I've also added pictures from Lagos. The ceremony took place at the Remembrance Arcade at the Tafawa Balewa Square, where national Remembrance Day ceremonies were held in the 1970s and '80s.

Abuja

President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senator Yahaya Abdulahi (the Senate majority leader, representing the Senate president), Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, Justice Tanko Muhammad, the ministers of defence and the FCT, the service chiefs and the inspector general of police all laid wreaths at the Cenotaph in Abuja today to mark the 2020 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

President Buhari also released pigeons to symbolise peace and he also signed the register.

Here's a video of the ceremony

THE NIGERIA ARMY SHOULD RETURN NIGERIA TO THE REGIONAL STRUCTURE THAT THEY MET IT.

Nigeria should not be conducting this function until the injury they did to the Nigeria political structure is fixed.

This does not mean that we should not value or remember those who laid down their lives for Nigeria fighting Boko Haram and other wars in conflict zones.
I sympatise with family of late military personnel in Nigeria for the military service and sacrifice their son or daughter made for Nigeria and the world at large.

I am only talking in terms of the political damages the military inflicted on the political landscape of Nigeria.

Nigeria today is operating on unitary system courtesy of General Ironsi.

The Northern region refused to invest in Agriculture and they refuse to accept restructuring.

Now they are rejecting Operation Amotekun even before the regional security outfit for the south west start full operation.

The justice ministry under the federal government in Abuja is saying Operation Amotekun is illegal.

But the same northern people are closing their eyes to Hisbah and the wearing of Hajab by female in the Nysc when there is no constitutional approval for such.

Are we really celebrating the Armed forces remembrance day? Where we lose young soldiers almost on a daily basis and nobody talks about it. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen RIP for military contacts on my WhatsApp.

Organizing ceremonies for them will not give them any honor, what will give them honor is to take care of their families and those they left behind.

We Yorubas honor the great Benjamin Adekunle (aka the black scorpion) for his role in defending our homeland (SW) from invasion during the civil war.

Please federal and state governments take care of the families of all (both Nigerian and Biafran) our fallen heroes. There is no reason why any member of their families should be starving or suffering.

My favourite part of these ceremonies is seeing the chairman of the Nigerian Legion as he invites the reviewing officer (in this case Governor Sanwoolu) to review the legionnaires.

As I wrote on the other thread:

naptu2:

In the past month Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblems have been on sale across the country. Proceeds of the sale of the remembrance emblem go to the Nigerian Legion.

The Nigerian Legion is the Nigerian association of ex-servicemen, i.e. former members of the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force.

Officers and men of the armed forces are trained to fight and kill. When they retire, they discover that there are no jobs for them (some of them have been in the armed forces since they were teenagers and military work is all they know). Others were forced to retire from the armed forces due to injuries sustained in battle. The Legion helps them to integrate into society and take care of themselves.

By law the Legion is permitted to operate certain businesses in order to raise money for its members. Members of the legion also serve as security guards at government establishments (you often see them in their brown uniforms). The Legion also raises money through the sale of Armed Forces and Remembrance Day emblems.

In recent years (especially since the return to civilian rule) members of the Legion have gone through great hardship while trying to collect their pensions and gratuity. Sometimes their pensions are not paid for many months. At other times, legionnaires, who could be as old as 60, 70, or 80 years old are made to travel long distances and queue in the hot sun, all in the name of pension verification exercise. Many legionnaires have died during this process.

The veterans and widows and orphans of deceased soldiers usually get some benefits during this period.

For a long time (c1999-2009) veterans went through difficult times because the government wanted to verify them. Retired soldiers had to travel long distances and wait in line for a long time before they could get their benefits. Some died during the process. At that time it became almost normal for members of the Nigerian Legion to stage protests or complain to journalists on Remembrance Day. Things are a bit better now, but the special benefits that legionnaires and relatives of deceased soldiers get during this period are not from the Federal Government. They are usually from state governments.

Here are examples below (note that Governor Wike had already awarded scholarships to children of deceased soldiers last year)

1) Governor Wike donates N100million for the scholarship of Children of Fallen Heroes.

Remembrance Day: Kogi governor promises more support for family of fallen heroes

The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello has reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to continue to support the Armed forces, law enforcement agencies and the families of fallen heroes in the state.

The governor gave the assurance on Wednesday at the commemoration of the 2020 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration at the World War I and II Cenotaph, Lokoja.

The governor charged the living heroes to continue to defend the nation’s sovereignty, urging the citizens to support the government in catering for the well being of the loved ones left behind by the nation’s fallen heroes.

He similarly implored citizens to maintain law and order as security was a collaborative effort of different sectors of the society while urging the media to avoid disseminating falsehood.

The governor was joined by top service chiefs, representative of retired Service Men and the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, HRH Dr Ado Ibrahim CON, as they laid wreaths in honour and remembrance of the nation’s fallen heroes.

The governor had earlier inspected the Guard of Honour, signed the Hard Book, and released the white pigeons which symbolise existing national peace.
