Even Kenya's National Youth Service (NYS) matches better than Nigerian army smiley No wonder they are so indiscipline and have no chance against boko haram - homegrown terror right in their country.

Kenyans are not anal about rice like west Africans.We produce about 200k metric tonnes and consume about 400k mt last I checked.We are water deficit country so don't expect us to produce a lot of rice.We import about 200-300k mt mostly from Pakistan.Our stable food is maize...and we have small deficit that we fill with low quality Uganda and sometimes TZ maize...and we have huge grain strategic reserves in huge silos.. possibly the only country in Africa with strategic grain reserve..so we never have food inflation of 15% like Nigeria or worse like Ghana.

Security is not useless.Having a discplined well trained force has made Kenya an oasis of peace in a region where all our neighbors have been at war bar the cowardly Tanzania.Our armed forces reputation for discpline has seen them sent as far as Eastern Europe for peace keeping mission...and we have never had a coup except one by junior airforce privates that last 2hrs in 82.

Kenya's Q3 exports down

NAIROBI, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's value of total exports dropped to 1.45 billion dollars in the third quarter of 2019 from 150.6 billion shillings (1.5 billion U.S. dollars) in the same of 2018, the national statistics bureau said on Tuesday.

Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) said in a statement that exports to Asia fell from 438 million dollars in the third quarter of 2018 to 380 million dollars in the same quarter of 2019.

"Notable declines in exports to Asia were recorded in the value of total exports to Pakistan (29.4 percent), Saudi Arabia (46.7 percent) and India (46.8 percent). The decrease in domestic exports of tea to Pakistan and re-exports of Kerosene type Jet fuel to Saudi Arabia were the main contributors for the overall decline in total exports to these destinations," KNBS said.

The bureau noted that similarly, a reduction in the export of dried leguminous vegetables to India resulted in a decrease in export revenues from this destination.

"On the contrary, there was an increase in total exports to Singapore, on account of domestic exports of crude petroleum during the quarter under review," it said.

KNBS added total exports to Africa were valued at 567 million dollars and accounted for 38.9 percent of the total exports to the rest of the world during the third quarter of 2019.

According to the government body, total exports to the East African Community bloc grew by 14.3 percent from 312 million dollars in the third quarter of 2018 to 356 million in the third quarter of 2019 largely on account of increased exports to Rwanda and Tanzania which rose by 56 percent and 17.3 percent, respectively.

The statistics agency noted that exports to South Africa, Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo jointly reduced from 97 million dollars in the third quarter of 2018 to 62 million dollars in the third quarter of 2019.

According to the government data, Uganda remained the major export destination in Africa accounting for 28.6 percent of the total exports to Africa between July and September of this year.

KNBS observed that total export earnings from the European Union stood at 299 million dollars and was 0.7 percent higher compared to the corresponding quarter of 2018.

The statistics agency revealed that total exports to Belgium and Britain increased by 49.9 percent and 1.4 percent, respectively.

"The rise was driven by an increase in exports of coffee to Belgium and cut flowers to Britain. On the contrary, total exports to Netherlands and France declined to 100 million dollars and 22 million dollars respectively," it said.

KNBS noted that total exports to the USA stood at 141 million in the third quarter of 2019, a 1.1 percent decline compared to the corresponding quarter of 2018.

The national bureau noted that Kenya's import expenditure in the third quarter of 2019 was 4.1 billion dollars from 4.3 billion dollars in the same quarter of 2018.

The government statistics agency added that Asia remained a major source of imports accounting for 62.6 percent of all imports, as the east African nation sourced goods worth 2.5 billion dollars between July and September 2019, which translated to an 11.1 percent drop compared to a similar period in 2018.

"The drop in imports from China (9.3 percent), India (18.7 percent), South Korea (39.7 percent), and Japan (15.4 percent), contributed largely to the decline in imports from this region in the third quarter of 2019," it said.

PMI: Nigeria’s manufacturing sector gains momentum in November

Nigeria’s manufacturing sector has continued to gain momentum as it rallied to build on the growth recorded in the third quarter of 2019. This was disclosed in the latest report released by the Central bank of Nigeria (CBN).

According to the CBN Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI) 2019, the Manufacturing PMI stood at 59.3 index points in November, up from 58.2 points index recorded in the previous month.

A composite PMI above 50 points indicates that the manufacturing/non-manufacturing economy is generally expanding; 50 points indicate that there is no change while a PMI below 50 points indicates that it is generally contracting.

Manufacturing PMI maintains growth

n November 2019, the five major components of manufacturing PMI grew at faster rates more than the previous month. The production level, new orders, supplier delivery time, employment level and raw material inventories all recorded growth.

The CBN report also disclosed that thirteen of the fourteen surveyed
subsectors reported growth in the month under review in the following order:

transportation equipment;
petroleum & coal products;
furniture & related products;
electrical equipment;
plastics & rubber products;
food, beverage & tobacco products;
non-metallic mineral products;
printing & related support activities;
cement; fabricated metal products;
primary metal;
chemical & pharmaceutical products; and
textile, apparel, leather & footwear.

Meanwhile, the paper products subsector recorded decline in the review period.

Non-manufacturing PMI grin grin

Just as the manufacturing sector PMI grew, the non-manufacturing PMI also indicated faster growth in November. The composite PMI for the non-manufacturing sector grew to 60.1 points as against 58.2 points recorded in the previous month. Meanwhile, fifteen of the seventeen surveyed subsectors recorded growth in the following order:

vehicles;
finance & insurance;
management of companies;
wholesale/retail trade;
real estate rental & leasing;
educational services;
health care & social assistance;
construction; transportation & warehousing;
accommodation & food services;
utilities; agriculture;
arts, entertainment & recreation;
water supply, sewage & waste management;
professional, scientific, & technical services;
information & communication; and
electricity, gas, steam & air conditioning supply.
