THE KENYANS MAKING NOISE ABOUT ELECTRICITY

The inadequate supply of electricity for industrial and domestic needs is due to several challenges. These include the high cost of building new energy infrastructure as well as the inability to get electricity from the points of generation to rural areas which is where about 74% of Kenyans live.

next time i hear that Kenya has 70% electricity access, the way i will beat someone son.

75% of Kenyans live in rural communities and kenya does not have the money to extend the grid to those rural communities

Kenya will have universal access in the next 2 yrs if things go as planned (i.e at least 95 % access). The govt is now in the last phase of the last mile connectivity. The access rate is now above 75 %. The WB (your imf side kicks) put it at 75 % in 2017. There has been massive expansion since then.

Across the African continent, an estimated 600 million people, or 70% of the population, do not have access to electricity. Kenya would be among the first African countries to achieve universal access to electricity (after Algeria, Mauritius, and the Seychelles.)

If Kenya reaches universal access by 2020, it will have achieved in seven years a level of electrification that took the US a total of 33 years to reach, according to Todd Moss from the Center for Global Development. Electrification rates in Kenya are among the fastest in the region. It took Kenya about three years to get more than half of its population connected to the grid, a process that took the US eight years even at the height of its electrification campaign. (Granted, the US is about 16 times bigger than Kenya in terms of area.)

Kenya’s electrification campaign is notable in other ways. Much of Kenya’s energy comes from non-fossil fuel sources—more than 60% of installed capacity comes from hydro and geothermal power. Kenya opened the world’s largest geothermal plant last year at the Olkaria Geothermal field in southwestern Kenya where another plant is being built and expected to come online in two years. Kenya is also building Africa’s biggest wind energy farm to generate a fifth of its power.
https://qz.com/africa/882938/kenya-is-rolling-out-its-national-electricity-program-in-half-the-time-it-took-america/

Kenya has achieved substantial progress in economic, social, and human development over the past decade. Significant progress has also been made in the energy sector. For instance, Kenya has been taking advantage of its rich renewable resources and has emerged as one of the global leaders in the use of geothermal resources as a clean fuel for power generation.

Thanks to strong government leadership, as well as private sector investment and support from development partners, Kenya has also experienced an impressive expansion of access to electricity. Kenya now has the highest electricity access rate in East Africa: total access stands at 75% both from grid and off-grid solutions, according to the recent Multi-Tier Framework Energy Access Survey Report.

Kenya leads all its East African neighbours in deepening access to electricity by a wide margin according to a recent report by the World Bank.

The country was also listed among the top performers in expanding access to power in the period between 2010 and 2017 ranking together with bigger economies such as India.

At over 75 percent access currently (63.8 percent by 2017), the country’s rate was almost triple Uganda’s 22 percent and almost double Tanzania’s 32.8 percent and Rwanda’s 34.1 percent.

The report put those without access to electricity in Kenya at 18 million, again fewer that Uganda’s 33.4 million and Tanzania’s 38.5 million.

Kenya’s deficit is, however, set to narrow rapidly as the government plans to connect more than five million households under a Sh270 billion plan to achieve its universal access to electricity target in the next three years.

this sounds funny

53 million people that consume 1900MW
what a joke.

so one project hat extended your grid beyond 1000km

you've increased generation capacity to 2300mw but only have demand for 1900MW.
Because the grid has not been extended, 75% of Kenyans in rural areas still don't have electricity.

so you decided to do mini-grids
for rural communities but that became a white elephant with wasted monies.

Am sure you dont know we import electricity and also have diesel powered plants? We actually finished a grid line from the border with Ethiopia with the aim of tapping into their Grand Renaisance Dam power.

You laid a 330kva line to import power
but you guys did not break that 330kva line down to lay the grid that will feed your rural communities because you could not find the money to.

hence leaving 75% of your population without electricity.

Ethiopia: Kenya-Ethiopia Electricity Interconnection Reaches Testing Stage

The 500kV line has a capacity of carrying up to 2,000 megawatts and is 1,055Km long

Built by China Electric Power Equipment and Technology (CET), the project connects the Kenyan and Ethiopian power grids.

The Ethiopian part of the 1.26-billion-dollar Eastern Electricity Highway Project that connects Ethiopia with Kenya is set to be completed next month.

Built by China Electric Power Equipment and Technology (CET), the project connects the Kenyan and Ethiopian power grids.

The high voltage electric line, which is a result of the joint venture of the two countries, has a capacity of carrying up to 2,000 megawatts and covers 1,055Km, while 433Km of the total electric highway lies within Ethiopian borders.

The construction of the power transmission line has already been completed in August 2019, and the highway is only awaiting finalisation of the construction of a substation, according to Moges Mekonnen, communication director of Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP).

After the construction of the substation is completed, the testing will be implemented within five months, and the highway will be ready for power transmission by April 2020.

that is a high tension line for power export from Ethiopia

It does not connect homes grin grin

the purpose is to feed your existing grid.

Now you need to lay the 330kva distribution lines which will extend electricity access to the 75% of your population that live in rural areas

Obviously the point is to feed into the national grid. Whats strange about that? From the national grid its distributed to all parts esp the northern part. I just told you we are doing last mile connectivity ?! To the villages and rural areas. Much of that distribution infrastructure is already on the ground.

yeah but the national grid is only limited to the urban centres

so feeding the national grid without extending that national grid to reach rural communities by laying 330kv line, 220kv lines and 132kv lines, you have done nothing.
so even if you import power, all youve done is to create excess capacity.

Stop your gwongoro logic son. Study the maps below. The high power line I just talked of was done by Kenya's power generator KenGen. That was the end of their job. Before they even began constructing the line from Ethiopia, the entity responsible for distributing power known as Ketraco had already laid thousands of miles of consumer transmission lines across the country, together with REA (Rural Electrification Authority) who are solely responsible for rural area connections (this is what we call last mile connectivity).

Your thinking is that the last two Ketraco and REA were chilling waiting for KenGen and the line from Ethiopia to arrive. No! They have been doing their job on a phase by phase basis whether there is enough power in the grid or not. They just spread out the infrastructure because they have already been allocated the money.

the Last mile connectivity is only expected to connect 500,000 household which is 2milliom people.

which is not the entire unconnected 75% of kenya population who live in rural areas.
Rural electrification authority is only doing mini grid in areas that it can find a stream, which is abysmal.

As it stands the majority of the populace of Kenya remain unconnected and that is why Kenya is dark.

How would a professional muttonhead like you know the difference between people who live in rural areas and people who live in rural areas without access to electricity? 75 % is not the people without power, but people in rural areas, both with and without electricity access!!! Do you need a trumpet!? A good chunk of those in rural areas have access to electricity which is why Kenya's overall electricity access is +75 %! In some developed rural areas electricity access is above 80 %.
