$5 Billion Trapped Under Anambra Basin As Huge Gas Reserve Remains Stranded

At a time Nigeria is in dire need of all the foreign exchange it can get, $5 billion is trapped under the Anambra basin, an under-explored area with undeveloped proved gas deposits estimated to be over 10 Trillion cubic feet (Tcf).
The basin, reputed as next to Niger Delta in terms of hydrocarbon potentials, has a sedimentary thickness of 9km and covers about 3,000sqKm, with the eastern and western limits of the basin defined by Abakaliki and Ibadan.
“The 10Tcf quoted for Anambra basin is based on few wells drilled. The value could go higher with more gas exploration. The figure as quoted will be a big boost to Nigeria reserve base that has solely depended on Niger Delta basin as its main reserve base”, said an official at Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), government’s oil and gas regulatory agency.
“The discovered resources in the Anambra basin are in three categories; proved reserves, which perhaps are about 2Tcf, the remaining 8Tcf of the 10Tcf are probably unproved reserves and then the contingent resources. Thus, only about 2Tcf, which is proved is of any significant economic purposes as of now”, said Wumi Iledare, professor of energy economics at the Emerald Energy Institute, University of Port Harcourt.
“Assuming the price of gas remains $2.50 per Million cubic feet (Mcf), the revenue to be injected into the economy in aggregate from Anambra basin would be about $5 billion over the next ten years using. This would expand local economy in terms of output and employment and the multiplier effect in the community would be visible”, Iledare added.
Industry players expect government to also spur private investors into action in Anambra basin through policy support and incentives.
“There is a significant scope for development of a gas market for power and industrial consumption in Anambra basin. To achieve this, policy support and incentives are required to encourage the development of gas resources and associated infrastructure”, Jeff Corey, Chief Operating Officer, Seven Energy, told a delegation from Nigerian Gas Association recently. “Anambra basin will open a whole new area to have gas supply for power and industrial use”, Corey added.
The ultimate support the government can give, according to Dolapo Oni, Energy Research Analyst at Ecobank, is liberalizing the price for gas to enable a ‘willing buyer, willing seller’ arrangement. This will encourage investment in pipelines, gas processing facilities and gas production.
“The more important question is how we monetise these reserves, either through the power sector or LNG or even gas-to-Liquids plants. The key advantage is that with pockets of gas reserves across the country, we can distribute power generation around the country more and reduce dependence on the grid”, said Oni said.
Although conjectural, with right policy and incentives, experts say that within 18 months, two wells can be delivered within Anambra Basin dedicated to a combined cycle gas power plant.
“Approximately, 1Billion cubic feet (Bcf) per year can generate about 1,000MW of electricity at 75 percent output efficiency and minimal losses. Hence, 2Tcf proved reserves in Anambra basin can generate 2,000MW of electricity for approximately 10 years” Iledare said.
The Energy Research Analyst at Ecobank said there are significant investments in cottage industries in the south-eastern part of the country that could benefit immensely from small scale power projects that are distributed within the local distribution network.
Asked what the regulatory agency can do to help jump-start bringing the vast gas resources in Anambra basin to the value chain; “DPR as a regulator may not necessarily do anything because it is not an operator or investor in exploration and production like NNPC. However, if there is a regulatory bottleneck, DPR can come in and facilitate early production in the gas assets”, said the DPR official.
Within the Anambra basin, there are Ugwuoba and Igbariam gas fields; both contain some of the successfully explored gas wells in the basin. Some of the wells in the basin; Igbarim-1, Ajire-1, Akukwa-1 and Akukwa-2, were drilled by Shell-BP between 1938 and 1939 but were abandoned because at that time, the last thing they were looking for was gas.
There are also claims by the Anambra state government that two of the Oil Prospecting Licenses (OPLs 915 and 916) within the basin which belongs to the state government-owned Orient Petroleum has an estimated reserve of 193 million barrels of oil condensate and 30Tcf of gas.
Energy-starved Nigeria is a paradox of gas resource abundance. Its proven gas reserve is about 186Tcf, most of which come from associated gas, with prospects of the reserve base rising up to 600Tcf if deliberate efforts are made to explore for non-associated gas, yet 80 percent of its power plants which are gas-fired remain partially or perpetually offline as a result of non-availability of gas supplies.

Obiano that is not corrupt should have done better

Outside Kano city, were else has Ganduje touched in Kano with such aggression? Obiano has done and is doing his best to spread development evenly across the entire state not just in one city so don't expect Obiano to spend so much state resources on just one place.

you obviously haven't been to Kano.

Who told you it's only kano capital that is developed?

Kano is as big as(Anambra,Enugu,Imo and Abia)in terms of land mass.50% of Kano's land mass is well developed so don't even compare the two states or their governors.

Obiano is trying no doubt especially on Security and education but Ganduje is miles ahead of him in Infrastructural development (Quality Roads, world class bridges, industries,International markets etc)All his projects doesn't cost much compare to southern governors that will use to x4 of the money and still build substandard ones.

For instance,Awka bridges cost Anambra state government 7billion each to construct. In Kano a bridge of higher quality won't exceed 1.5billion.I understand it's because of the terrain though. But Northern governors especially gandollar is really trying infrastructure-wise same way obiano is doing marvellously well in Security,Education and Salary payment.

