oluwadabira111: Consistent? I've worked harder on this book than I have on any other thing recently. I uploaded three very lengthy chapters (approximately 4300 words) in one month! If that's not consistency, I don't know what is. But to clear the air, next update will be on wednesday (8th). Updates will come once in two weeks. 22nd jan, 5th feb, 19th feb, 4th Mar and like that. If I have to update weekly the chapters will be short, and I personally don't like reading stories with short chapters, it kills the fun. Thank you for reading. |

IMPORTANT NOTICE Yay it's Wednesday! And Wednesdays are for Updates. I'll be dropping a lengthy chapter four in a bit. But first, I want to say a big thank you to the few people who have commented and even sent reviews through my PM. Thank you! And to my friends who shared the link of this story or had to create nairaland and wattpad profiles just to comment, I loooove you. Secondly, I reviewed my update schedule and realized that for a new story that's still building momentum, two weeks is such a long time for readers to wait. You guys may just abandon the story. Soooo *drum roll* Henceforth, I'll be updating every week on wednesdays by 7pm (you know soap opera style) But IF time permits or if you blow my mind with comments and reviews, I'll update more than once a week. Lastly, I've been thinking of uploading pictures of actors that are close/similar to the characters of this story. It would help some picture the characters better. But I'm also scared it'd ruin the image that others already have in their head. So please guys, kindly comment if you're for or against it. I'll just go ahead with it if you ghost on me. Thank you. 1 Like |

Don't fall in love. Fall off a bridge instead. It hurts less. - Unknown. Song - Dive - Ed Sheeran CHAPTER FOUR - Concertina wired ENITAN Hey.” Someone said in almost a whisper. The voice smooth and melodious, I couldn’t have mistaken that voice for anyone else. He came! My heart began to pace. I lifted my eyes to see him at the door. He looked breath-taking in the beige shirt that complimented his brown skin and displayed his biceps. He paired it with light blue jean pants that wrapped his long firm legs like a model. I loved him so much that just seeing him stand there made my world complete. I smiled, my heart leapt in my chest I feared it would burst. But my smile waned as I remembered the last time we met. "Hey." I replied. He walked up to me with elegant strides that radiated power. In few seconds he stood by my bed and gently produced a bouquet of white roses from behind, placing them on the bedside table. "How are you Eni?" He asked. "What do you care?" I said. I removed my hands as he placed his on mine. He cut me short. "I care." "What are you even doing here? Shouldn't you be attending to important people?" “You’re important to me Eni.” He said, crouching by the bed. I turned my face away. He was no longer mine. If I avoided his face, I wouldn't be tempted to want him in my life, losing him would hurt less then. My heart squeezed at the thought. "Hold my hands". His voice pleaded and his hands nudged my side. "What's the point? You're just going to let me go the next minute." "Here.” He raised his hand to meet mine. ”Hold me." I remained still. "Please." He said, in a calm voice that could make the queen of England swoon. I turned to look at him then lifted my hand from where it laid on my stomach and placed it in his hand. He squeezed it and carried it to cup his face, the stubble on his jaw now thicker than I remember. With my hand on his face and his hands firmly on my hand, he bent his head and placed it on my shoulders, my body became weak as jelly. He knew how to make me cave in. I bent my head sideways and laid it on his. "I got you." He said after a while we stayed like that. "No you don't." “I got you Babe.” Babe ? He had no right. Not after everything he put me through. He had convinced me to date him but ended up throwing our two-year old relationship like it meant trash. Tears welled up in my eyes. I needed to know more. Why he turned on me in such a short time. Why he abandoned me for three weeks only to show up now and call me Babe. So many questions ran through my head and he refused to open up. "I got you. I’ll fix this I promise." He kissed my eyes. But my eyes fluttered open to walls and a white ceiling. It was a dream. One of those dreams that haunted me since the accident. He didn’t come, he was never going to. My pathetic head needed to accept that and stop dreaming. If I had thought my heart was broken earlier, it was shattered now. I didn't want to live like this. Hoping and dreaming that he'd somehow care and walk through that door. My eyes still dizzy from the analgesic injections, I struggled to get used to the fluorescent light when cold hands touched my face. "Daddy?” "Yes princess, it's me." I took in my environment and noticed the silence. "What time is it?" "It's four a.m." "You spent the night here again? You didn’t have to." "So long as you're here, every morning when you wake up, my face will be the first you'll see." "Daddy!” The tears spilled. I was broken. The hopelessness of waiting for a man that no longer cared and the pain of being confined to a hospital bed for three weeks threw me into a depressive state. It mattered less that Tanya, my siblings and father spent their days in shifts at the hospital. I felt alone in my world. "I can't hold on anymore, this is too much for me." The pain in my chest swelled with every sob. "You can and you will princess." He held my hands and gave me a serious look. "You're the strongest of my children, you carried this family on your back after you graduated school, no normal twenty-one year old could’ve done that. But you did!" I sobbed uncontrollably. No words of encouragement could save my mind now. I knew what had to be done. "Look at me, look at me." He held my tear soaked face in his hands. "Who got us through when your mother left?" I sobbed shaking my head from side to side. "You." "No daddy. Please stop." "I won't. I will continue to remind you that you're a super woman, even if I have to write it on the walls. Now stop crying." He placed so much faith in me I felt bad about what I made up my mind to do. Would he ever forgive me, would he cope? "Yes sir." I sniffed and he wiped my face with his hands. I calmed down. He had enough worries and I didn't want to add to them. "You can't keep leaving every afternoon and coming back in the evening to sleep over. What’s going to happen to the restaurant? " His little restaurant was doing bad already, the few customers who patronized him out of respect now trooped to the new colourful modern one next door. "It’s not like there are even customers to attend to." "It doesn’t matter, you don’t have to abandon it for me." He argued no further and agreed to leave whenever Lisa came. He stayed by my side till seven a.m. when Lisa peeped into the room. Lisa was the young female paramedic who attended to me in the ambulance after the accident. She worked with St. Nicholas hospital where I was being treated and dropped by my room every day to take care of me and check on my progress. She became a dear friend ever since. "Good Morning Mr. Alaide." She waved at my Dad then turned to me. "And who's ready for their morning bath?" She smiled, with her sparkling thirty-two on full display. "I know it's a bit early today but I just switched to Morning duty and I have to beat time." "You know you don't have to keep doing this right?" I asked her. "Yes I don't. But I love to. Besides who else can handle your mood." She said winking. I felt guilty. Even though she only looked out for me, I gave her the cold shoulder sometimes. It was hard enough not being able to do the basic things for myself. "I'm sorry Lisa." “Nah. It’s fine." She said with a wave of hand. "I'll be back in ten minutes." Her petite frame disappeared behind the door. My father hugged me and made for the door the moment she came back into the room with a towel and bowl of water. She bade farewell to him, then walked up to me excited with a huge smile plastered on her face. She looked like a teenager who just received a car for their eighteenth birthday. "Guess what?" "I'm not up for this Lisa." I replied with a forlorn expression. "Give it a try Lazy." She dropped the things in her hands and placed her hands akimbo. "Ok it's about Dr Francesca?” My interest piqued. "The mean old lady developed a stroke and died?" I asked dead serious. She laughed and gave me a ‘you-are-unbelievable’ look. "Haha that's evil." She said, as she removed the sky blue cover sheets and prepped me for cleaning. "No she’s not dead. But she won't be attending to you anymore." "That's good news, I think. What happened to her?" "There were lots of complaints from patients about her. HR is looking into it but making her pause for a while." "Oh.” I felt sad about her suspension. She never bothered me with irrelevant doctor to patient conversations and I loved that. “I hope the new one doesn’t talk at all.” "He doesn’t. Arrogant prude!” She rolled her eyes. I said a silent ‘thank you God’. Arrogant people never bother anyone, just what I needed. “Who’s he? I like him already.” 4 Likes |

