post=85374543:before the institutionalisation of the European Union, countries of Europe were poor, war battered nation's. Economic integration would surely lead to an improvement on our economic lives as West Africans. The only problem with this move by Ivory Coast is that West Africa caan not be an appendage to France. Ghana is truly a FOOLISH NATION! |

RisenPhoenix: "Many Africans cheered and applauded when Ivory Coast's President Alassane Ouattara announced on Saturday "that, in agreement with the other West African Economic and Monetary Union Heads of State, we have decided to reform the CFA franc with the following three major changes: First, the name change of the currency from the CFA franc to the Eco." His speech marked the official end of the French-backed currency CFA francs for the eight countries belonging to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo currently use the CFA franc which has been criticized by many as a French relic from colonial times. Further, France will stop holding "50 percent of the reserves in the French Treasury" and will withdraw "French governance" related to the currency. The Eco's value will be pegged to the euro, just like the CFA has been for more than two decades." It's like nobody here gets what the OP was about. The reply is short and concise which makes it okay, but the problem is how it was drafted. Even ignoring everything else, just the way both documents were signed shows the literacy level of the people who drafted it. The Ghanian letter ended with a signature and a short title while the Nigerian one was just..... 1 Like |

Nukilia: That was an entirely different kettle of fish. And it was right for the government to delay that as well. Nigeria is a huge economy with a large population. The experts here needed vastly more time to consider the impact on employment and local industry than a country like Benin or the Gambia for example. I am not privy to the exact sequence of that analysis, but I trust that it must have been concluded that no serious negative impact will result. The same conclusion must be exhaustively arrived at here before accepting this commom currency. Exercising caution does not necessarily have to end in rejection, but it should be ensured conclusively that rejection is not the better option. Let us exercise caution, not only for the sake of Nigeria, but for the sake of all the other Anglophone countries in West Africa that look up to Nigeria's economic direction. 6 Likes 1 Share |

EzeIgbo1:Nigerians are very funny sets of people. The Ghanian Cedis is one of the worthless currencies in West Africa. How Nigerians make it in other West African countries is the Nigerian government subsidy of virtually everything in Nigeria. Buy it, transport it to Ghana, Togo n the rest n make a ton of money. Also the American dollar is easily spent in almost all West African countries but Nigeria. As for Ghana Cedis,in 2007 it was 9000 Cedis to a dollar. In 2008, they rounded it up to 10000Cedis n made it 1Cedis to 1 dollar. This is 11 years later it's now 5.7 Cedis to 1 dollar. Now put back the 000. What is your answer? That's the true value of Ghana Cedis. 13 Likes 2 Shares |

Once you open any technical thread as this one , sift through the comments , the popular opinion is always the wrong one. Most commenters are knee-jerk commenters, they're mostly ignorant of the subject matter and aren't even ready to learn. |

If France wants to keep it's hegemony over French speaking African nations no wahala. Nigeria should treat the 36 states in Nigeria as individual countries. More State autonomy and rights and the states can grow their own economy, with the advantage of being able to trade amongst ourselves, I think even the GDP of the 3/4 of our states individually will be bigger than any of the french speaking countries. We should really start looking at our states as individual countries and start operating as such. It will grow the economy, bring governance closer to the people and reduce all these north, south, tribal and religious tensions in Nigeria. Just like the Indian & Chinese states or the Canadian Provinces. 5 Likes |