If u enter Kano now u go shock o

Here is my input on comparison between Kano state and Anambra state...I have been to Kano during my service year...the interesting thing about it is how they build good Roads... Anambra state is trying on road infrastructure but at same time is not good enough to be compared with Kano state, however this present administration in Anambra undoubtedly surpassed his predecessor in road construction but not Kano state.

Interestingly loudable features of Kano state roads is the very wide roads, bigger roundabouts, light poles and covered drains competitively this is the size and structure of Roads found in mega cities which we (Anambra)don't have or put in other way ANSG has not build such.

It is pertinent to reiterate again that this present administration of ANSG surpassed his predecessor in road construction that is poorly characterised with narrow and thin roads, open drains and no light poles and of course ugly and thin roundabouts, in relief I praise Obiano for the intervention on lightening up Roads, redesigning Roundabouts but still flaws in maintaining open drains or gutter in road construction.

While I have said these...I still understand that our soil factor problem which is an advantage North have over us in road construction making it more exorbitant for build better roads but nevertheless we are still lacking behind.

Although this problem will only result to fewer good roads but such big mega city road is absent still. Countlessly I have noted and bitterly complained the thin or narrow roads our Obiano is building with his innocent motive is to touch all segments of the state consequently substandard road litters all over the place indirectly following the old ugly pattern.

I have followed up the new roads being constructed by Obiano, for example the road where Ila Delta State and Anambra state share a common boundary..even when the both sides are not occupied the contractor is still following the Golgotha sequence with open drains, also the so called Air port road same sequence..that begs the question is this how we be like Seoul or Kigali. The knowledge of the latest features of a modern road should not be lacking in Anambra it is expected that ANSG should be endowed with it.

ANSG keep singing of residents blocking the drainage yet they are the ones you left it open after construction thereby till continuing the foot print of his predecessor.

In conclusion, in as much as this Present Administration is performing better than his predecessor but is has not built or set up a comparable Mega city road project like that of Kano state thank you.

Kano State has a GDP (PPP) of: $21 billion
Anambra State has a GDP (PPP) of: $22 billion

Kano States Population is: 16 million (Estimate)
Anambra States Population is: 8 million (Estimate)

Kano State Per Capita Income: $1,750
Anambra State Per Capita Income: $2,750

Note: Those statistics are for the year 2016.

In 2010:

Kano GDP (PPP): $12 billion
Anambra GDP (PPP): $6 billion

Kano State Population: 9.4 million
Anambra State Population: 4.1 million

Kano State Per Capita: $1,276
Anambra State Per Capita: $1,463

In the past 6 years, Anambra's wealth has doubled (98%), whereas Kano's has increased by 37%. So we can see that Anambra is developing much faster. At 3 times the rate.

Or Are you trying to say since we have higher GDP that Anambra is more developed than Kano?

Kano's population is also a fluke. When Kano and Jigawa which used to be one state and were less populous than Lagos, but today are way more populated than Lagos! Even with the massive immigration to Lagos from all parts of West Africa!

If Nigeria were USA, the official population would be about 500 million people because they will allocate 10 million as the population figure of every state in Mojave desert to match dense populated states in forested areas.

Well, we can go further and look at HDI, Anambra has a higher HDI, with a lower prevalence of poverty, lower mortality rate, higher literacy rate (for both men and women). The only thing Kano beats Anambra in, is the prevalence of AIDS.

All this gives them an advantage over Anambra, yet Anambra -with one hand tied behind its back- still beats them in all HDIs.

On bolded: you can bet your bottom dollar that now they've seen these 'unfavourable' economic indices is not helping in their dick measuring with Igbos, they will use their control of the centre to get it changed in their favour like they've done with the census!

Chike, stop misyarning here before I give a hot slap. Go and face your solar business because it is obvious you know nothing about development.

Anambra is by far ahead of kano in education, health, infrastructure, agriculture, roads, urban planning and development, housing, security, GDP, etc.

Chino i never Said Kano is more developed than Anambra,What i'm saying is that the quality of infrastructures especially on roads and bridges in Kano is superb because of their terrain and topography. For instance,if you spend 1billion to construct 100km of road in the North,in the south,it will cost you x4 of the money.

So you know say i dey do solar energy, inverter, signage, electronic displays(Both pics+videos) etc u no wan patronise your brother or even visit my office for Awka.cheesy

Season greetings.Wishing you and all Anambra-Nlers a pleasant new year ahead.

Oga i'm not talking about GDP,I'm talk about the tangibles,(Infrastructural development) on ground... With our higher GDP and lesser population and landmass, what have we achieved?

Or Are you trying to say since we have higher GDP that Anambra is more developed than Kano?

Mind you when it comes to Security,Education and prompt payment of salary i give it to anambra.

But if it's Roads,Bridges,City planning,Health, and Housing estates(govt owned) give it to Kano.

this is one of the most ignorant things I've ever read.
Do you think there's a connection between government needing to build more housing estates and Kano having the highest percentages of homelessness of any city on earth?
