Nigerian navy personnel shot in the air on Tuesday as they sought to clear a waterfront community of 10,000 people in the latest mass-eviction around economic hub Lagos.

Bulldozers rumbled into Tarkwa Bay, a semi-rural area on an island in the city of some 20 million, as part of an operation the military say is aimed officially at stopping the looting of nearby oil pipelines.

“Soldiers have been in and out since the morning, shooting, and telling us to pack, pack, pack. They gave us one hour,” mother-of-four Minda told AFP.

“Nobody to help us carry, no cars. I have nowhere else to go to.”

AFP correspondents heard gunfire during the operation.

Residents shouted that they were being “scattered” by the security forces as they loaded boats with household items, diesel generators and business wares before making the journey to other parts of the city.

Tarkwa Bay, which is accessible only by water, is one of the rare areas left largely undeveloped despite the breakneck pace of construction in one of Africa’s most populous cities.

Oil pipelines that supply Lagos run along beaches on the Atlantic coast in the area that are a popular escape for day-trippers from the city.

The Nigerian navy said the operation was aimed at protecting equipment belonging to the country’s national oil company from “vandals”.

“They build houses on pipelines and pump illegally,” Commander Thomas Otuji, a spokesman for the operation, told AFP.

“All the people in the community aren’t vandals but if you don’t report it, you are part of it.”

Tarkwa Bay is the 24th community in the area that has received eviction orders as part of the broader operation by the navy, activists from the Nigerian Slum/Informal Settlement Federation said.

Tens of thousands of people have left their homes in surrounding areas since December 21 and their residences have been demolished, the organisation said.

Lagos has in recent years seen repeated forcible evictions of poor communities living in prime locations, especially along the waterfront, as developers look to cash in by building high-end properties.

Says who? People have lived there for centuries without any problems I have been there with my guy many times. Issue is, who are these soldiers? Who sent them and where did they come from?

If it is to terrorize civilians you'll see the military and the police flexing muscle.

Boko Haram is there to flex muscle with, they refuse. Killer herdsmen nko, no way.

Shame of a nation.

That place should be an international tourist resort with standard hotels if well developed. That people have lived there for centuries is irrelevant. Did Vi, Ikoyi, ikeja GRA and Dangote Refinery site etc not have indigenes before? The proper thing to do is to compensate them or resettle them.

The recent clampdowns on dwellers around Lagos creeks, from Atlas cove, Ibeshe, Takwa Bay and other coastal areas is due to activities of pipeline vandals.

They should be compesated, my guess is that someone is about developing that place for a hotel or a residential mansion

Either way the dwellers should be compensated

With the manner in which they are being sent packing, they can't be compensated

To be sincere, that place is worth more than those dwellers.

I'm very sorry to say this. It might hurt, but that area is meant for something else.

That was where the Nigerian Army trained before the Mid-West Invasion in 1967.

In recent times it has served as the Army's tactical headquarters for Operation Crocodile Smile.

They have flexed and over flexed muscle against Boko Haram terrorists and defeated them technically since four years ago.

December 23, 2015
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said on Wednesday that the Nigerian military had met the December deadline to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists.

The minister said this during his maiden meeting with editorial heads of media houses in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Mohammadu Buhari had, upon assuming office, issued a December 31 deadline to the military to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists.

“Today, I can report that the war against Boko Haram is largely won.

“I can confidently say this because just recently, I led a group of 33 journalists from both the local and international media to the hot bed of the insurgency, that is, Maiduguri, Kondugua, Kaoure and Bama.

“Today, I can report to you that the entire 70 plus kilometres stretch from Maiduguri to Bama and all the way to Banki which leads to Cameroun and the Central African Republic are in the hands of our gallant troops.”

He said the military presence could be felt ”every few metres along the road; at a point along that road we were just a kilometre to Sambisa forest.

“They have so degraded the capacity of Boko Haram that the terrorists can no longer hold on to any territory just as they can no longer carry out any spectacular attack.”

Mohammed, however, said that though there were still cases of suicide bombings, it was pertinent to note that such was the nature if insurgency globally.

“Unlike a war between two armies, an insurgency never ends with arms victory

“Even in countries like Colombia where insurgency was supposed to have ended decades ago, attacks like this still happen.”

He said that the insurgents had adopted a new style of attacking soft targets like motor parks, schools, entertainment centres, religious centres, killing innocent people mostly women and children.

I don't understand
Just 1hr to leave the place without compensation
It would even take the boat more than one 1hr to leave the beach and return.

Just wait we would see whose handy work is this but me I'm suspecting tinubu that wants to use the place.
