SASSY AND SLAYING: DIARY OF A SINGLE NAIJA BABE

CHAPTER 41

Dear Diary,

1st September, 2017.

Hi... hi... I am happier these days because things are working together for my good. My work is good and my relationship with Kingsley is better.
I had a lot of shopping to do during the weekend, so I went to the market. Guess who I saw diary.
I saw Mr. Praise, my boss, pricing pepper and tomatoes. I was impressed because he was doing quite well negotiating with those mamas.
But when I noticed that those meat sellers were trying to cheat him, I interfered and they gave me looks that says 'What's your own?'

God punish them. Look at how they want to swindle my recently widowed boss. If I had not gotten involved, the poor man would have paid double the amount for the kilos of meat he wanted to purchase.

I had to collect my boss' shopping list and helped him to buy the rest of the things he needed. Mr. Praise was very happy. He told me that he was now living like a regular bachelor and he didn't like it.

He was doing his own shopping, cooking, laundry and cleaning again. And he wasn't finding it funny. He asked me to help him to get someone that can shop and cook, and another person that can clean his three bedroom bungalow and also do his laundry on a weekly basis.

I already had someone in mind. One of the cleaners at work told me that he needed a side job. I presumed that the guy would be willing to clean our boss' place and do his laundry too. I would later ask around for someone that can shop and cook for my boss on a weekly basis.

Out of pity, I told my boss that I would follow him home and cook a few things for him, pending when I get him a cook that can resume the next weekend.

Oh diary, you should have seen the look on Mr. Praise's face. He was surprised and happy. I can tell that, this man hasn't eaten a proper meal in a while. Even rich people do not like to eat out all the time. They also loved home cooked meals.
When we got to Mr. Praise's home in Ilupeju, the driver parked the car, while the security guard helped us to bring the loads of foodstuffs into the house.

I arranged everything in the freezer and cupboards and placed the rest in the store room. The driver had to help me when the security guard returned to his post.

I was shocked to see all my boss' pots empty! Na wa o! I started to cook almost immediately. I made six different kinds of soup, Melon, Ogbonna, Banga, Edikiankon, Oha, and Black soup. I also made yam porridge, beans, jollof rice, chicken stew, beef stew and fish stew.

I was happy when I was done because I knew that the man would have enough cooked food that would last him for two weeks max.

I served him and while I planned to leave, he told me not to look for a cook anymore. He said I fitted into the position. Right then and there, he gave me N15,000 cash.

He said he would pay me this amount every weekend to shop and cook for him. I accepted sharply. Me wey dey look for extra money before.
If I add this to my monthly salary, I will have about a hundred and ten thousand naira every month. God don't butter my bread o!

I didn't meet Kingsley when I got home in the evening. I tried calling him, bit he didn't pick my calls. He later sent a text message that he was at work. They had an emergency meeting.

I miss him already.

Got to go now diary. Someone is knocking at my door.

Maybe it is Kingsley. Maybe he is back from work.

Yippee!

SASSY AND SLAYING: DIARY OF A SINGLE NAIJA BABE
Episode 42

Dear diary,

23rd September, 2017.

I have good news diary. Ugo’s wife gave birth to a baby boy. Hope you remember who Ugo is? Ugo is my elder brother. I am so, so happy for him and his wife. My mum is the happiest woman on earth.

Kingsley and I attended the naming ceremony together. It felt really good to have someone at my side at a family occasion. I was like a peacock flaunting my colourful feathers.

Mumsie started with her wahala again o! She was harassing me. She asked why me and Kingsley are playing love instead of settling down. I laughed and told my mama to calm down. This woman sef.

Kingsley overheard her numerous questions and he promised her that he would bring his people sooner than she expected. Trust Mumsie. She was very happy and excited. Do you blame her? I guess she wants to see all her grand-children before she clocks seventy.

When Kingsley and I got home, he told me that we needed to talk. I was a bit scared because I knew it was because of what Mumsie said.

While we sat in my sitting room, Kingsley told me that he planned to take me out to a fancy restaurant and propose to me before the end of the month. But, he felt there was no need to wait any longer.

I was still trying to come to terms with what he was saying, when he suddenly went on one knee and brought out a ring from his pocket! I was paralyzed with the shock for the next few minutes. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Was this real? I kept asking myself. Was I dreaming? Was this really happening? I kinda pinched myself to ascertain that I wasn’t in some kind of daydream.

Kingsley Ike asked me to marry him and I said yes!

My dream has finally come true and I am so, so, so happy right now.

That evening, Kingsley got up and swept me in his arms and he kissed me till I was breathless!

We kissed and kissed and kissed and the next thing I knew, we were in my bedroom, still kissing, but stripping ourselves of every clothing!

Oh diary, the fire between us caught fire that evening.

Kingsley ate me up from my head to my honey pot and back to my lips.

