Lastly, on Friday next week, we will be visiting Ganil. Ganil houses the largest Nuclear Research Reactor in France, it also has the biggest cyclotron. It will be our first industry visit and I will be taking alot of pictures (if we are allowed to shaaa).

I will be waiting for your comments (that is if people are still following this thread)

Let's get back in to the lab or school. This is why we are here isn't it? And I will be needing your inputs too.

Few years ago, Nigeria signed an agreement with Russia Atomic Energy (Rosatom) to build a NPP in Ituh LGA Akwa Ibom State. The agreement was that Rosatom will build manage and handover to Nigerians in 2035 or thereabout. The construction and installation of the reactor core will start next year (2021). The geological assessments etc has been done, approval has been given by presidency too, and there has been an ongoing sensitization (poorly done anyway) of stakeholders in the local government. Remember, Rosatom will build, manage, train (Nigerians) and handover in 2035. The cost of building this is $10b and will be financed by Rosatom. Nigeria will manage and ensure good environment.

Few days ago, the FG through El-Rufia after their executive meeting said the Federal Government has spent N1.3Trillion on electricity in the last three years. The truth is, while there is improvement, many are yet to experience this. I do not wish to forget also the amount spent thus far on electricity without any improvement.

Now does Nuclear Solve bulk of the problem? Yes. The major cause of the corruption in the power sector is the channel through which the money is spent. It is spent on an open ended project that can't be accounted for properly and that is why any auditing of the power sector won't work. In 2007, my company was the consultant for the NBET (Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading) Company. It is important to know that NBET is the sole buyer of all electricity generated in Nigeria. Currently, Nigeria operate a Single-Buyer model which works only for countries with small economy and populations. In this World Bank sponsored consultancy project, I was deeply involved and that is where I saw the weakness of our power sector, the death thereof too.

Nuclear PP is a focused niche. It has a set budget for each amount of electricity. It is an area where you can track progress and monitor generation because it is highly regulated. Activities of NPP is not only monitored by the host country but by the international community. Every country currently constructing a NPP is known, the stages are there and it is closely monitored. This makes it highly efficient in it's delivery and hard to steal fund. What about our current process? It is weak, open ended, no one is interested, there is no set budget for any amount of electricity, no one monitors them and that is the loop of events that we are in.

I hold the opinion that we will continue running around this loop and having little or nothing in power output if we don't consider a highly monitored source of electricity. Trust me, I have been to top of where these issues are discussed and I can tell you that even in the next 15 years, our case is not going to be different.

So what do you guys think? The classroom is open, no one is inside but you can contribute. I will like to hear your thoughts. Drop the comments and I will do well to respond. No one is right or wrong here anyway.

Welcome back sir.

I have just few questions.

1. how many NPP does a country like Nigeria needs (considering its huge population and its sprawling industries?

2.how much megawatts of electricity would be enough to meet Nigeria needs?

3.At the bolded, how do you think this issue could be solved?

Thank you.

I have just few questions.

1. how many NPP does a country like Nigeria needs (considering its huge population and its sprawling industries?

2.how much megawatts of electricity would be enough to meet our needs, considering the fact that we power generation is ridiculously below 7000 megawatt?

3.At the bolded, how do you think this issue could be solved?

Thank you.

1. France with about 60 million people have more than 50 Nuclear Power Plants. A country like Nigeria, I don't know how many we will need. However, all source of our electricity will should not come from one source. Also, we are spending a lot already for not having one. Having one would lead to a rise in research and quality of projects done in Nigeria not to mention the increase in expertise.

2. We need more than 90000 MWe, we should also consider increasing population

3. More foreign investors. When you get foreign companies to sponsor such projects, they will pay more attention and monitor the project. Once you leave it for Nigerians to manage, funds would be stolen. And the Federal government is already doing so. The Zungeru Power Plant is majorly sponsored by China, same with the contract signed with Rosatom.

Welcome back sir and it feels good to have you guys back.

@ the emboldened; lol. Money talks but money actually isn't all things. And in same part of the world too, individual money talks. The bulk of the people are struggling and those that have the money can't provide themselves with all they need because most of those stuffs should be done by government. Good road, electricity, water, housing, etc.

Update

On this thread and on one of the pages of this thread, someone mentioned something about a group/association called Friends of Nigeria (FON) here in France. Somehow somehow, grin I was added to the group and someone promised something tomorrow.

