Appear In Court Or Risk Jail, Judge Tells PDP National Chairman, Others by nairavsdollars(f): 9:40am On Jan 13, 2020
Justice T.A.O Oyekan-Abdullahi of a Lagos High Court has ordered Prince Uche Secondus, national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to appear before him on February 10.

Failure to do so, the judge ordered that he may be sent to prison for contempt.

In the order obtained by Daily Independent on Sunday, aside Secondus, others who are also mandated to appear in court are Senator Ben Obi and Senator Biodun Olujimi.

It would be recalled that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP had disregarded a ruling by Justice T.A.O Oyekan-Abdullahi, which restricted it from conducting fresh elections of new members of the State Working Committee (SWC) in the Lagos State chapter of the party.

The order was sequel to a suit filed against the PDP, its national chairman, Senator Ben Obi and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Adegbola Dominic, who was the state chairman of the party before the election was conducted, had approached the court to stop the election.

However, despite ruling that the status quo be maintained, the PDP leadership ignored the ruling and conducted the election which produced Adedeji Doherty as chairman.

In the controversial election, Doherty polled 27 votes to beat his closest rival, Mrs. Omotanwa Kudirat with 21 votes.

The election, which was held to fill eight vacant positions, including party chairmen for Apapa and Badagry local government areas, was organised by a three-man electoral committee headed by Senator Ben Obi.

Other members of the electoral committee included Senator Biodun Olujimi and Muktar Ahmed as the secretary.

The other positions contested were vice chairman, state organising secretary, assistant organising secretary, legal adviser, assistant legal adviser, assistant secretary, assistant publicity secretary, and party chairmen for Apapa and Badagry local government areas.

According to the electoral committee chairman, Senator Obi, 68 delegates were expected to vote as approved by the PDP’s National Working Committee, but only 48 delegates voted.

Speaking with our correspondent, Dominic, who is the immediate past chairman of the party in the state said he will pursue the case to a logical conclusion.

He said the election and inauguration of Doherty was an exercise in futility as he remained the authentic state chairman of the party.

Speaking further, he said he secured a restraining order from the Lagos State High Court against the conduct of the exercise but the NWC, in flagrant disregard for court order, conducted the special congress which saw the emergence of Doherty as the new chairman of the party.

He said those supporting Doherty moved against him because of his loyalty and refusal to sideline the leader of the party in the state, Chief Olabode George, who had sacrificed a lot for the party in the state.

“I remain the state chairman of the party. If you go to INEC today, they will confirm to you that I am the recognised state chairman of the party.

“The election they conducted is invalid. The court has stopped the election, so anything they conducted is a nullity.

“Whatever they like they can say, but as far as the law is concerned, I remain the state chairman of the party in Lagos State.

“The status quo antebellum is the ruling of the court which they disregarded. When we get to the court, we will soon know who the state chairman of the party is,” he said.

When contacted, Kola Ologbondiyan, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, said he was not aware of any court ruling mandating the party leadership to appear in court.

“I am not aware of that. The PDP has not been served any notice”, he said.