Oh diary, I was literally set ablaze!

I didn’t try to stop him when he slid into my honey pot. He rode me till we couldn’t breathe! We came almost at the same time, screaming in ecstasy.

For the first time, he slept in my apartment. When I woke up at dawn, I found Kingsley staring at me. I was kinda shy… don’t ask me why.

He apologized for not controlling himself and he promised that he wouldn’t touch me again until our wedding night.

I agreed oh diary. What we did was wrong before God’s eyes. But man pikin no be firewood o. I won’t deny that I enjoyed every intimate moment we spent together. It was electrifying and mind blowing! I can’t wait for my wedding night to come oh diary.

Kingsley left my flat after we had breakfast together.

I am staring at my engagement ring right now as I write. It is indeed beautiful. And I can tell that it is very expensive. I know jewelry like my own skin.

Oh diary, my Prince Charming found me at last. Rejoice with me o!

Talk to you later.

Mwuah!

SASSY AND SLAYING: DIARY OF A SINGLE NAIJA BABE
Episode 43

Dear diary,

20th October, 2017.

Oh diary… I am not in a very good mood today. My heart is heavy and my brain is bursting with scary questions.

It’s being three weeks plus since Kingsley proposed. We wanted to set the introduction date ASAP, but a certain situation arose.

Let me explain. Kingsley took me to his parents’ place two weeks ago. They live in Lagos, but his siblings live in different parts of the country. I have spoken to all of them twice, I think.

On the day I met his parents, they were both very happy to see me and I felt truly welcomed. The visit went well until we were about to leave.

I overheard Kingsley talking to his parents in the balcony, while I was doing the dishes in the kitchen. They asked him how old I was and when he told them, they were not happy because I was three years younger than Kingsley.

See me see trouble diary! What's wrong with being three years younger?

Kingsley’s parent said they preferred a daughter in-law who was five years or more younger than their son!

Can you imagine diary? They want a girl in her mid or early twenties as a daughter-in-law. Is this not what put Oliver Twist in trouble in the first place?

His parents also asked what I did for a living and they were not happy with my job title.

Diary, do these people know how difficult it is to get a good white collar job in Lagos? As a receptionist, I am far, far better than most of my peers, who are still running around submitting their CVs and attending one interview or the other.

Kingsley’s parents said they preferred a girl with a better job title or a lady with her own flourishing business or preferably a girl from a wealthy family. This is Oliver Twisting things o!

Diary, I just weak.

Right then and there, Kingsley’s parent told him that they are not ready to follow him to meet my people. They said I was physically okay, but beauty was not everything!

Diary, I was disappointed at Kingsley’s parents’ excuses. They were not rich either, so why were they seeking for a rich in-law? Their son wasn’t a bank manager nor does he work in an oil company, yet they want a wife with a mouth-watering job title or her personal business.

Abeg, abeg, abeg. These people were asking for what they do not even have themselves. Why were they asking for the moon, when they cannot produce common chewing stick?

Abeg! I am hissing now. It is a very long hiss if you want to know.

That day, my weekend spoil. In fact, my weekend just scatter for ground like pieces from a broken glass.

Kingsley dropped me off at home and he promised to speak to his parents. He was confident that he could change their minds.

I changed into casual and went to my boss’s place. Remember I now cook for him every weekend and I also organize his shopping.

Mr. Praise noticed my gloomy mood that weekend. He asked me if I was okay. I told him that I was going through a storm in my relationship. The man advised me to put everything in prayer. He said God was able. I took my boss’ advice and I prayed.

Oh diary, I am still praying o. These days, Kingsley is rarely home. He is always out! I guess he is hurting as much as I am. I just hope that he will be able to talk to his parents.

But, I am scared. What if his parents are stubborn? What if he couldn't change their minds? Will our love withstand the storm that we face presently?

Kingsley and I haven’t really sat down to talk since that scatter, scatter weekend, but I am hoping for the best.

Pray for me diary.

SASSY AND SLAYING: DIARY OF A SINGLE NAIJA BABE
Episode 44

Dear diary,

15th November, 2017.

Oh diary… I am not happy at all, at all, at all. It seems like all my plans are shattering like a glass before my very eyes.

Kingsley told me some days ago that his parents want him to break up with me. They were not in support of our union at all, at all! Kingsley has promised to keep talking to them, but I am heart broken. Talk to them kwa? For how long fa?

My Christmas wedding might never happen. Oh diary... How I wish Kingsley and I could elope, get married and live happily ever after somewhere in the world. But, this is not a fairy tale. This is the real world. I am not Snow white and Kingsley ain’t Aladdin. He’s got no magical lamp and a Genie to grant him three wishes.

I am tired of praying o. Is Kingsley Ike really my husband? Is he the one I have been waiting for? Or should I move on and wait for my real Prince Charming to find me?

