It is a good debate. Ultimately a fullback that is sound in both directions is best, however teams that dominate possession usually don’t use or need defensive full backs, because 80% of the time you will face teams that sit back or outrightly park the bus.

An example is Zinchenko that Pep often uses at LB. He can’t survive in a small team that needs its fullbacks to be defenders first and foremost.

Same way it is with our dear AWB. If he does not improve his attack play will be redundant in a team like ours.

At the time Evra displaced Heinze at LB Heinze was still the better defender (so called primary duty), but Evra was so much better in attack.
SAF made that the the more attack minded fullback was better for the team.
