Culture is dynamic. The Oba could not see his hair apparent because of what transpired in the past, when a heir apparent attempted on the life of his father, the Oba. If such threat isn't envisaged, I wonder why that cultural aspect should continue. My opinion.
Picture below: The late Oba of Benin, Akenzua II with his wife and the then crown prince, Solomon Igbinoghodua Aiseokuoba Akenzua later ( Erediauwa II) in Cambridge in 1950. So it seemed the culture of heir apparent not seeing the Oba was discarded long ago before Oba Ewuare II came on the throne

Beggarly Obas of Nigeria BON, Oba's used to command respect, they invite governors for a talk when necessary
But since they started collecting Bribes, they pay visits to government house to collect Bribes that will keep their mouth mum even in the face of massive injustices against the people
Especially the Oba's in Yoruba land laughing and greening with the Oppressors who mocks them after giving them bribes

It is disgusting to hear of Obas visiting Governors, For what? looking for projects or bribes
They have lost the ancient honor of the throne

Oba used to lead his soldiers to war. Oba Ozolua spent almost 6 years with his royal court in Edo North. Though intermittently fending off Idah people in Edo North. Many people in Edo North still consider him their father.

Oba Akenzua as a crown prince was Secretary to his dad, Oba Eweka Il until he joined his ancestors in 1933 and Akenzua became Oba.

Akenzua even read the manuscript of Dr. J. U. Egharavba's A Short History of Benin to Oba Eweka II before its publication in 1933. How then did he read it to him without seeing him?

Oba Erediauwa visited all the 19 states of Nigeria up to SOKOTO in the early 1980s. On a thank you visit to the monarchs that graced his coronation back in 1979.
As a kid I saw him in our ancestral family home visiting the traditional ruler of the area on that visit.

Oba Akenzua like other major Western monarchs was a member of Western Region Parliament in Ibadan in late colonial times.

He even led Benin and Delta people to walk out of that parliament in protest to an offensive speech by Alake of Egba. Accelerating demand for creation of Mid West Region.

Oba of Benin is regularly invited to the first mosque in Benin. Though he doesn't attend most times by himself.

Commemorating when Oba of Benin gave land to build a mosque to Prince Kosoko of Lagos, son of Eleko Kosoko when he fled to Benin in 19th century. Eleko Kosoko was just deposed by the British in Lagos then. Eleko/Oba of Lagos being prince of Benin historically.

So where did you get all these fables from? shocked

In any case Ewuare I was the most important social, political, religious, societal and military reformer in Benin history. So expect Ewuare II to also make many reforms during his reign.

Economically Ogiso/Obagodo Obioye might just edge it narrowly. Obioye introduced use of money to end or drastically reduce trade by barter. Allowing goods and services to be assigned monetary value or worth.

In the olden days, Obas had no responsibilities and businesses. People do things around them then bring a portion of all their proceedings to him compulsory.
Now, it is different, they were business men and had responsibilities before they were called. Are they to abandon their businesses etc.
How can a law ask you to stop seeing a child you have been used to? Not easy!
Even it is also a general law in Benin that heirs must live with their parents till death, in this civilized world?
That's the excuse Lucky used to build a Government house inside his father 's compound. You can imagine citizens not having free access to the Government's house. You and I know how he ruled Edo from his father's compound.

sincerely you are misinterpreting the culture and tradition of Benin. I am a Bini boy from the great Benin kingdom. it was never stated that the Oba of Benin should neither leave his palace nor travel out of the kingdom, it was never said that he can not practice any other religion sorry from the Bini tradition as far as he is attending to every traditional rights he is supposed to fulfill as the Oba according to the Bini native law and custom, he never changed the tradition of the Oba not seeing the first son and heir apparent to the throne. Please as far as we are aware of, he has not desecrate the kingdom and he will never do so. please be careful about what you post online lest you send a wrong message. Thanks

Shuttle diplomacy from a seasoned diplomat. At Calabar, he requested the governor builds a memorial house in respect of Oba Ovboramwen who was exiled to Calabar. Also, at the PH airport yesterday, I wondered why the Nembe people had a delegation of over 150 persons waiting to welcome the Oba, it was then I realised that Oba Ovboramwen had a stop at Nembe when being exiled. Also, over 25 monarchs in Rivers State came to welcome the Oba because they have roots in Bini