So tomorrow, Sunday 26th January, FC Nantes will host Bodeaux. The two teams has 3 super eagles players that will be playing tomorrow. Moses Simon of Nantes vs Samuel Kalu and Josh Maja of Bordeaux. Someone from FON, a sport journalist has offered us a ticket to the match and a time with the three super eagles players. So tomorrow by God's grace, we will be meeting with Moses Simon and Samuel Kalu. This will be my first time watching live match and perhaps the first time going out in a while.

So expect some pictures tomorrow guys.

Building Nuclear Plants wont solve the distribution issues, our main problem is transmitting and distributing the power we actually generate

Secondly considering many countries are doing away with their nuclear options for newer more efficient ones..why should be prioritize nuclear?
IMO it's in the interest of those countries with nuclear expertise to promote the nuclear option for Nigeria.

Instead of a Nuclear Plant...the mambilla project if it ever becomes a reality will be a massive plus

Nuclear PP is a focused niche. It has a set budget for each amount of electricity. It is an area where you can track progress and monitor generation because it is highly regulated. 1. How many do we generate that distribution is the problem? To me, distribution is a minor problem. The biggest problem of distribution is that all generated electricity is sent to a central collection point before being distributed back to different parts of the country (Except Abuja). Imagine transmitting all electricity to (forgotten the name of the city), before retransmitting back to other areas. This leads to grid collapse and loss of electricity. Also many countries even developed countries lose energy due to heat in transmission.
The major point is that we don't even generate enough. Imagine a country of 200m people using 4000MWe.

2. @emboldened, it's not many countries, just few if not one - Germany. However a lot of countries are building more, even Iran has one and still manage it. Turkey is building, South Africa (already overtaking us), China, etc.

however many we are generating if we add nuclear, will that get to everyone? I dont think so

Yes we are using 4000, which is not enough, but we can actually generate more than that, there's no point generating more if the system can only transmit about 7 and only about 4 is distributable - last I read about 10 idle generating plants in the country

The emboldened is a lie and I am sure you know that.

Secondly, we need something that is consistent in it's delivery. Once nuclear start operation, it can go 6 months without going off or being shot down. It does not depend on anything unlike our current source that depends on rainy season etc. Also, we need to reexamine how we distribute light. Once nuclear starts operation, it should be targeted to some areas say Lagos, Ph, Abuja where it can be paid for.

Why you guys are discussing about electricity production from NPP, I attended this technical program today.

Thanks to MrPhysics for reminding me about this program today by discussing about NPP.

The moment the speaker gave instances on how we adsorb radiation from common sources like Ray's from sunlight, smoking of cigarettes, eating of bananas, potatoes, etc my mind flashed back to you.

MrPhysics, I would love to ask, since we have natural background radiation in rocks, don't you think the radiation emanating from such rocks is harmful to workers on the rig?

Natural background radiation pose no risk to us because they are so low. Don't forget that we as humans are also radioactive. In fact we are told that the natural radiation in France is currently higher than some parts of Fukushima where the nuclear accident happened. Same part that the government is begging people to return and they are refusing, yet the radiation level here is higher.

It is about perception, it is about being bias, it is about the press too. You are radioactive, the next person with you is also radioactive, this level of activity is not dangerous to the health.

However, induced radioactivity from power plants, and oil drilling sites is harmful to the body.

You are more of an insider than I am, Are you saying 4000mw currently being distributed in the whole country is what we are generating? Or perharps, all our generating plants gets gas and are being put to use?

Nuclear is consistent quite all right but if it cant get to the end users, whats the main advantage over other? As a crude oil producing country we sure can meet and surpass our gas needs esp for power.

Perharps another thread, think people are more interested in living and studying in France

I am of the opinion that we can manage a nuclear power plant. It's an efficient source if energy and it's cheaper in the long run. I disagree about your view on Nigerians not appreciating risks. There are perhaps few people as conscious of risk as we are. Also the fact is, the nuclear power plant wont be managed by the average Nigerian, but rather by educated scholars like yourself; who are aware of the risk and will take the necessary precautions.

I also don't think the problem affecting oil vandalism will apply to nuclear power plant, as there's little of direct economic value to be gotten by raiding a nuclear plant.

I agree with you, we need nuclear power plant, it would provide us with a constant amount of electricity generation. Do you have an idea of the amount of power the nuclear plant in akwa ibom is expected to generate?

This is an interesting and educative thread sir. Well done.
