I don't seem to understand what is happening with the Federal government as pe the payment of new minimum wage arrears to corps members. If you are one of those that have followed this up in the last 5 months, you will discover that it has been like a ball ⚽ juggling from either the ministry of youths sports and national development (MYSND) to the ministry of finance, or from the MYSND to the NYSC itself. You will recall that sometime in October, the honourable minister of the MYSND told the whole world (via his verified twitter account) that corps members will enjoy the new minimum wage, and that the DG of the NYSC will provide further details of payment as soon as he (the DG) gets full briefing from the honourable ministers of Finance and MYSND. Days latter, the DG said he was yet to get any directives from the Minister of finance on the implementation. But he was also quick to add that implementation will begin as soon as the FG begins to implement that of Federal civil servants. Sometime in December, the minister of MYSND told corps members in Lagos that corps members will only begin to receive the adjusted wage from next year (2020) because it was fully catered for in the 2020 budget. Take note that nobody has come out in details to state exactly how much corps members will receive and if they will be paid in arrears. The Federal Executive Council in one of its meetings in October had directed the minister of Finance to effect the payments of both the new minimum wage as well as arrears on or before December 31. Today is supposed to be deadline yet, nothing has been seen nor heard. But I have been very reliably informed that Federal civil servants received their adjusted minimum wage salaries for December, plus they have started receiving arrears since Monday. I don't seem to understand because the issue of the new minimum wage is something that has been on for well over a year now. Does that mean the FG has not been proactive to send a supplementary budget to the NASS, or are they trying to say that if Labour and Government had reached an agreement on the consequential adjustment since May, they would have waited till 2020 to start implementation, or are they also saying that corps members are less important, or they don't live in the same harsh economic realities every other person faces in Nigeria today?! Maybe they (corps members) dont go to the same markets, or perhaps they rent their own houses from the sky, or maybe the FG government pays the utility bills of corps members and provides free transportation from their homes to PPA's and from homes to CDS. I just don't seem to understand I swear, plus its very annoying. Please anyone with info on this issue could input. Thanks

*WILL FG PAY EX-CORPS MEMBERS MINIMUM WAGE ARREARS*

_Will FG pay ex-Corps members minimum wage arrears? Find answer below._

Following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) weekly meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation has been directed to pay consequential adjustments on the new minimum wage before *December 31st.*

Since then, Nyscinfo.com has been receiving series of questions as regard to this minimum wage arrears payment.
The most frequently asked question is "will Federal Government (FG) pay ex-Corps members minimum wage arrears".

Before I answer this question let's first understand the meaning of minimum wage.

*What is Minimum Wage?*
Minimum wage has been defined as the lowest salary that an employer is mandated by law to pay workers. This usually come, following negotiations between Labour Union and Federal government. Once the President sign minimum wage into law, employers who pay below the minimum wage can be sued to Court.

*_Will ex-Corps members minimum wage arrears?_*

Both ex-Corps members and serving Corps members will receive the new minimum wage arrears. However, those who will receive this arrears are those who were in service when minimum wage was signed into law.

That means minimum wage arrears will be paid to those who were in active service between *April* and *December, 2019.*

*_What date did Buhari sign N30,000 minimum wage bill into law?_*

The National Assembly passed the minimum wage bill on *March 19th 2019,* and it was transmitted to President Buhari on *April 2nd.*

On *Thursday, April 18th, 2019,* President Muhammadu Buhari signed the new minimum wage bill into law.

_*How can minimum wage arrears be determined?*_

The old minimum wage is *N18,000* and the new minimum wage is
*N30,000.*

Therefore, *N30,000 – N18,000 = N12,000.*

It has been 9 months since Buhari signed minimum wage into law. Therefore, the minimum wage arrears for those that have been employed since April to December is *N12,000 x 9 = N108,000.*

*Note:* The consequential adjustment arrears include those that their salaries were reviewed upward because of the new minimum wage.

I came across all these too. But truth is they are all speculations. Nothing here shows or answers the issue of payment of arrears to corps members. Untill the FG comes out with a definite statement, (which they are not), we are all but speculating.