I have laid a dangerous prayer at God’s feet. I told God that if Kingsley isn’t the man I am supposed to spend the rest of my life with, he should end our relationship. I just tire...

I don’t want to miss it when it comes to marriage. A broken courtship is better than a broken marriage. I don't want to suffer at all. I have seen too many broken homes. I don't want my story to follow that pathway at all, at all.

Oh diary. I truly, sincerely and really love Kingsley. I am dying here. This crisis has made me to quarrel with my neighbours (the single ladies living opposite my flat), my colleagues at work (the cleaners and security guards) and Kingsley and I haven’t been on talking terms. He is rarely home these days and I am beginning to think that he is avoiding me. Is he? Really? Which kain wahala be this now?

I am so, so pissed right now.

The only thing that distracts me now is cooking and shopping for my boss. He pays me every weekend. I have been saving what I earn monthly from the bakery plus this side gig's cash, hoping to buy my wedding dress, jewellery and other things, but now… the money is just sleeping in my account. I am too weak and distraught to do anything.

Mr. Praise has never complained about my cooking and I am happy. On two occasions, he told me to resign and open a restaurant. For where? I don’t have that kind of money yet, biko.

These days, he kind of looks at me differently. He doesn’t frown at me at the office anymore, and at his place, he is much more cordial, but… yet, I think he created an invincible wall between us for only God knows why. Maybe he doesn’t like me.

What do I care? As long as he pays me for my extra work, I am game.

Thrice, I caught him staring at me as if he was seeing me for the first time. My boss is weird, walahi. I am not sure I can figure him out yet.

Enough about Mr. Praise.

Oh diary… what are we going to do? How do I convince Kingsley to elope with me? That seems to be the best option right now. It might sound Hollywood-like, but, this is my reality.

My mum has been asking how far and I have been stalling her. For how long? You know my mum. She will soon figure things out.

I am completely out of my wits end!

Oh diary…

SASSY AND SLAYING: DIARY OF A SINGLE NAIJA BABE
Episode 45

Dear diary,

21st December, 2017.

The Christmas season is here again, but I am not really in a festive mood. Another year draws near and I am scared because I will be clocking 30! I am not married yet and I have always dreamt of having all my kids before I celebrate my 35th birthday. Will my dreams ever come true? Or are my hopes dashed forever and ever? I will try not to be pessimistic. I am going to be optimistic henceforth. But, things are not working the way I planned it.

The bakery will be closing for the holidays on the 23rd, but the Bakers and the Sales Rep will still come to work. Half-day till the new week of the New Year. Mr. Praise has booked my cooking services for the Christmas day and New Year Day.

He said he would be having friends and family over. He promised to pay triple of our agreed payment and that’s extra cash for me.

This is the only good news I have. Everything else is bad news. For example, I came back from work yesterday and I met Kingsley seated outside his apartment with a young pretty fair lady. She is fairer than I am and I think she would be in her early twenties.

Who she be?

Kingsley introduced her to me as a childhood friend who left the country in her teens and was back for her youth service. He said the girl was 23! And she has got two masters!

Can you imagine? Me I don't even have one. Just my B.Sc and dass-all.

Kingsley joked that he could still remember how she played in their yard, running around in her underwear, now she was a fully grown woman, claiming right.

The girl laughed, but, I didn’t find the joke funny at all. I kept a straight face. Bells were ringing in my brain. The girl was the perfect candidate for the kind of daughter in-law Kingsley’s parents wanted. And I saw her as an immediate threat to my already drowning relationship with Kingsley.

Why did the girl have to come back to Naija now of all times? Why now when we were still trying to make Kingsley’s parents see reasons why I will make their son a good wife?

One look at this yellow chic and they would never give me a second chance! What kind of wahala was this now?

Kingsley was just running his mouth. He said he barely recognized her when she drove into our compound.

So, she even has a car? This is pure trouble!

If this girl was from a rich home, I need no soothsayer to tell me that she was my perfect replacement.

When I got tired of Kingsley’s stories, I asked him if he would come up later for dinner. But he declined. He said Nneoma has already cooked.

Nneoma? She cooked dinner! As in how now?

He explained that he was teasing her earlier, wondering if she would still be able to cook Nigerian meals and she surprised him by making melon soup.

Ah diary. I am so finished. Melon soup of all soups! That was Kingsley’s favourite!

I looked at the girl up and down and I was tempted to pluck her eyes out with my newly painted nails.

I excused myself, claiming that I was tired and that I needed a cold bath. I went up to apartment angry.

I am still angry, even till now. I have not seen Kingsley’s break light since yesterday. What’s wrong with my fiancé? Why was he allowing his family’s wishes to confuse him?

I thought he truly loves me. Abi love wasn’t enough? I am so, so afraid of what next right now.

Oh diary, I don’t want to lose Kingsley. But if he isn’t my own… I don’t even want to think in that light at all, all.

God help me o!
