Niger Delta: Fg Spent $2bn On Arms – Atiku by smile4kenn(m): 9:29am On Jan 31, 2007 |
Abubakar made the allegation at the opening of his campaign headquarters in Abuja. He said that the weapons were bought to suppress the Niger Delta people instead of embarking on the development of the region. He said that Niger Delta was being degraded by oil exploitation and that the area deserved special attention. He added that if the $2bn had been used to develop the region, militants in the area would give up violence. He said, “Just a few weeks ago, this government approved over $2bn to buy weapons, not to develop the Niger Delta, but to suppress the people of the region. “If we channel this kind of amount into the development of the Niger Delta, nobody in the region will want to carry arms. “Our people are not asking for too much. All they ask for are universally recognised human rights, the right to life, the right to good education, the right to freedom of expression, the right to jobs, the right to decent living, especially those whose environment is being ravaged by the exploitation of natural resources such as those in the Niger Delta.” Abubakar, whose two-page address was spiced with extemporaneous remarks, also asked Nigerians not to vote for the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Umaru Yar‘Adua. He said that endorsement of Yar’Adua would amount to voting President Olusegun Obasanjo back to power. The VP added, “We must work hard to ensure that elections do take place as scheduled. Let us also work with our people to ensure that they cast their votes and ensure that their votes count. “We must stop in their tracks those who want to bring back the evil third term or life presidency through the back door. “They have amended their party‘s constitution so that the President will be the life leader of the party and the life leader of the government. So, if you vote the PDP again, you are voting Obasanjo. Don‘t vote for him, don‘t vote PDP. Nigeria belongs to all of us.” http://punchontheweb.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art200701312191654 |

This the same person that requested gun boats from China when America refused to provide the weapons unconditionally. Why is this guy so desperate to be president? http://search.ft.com/ftArticle?page=2&queryText=Atiku&y=8&aje=false&id=060228001088&x=11 "Atiku Abubakar, Nigeria's vice-president, told the Financial Times the US had been too slow to help protect the oil-rich Niger Delta from a growing insurgency. He said talks with the US over security plans for the region did not "appear to be moving as fast as the situation is unfolding" and Nigeria was instead sourcing military equipment elsewhere." https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-5553.32.html "Meanwhile, the Federal Government has turned to China for military hardware to protect oil facilities in the troubled Niger Delta. The recourse to China for arms, according to Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, follows the failure of the United States to help Nigeria in protecting the oil sector. Abubakar, in an interview with the Financial Times, published on Monday, said the US had been too slow in assisting in protecting the Niger Delta from the spate of attacks by militants." |

[sacarsm]No doubt, wanting to so desperately win the election due to held in about 3 months has nothing to do with it.[/sacarsm] It is not compulsory for him to be president of Nigeria. It is not his destiny. It is not his birth right. He can go to hell for all I care. |
Re: Niger Delta: Fg Spent $2bn On Arms – Atiku by 4Play(m): 1:35pm On Jan 31, 2007 |
Nigeria cannot solve the Niger-Delta problem militarily only.We need to adopt a concillatory approach to the issue instead of buying weapons and escalating the situation. The irony is that these weapons are paid for with Niger-Delta money The reluctance of the US to sell weapons to Nigeria and the eagerness of China to step into the vacumn illustrates a problem that China's rise brings.China not being a democracy does not give a damn about what Nigeria intends to do with weapons they sell to it U have a race to the bottom diplomacy from the likes of China.Like the days of Abacha when the West stopped military aid to Nigeria but China stepped into the mix,we are going to see more of these in the future |

It seems he will self destruct soon with is many unguarded and inciteful statements that could be easily translated to mean threat to national security and which will be enough reason to try him and jail him, I hope he has a good adviser somewhere. Interestingly, he is now working against the younger brother of his political god father, the same man that gave him the backbone PDM in the PDP. Interesting times lie ahead for Atiku. |

I've said it before. the only reason ATIKU is desperate now is because he knows after MAY 29th there is no more immunity and RIBADU will be looking for him. So he will try every thing possible to try and gain the public support. was ATIKU not part of the administration for the last 8 years? who is he fooling? why didn't he resign gracefully and exposed the presidency? |
Re: Niger Delta: Fg Spent $2bn On Arms – Atiku by mazaje(m): 2:44pm On Jan 31, 2007 |
If after may 29 only Atiku goes to prison without OBJ as his cell mate then i see no future in the war against corruption,Atiku deserves to be in prison so also is OBJ nothing more nothing less. |

