine or nursing in school the course which I dont like at all but at the end due to my jamb result then I was giving anatomy and I continued with it they were happy that one of there son is in medical line at least. its was after graduation from uni I discovered or let me say they discovered that study anatomy in nigeria was a total waste of time and money couple with I grad with poor result, since grad from uni now I can't even land any reasonable job even ordinary teaching job coz the employer be like you cant even teach our level of biology cos majority of secondary school biology is about plants, I'm just stagnant now cos I don't even know what to do with my life now it was after grad I discovered that there re so many courses we study in Nigeria universities that have no prospect at all especially with first degree, what about people that have no capability to further there education after the first degree to masters and PhD?. so please dear OP think very wisely, you can show your parent this message maybe it 'll give them second thought to let you go for your dream course.

OP note: we have different destiny.
You can still do computing and tech stuffs. Register for certification programms d and learn free stuffs online

Yes, but with reference to your original comment, psychology is an academic pursuit that uses scientific methods while nursing is not a pure science but rather a vocational course that has a scientific basis.

If anything psychology should be "science" and nursing should be "act" and not the other way around.

You were speaking as if he was trying to choose between pure science and humanity which is not the case.

This is great

But I disagree with the bolded. Entering healthcare out of pragmatism doesn't automatically mean that the person will have a terrible time. They may come to enjoy it later on or at least just see it as a means to an end. It doesn't necessarily mean the person will start going psycho on their patients

Healthcare is a calling for some but a saving grace for others

Nope! Maybe the obsolete machines still in use in some parts of 9ja. You screen yourself properly from radiation. Radioactivity is measured in the areas around work to check for risk.

Depends on what you do, you might be mostly using ultra-sound machines even. Virtually no harm.