Chapter four Contd. “The gossip at the nurses' station is that, hottie, Dr Jameel will be handling all of Dr Franseca’s patients, including you! Ahn you’re so lucky." She said dreamingly as she placed both palms on her cheeks. I didn’t care about his looks, I just wanted my peace. She cleaned me up and fed me breakfast. My mood improved but my decision remained the same. I just needed time to hatch a good plan. She left for her shift at eight and I watched a boring show on TV. Few minutes later, I heard a short rap on the door and it opened to reveal a dark man of average height in white coat with a stethoscope around his neck. "Hello, I'm doctor-" He paused when his eyes met mine. "Enitan?" "Jameel Nenkat?" I asked in shock. I wondered if the drugs made me hallucinate. We had a crush on each other back in the university, but he thought I was too young so we remained good friends. When I clocked 19 we were already too engrossed in school work to have a romantic life, he with final year Medicine and I, with third year Electrical Engineering. He graduated just about the time we started to get close and we lost touch after that. That was five years ago but now he stood in front of me. "My God! Enitan Alaide. I saw the name on the file but passed it as a coincidence." "What are you doing here?" My question sounded stupid since his outfit screamed doctor. "You work here?" Stupid again. "Yes, I just resumed from my annual leave actually." He moved to the side of the bed and dropped his iPad on the bedside cabinet. He rubbed his palms against his lab coat and looked giddy. "Uhm wow. It's lovely to see you again after all these years.” He stuttered. “Albeit in the most unfortunate way.” He gestured to the bed. "Yeah. It’s nice to see you too Jameel." "Wow this is weird. With our history I don't know how to do this." He said, rubbing his palms against his coat again. "Do what?" I asked, tilting my head sideways. Do what. Really? What do doctors do if not deliver bad news then cut you up. Did it have to do with my legs? But the surgery went well and the team assured me of walking soon. "I have some news. I hope you take it well." He looked at the hands I placed on my legs and back to my face. My spirit left my body. That's it. It had to do with my legs. I'd be confined to a wheelchair for life. My eyes swelled with tears. "I think I can handle anything. Just tell me." "Ok. Dr Francesca would have told you before now, but with your blood pressure raised and health unstable, it was medically advisable not to deliver such sensitive information, especially when she didn't know how you'd react." My heart hammered in my chest. "Ok?" "Well Miss.. Enitan. Test results show you're pregnant." Clang! My head rang like a giant bell struck with a metal pole. I became nauseous. Being abandoned by the person I loved, and now pregnant for him. Was this God's punishment for giving my body to Nathan before marriage? If I lived, I’d be a single mom at just 24, how would I take care of a baby when I could barely take care of my family. I gained courage and asked him in a monotonous voice. "How long gone?" "Six weeks now." He said. He sat on the bed and continued. "It’s a miracle considering the accident." I stared into space and felt his hands hold mine. My eyes turned to meet his. "Breathe Enitan. A baby is good news. You just need to call the father and share the news." "Well the father won't be coming, ever." I fell apart and burst into tears. How did I get myself into this mess? "Hey don't cry." He hugged me. I held him tight and cried even more without a care in the world. I needed to release all the hurt that had built up inside. "We'll figure this out." He said, as he cupped my face in his palms. 5 Likes 1 Share |
