ADVICE ON PLANTING AVOCADO SEEDLINGS.

Before you plan to plant avocado seedlings, there are things you need to know and keep in mind.

1) That avocado plants need deep loose soil.
2) That avocado seedlings can grow in the southern region of Nigeria excluding the coastal strip because of the saline nature of the soil.
3) We currently don't have up to 10 hectares of standards Hass Avocado farm in Nigeria not to talk of meeting the current demand for avocado fruits.
4) We have three main varieties of grafted avocado

i. Hass avocado
ii. Fuerte Avocado
iii. Pinkerton
However, there are over 50 varieties of Avocados and the value of the varieties fall in that order.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE PLANTING AVOCADOS
I want to categorically state that in planting avocados, the holes are the most important investment. I have said earlier that avocados need deep loose soil and if you don't provide such condition, be sure you are wasting yourself. Most people do make mistake of digging a very big hole, remove the soil and then plant the seedling down there, that one is VERY WRONG!!!!!!!!!

HERE ARE WHAT TO DO
~Do at least a 3ft by 3ft by 3ft hole
~Mix the top soil with manure (possible 1 wheelbarrow of manure)
~ Before you return the soil with manure, look for leaves, grass etc and place them at the bottom of the hole, then return the soil back to the hole until it's about to be filled them plant your seedling.
~ Ensure you don't cover the stem beyond where it reached in the bag/tube
~ Of importance to note is that avocados don't like water logging. Don't leave a hole that will retain stagnant water, this will lead to rotting of the plants.
-Space your plant at least 5-6 metres apart.

If you do the above, be assured that you will smile to bank after three years of planting.

Hass avocado farming is worth investment. It's less risky, very low cost input, low maintenance and ready available market worldwide. Hass avocados mature after 2 years and a single mature tree can produce more than 3000 (500kgs) fruits under good management practices. An Acre requires 160 trees at spacing of 6mx6m. The Avocado Society of Nigeria project intend to generate and distribute seedlings covering 3000 acres of women and youth led and managed smallholder farms across the southern region of Nigeria.

That is hass Avocado tree, start bearing fruits in 2 years but its advisable you prune the branches at that stage. The tree will still grow bigger than that.

HASS AVOCADO THE GREEN GOLD
Our economy will fare better when attention is drawn to national commercialisation of Hass avocado by Government and private bodies. As a nation we have all it takes to be the highest exporter in Africa by 2030.

100% of Hass avocado sold and consumed in Nigeria are imported from South Africa and Europe by the big supermarkets. That is why the avocado society of nigeria is encouraging famers at all levels and investors to look into this new green gold.
