Because there isn't any formal complain doesn't necessarily mean your comment didn't infringe on their freedom / right to freely express their thoughts. They created a thread because they've got the rights and freedom to do it. The same way you've got the right and freedom to comment on the thread. The story might be vague or fake, it doesn't matter as long as they're exercising their right. The aggrieved party can subsequently sue if it's libelous or slanderous in nature.
