Simply put sanctions is like telling your family members alongside your friends not to buy from and/or sell(any transaction) to mama nkechi or mama nkechi's shop. Anyone of your family members(friends) who does will lose the support they get from you.
This is the simplest way I can explain it. Now, why is it very effective? Because a huge percentage of the world are friends to the US and/or recieve massive support economically and militarily from the US.