Somewhere underneath the finess of managing democracy and transparency in the Judiciary and Legislature lies the very essence of protecting National intrest and stability at all cost. Over the years and over the world people have been eliminated in the interest of protecting a nations future. In our own history Abacha and Abiola were eliminated for this nation to move on, ugly as it may seem may be those acts were necessary for the nation to move on as it were then at a crossroad. The symbol of present day Nigeria's crossroad is no one than the person of Atiku Abubakar: As VP we have seen him go into hidding only for his posters to fill the streets of Abuja the next day reading "WANTED, Atiku wanted to take over Aso Rock". Fews days latter he comes out of hidding to declare to contest president on no platform. Where does he go from there? he then declares for AC while hoping to remain the VP in a PDP led government (an act which can only be equated to a mockery of the constitution for its loopholes and a direct attack on the immunity clause). he then goes abroad to drag the international community against a government he claims to be part of by leaking classified documents to the US. Comes back home employing the services o Niger-Delta militants as security aides (as reported by elendureports) and goes on to publicly attack the government's defence policy and alleges there is a plot to suppress Niger-delta militants. This group of boys have been Nigeria's greatest recent problem as they are outlaws and the Nations No.2 citizen is proud to identify with them. Mariory has earlier pointed out his role on lobbying China when the US did not seem to be acting fast in an arms deal aimed at tackling this same group, then the going was good for him. I am not also going to bore you with stories of this same Atiku sending his aides to devour a jounalist but has now turned a democrat. The ultimate point here is that there comes a time in a nations history where no matter our intrests and sentiments, we have to go out of our way for the sake of peace and stability of our nation no matter how unpopular our actions might seem. If there is anything like National Interest in the dictionary of our Judges they must declare Atiku's seat vacant so as to save this nations from degenarating into chaos. I rest my case till the Appeal and Supreme courts decide. |

I think Atiku is trying to de-stabilize the country by specifically saying the government are buying weapons to "suppress the Niger Delta people instead of embarking on the development of the region." this guy is doing everything he can to cause trouble |

Atiku why not resign for God sake and fight this battle if indeed you believe you have the strenght to do so. You can never fight a government of which you are part. I know you will never resign because of the immunity you enjoy so that EFCC, ICPC, and co will not have the legal right to arrest and probe you. Atiku,if you can't be a leader, why not be a follower abi na by force to rule Nigeria!! |

Atiku is fast becoming a clear and present danger to our nascent democracy. He is not getting his way, so he'd rather see Nigeria burn. Simple as that. He is a selfish , cunning , desperately greedy , characterless fraud! He certainly has no love for Nigeria. His only interest lies in the inner lining of his oversized pocket. What is wrong with a goverment procuring arms to protect it's vital national assets from criminal elements whilst negotiations continues? It's the duty of any responsible goverment anywhere to provide this protection. It is notworthy though, that criminal elements are cashing in on the Niger Delta debacle and Atiku by his comments, have shown he is no different from the bandits seizing hostages for ransom daily. Is he trying to win support from the Niger Delta militants? The national assembly owes the nation, as a duty, to call this baboon to order. What's at stake superceeds his personal over-ambition. He is probarbly trying to force the goverment into an over reaction to draw sympathy or overheat the polity. Either way, this desperately ambitious man does not bode well for our nation. |

He is not getting his way, so he'd rather see Nigeria burn. Simple as that. The comment above is quite similar to a saying in hausa which goes "A sa ni ko atashi" Which translated in broken means "If una no put me for the game I go scatter am". I believe Atiku is working on this principle and this is evident considering the manner in which he is prostituting himself to the world as a whistle blower. What kills me is that he does not understand that with what he is doing no one in government can trust him. He is definetely a security risk. I am tired of seeing the same names in the newspapar, we definetely need a change of government. All those old boys need to go cause they are playing outdated politics. |
Re: Niger Delta: Fg Spent $2bn On Arms – Atiku by azorjiu(m): 9:21am On Feb 03, 2007 |
Atiku's vaulting ambition will definitely ruin him. The declaration of Yar' Adua as the prince of cumberland is just too much for him to bear, but instead of allowing fate to crown him if it will, he has resorted to the Macbeth option- murder king Duncan at all cost. My advice to him is this; those who murder sleep will sleep no more! We don't need Sherlock Holmes on this forum to tell us that Atiku has become a security task to the nigerian government. Something ought to be done about him. Dress Atiku like mother Theresa, I still don't see him as the best option for asorock what with his recent utterances. |

Its a pity that the only person that does know ATIKU will not win any election is himself. He should leave we Niger Delta people out of his predicament. |

The man is trying to portray himself as a saint to gain political followership and to score cheap political points - Nigerians will remember he is part of the same government for more than 8 years - whatever failure this government has - he himself had been part and nothing will exonorate him - or is he saying he had been quiet for 8 years? If he had been quiet for 8 years, then he doesnt have the good of Nigerians at heart - let him just wise up. |
