Ban On Keke, Okada: Lagos Government Promises Alternative by Blue3k(m): 5:04pm On Feb 03, 2020
The Lagos State Government has promised to provide alternative means of transportation for Lagosians in the wake of its ban on commercial motorcyclists and tricyclists in certain areas of the metropolis.

It also praised ‘keke’ and ‘okada’ riders for complying with their restriction from six LGAs, major highways and bridges.

The enforcement by the State Security Council began on Saturday.

The ban has been widely condemned by residents as the government made no alternative arrangements for commuters, leaving many trekking and struggling to find means of reaching their destinations.

The state said the ban, which is being enforced in 15 local government areas and local council development areas across the state, became necessary due to the casualty figures resulting from their operations.

In a statement released on the official Twitter page of Lagos State Government Sunday evening, the government said the level of compliance was over 90 per cent. “In fact, some of the ride hailing companies directed their riders to obey the directive. This is commendable,” it said.

According to the statement, “the high level of compliance has shown that Lagosians agree with the government on the need to stop the danger that commercial motorcycles and tricycles have become – a big threat to safety of lives and security of our people.

“The little discomfort experienced by commuters on some routes due to the absence of motorcycles and tricycles is noted. This will not last as alternatives are being rolled out.”

Alternative

It said a fleet of 65 buses will join the others on some major routes as from Monday February 3, 2020. “No less than 550 more buses are being expected. Besides, 14 ferries will be commissioned on Tuesday.”

It also said “this will further open up the waterways, reduce travel time on various routes and provide safe, dependable and comfortable alternatives for commuters.

“The government is not unaware that enforcing this directive may lead to some job losses. The Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, plans to announce some measures to tackle the likely effects of the order.

“Besides the programmes of various agencies, such as the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Office of Civic Engagement, Lagos State Parks and Gardens and others.”

Warning

The government warned those who are planning to unleash violence on the state because of the ongoing enforcement to have a change of heart.

“Lagosians are peace loving and law abiding people, who will not embrace any disruption of their legal activities by failed politicians hiding under the evil of unwholesome activism.

“The law enforcement agents have been directed to ensure that nobody takes the law into his hands. The government places a very high premium on law and order in the interest of all Lagosians.

“It will not fail to act when peace is threatened.”

One key difference between Nigerian leaders and their counterparts in developed countries showing up once again. The critical issue of planning.

Why banning Okada and Keke when there is no alternative means of transportation in place? Why the haste? Obviously, nobody sat down to analyze the SWOT analysis of the policy and developed vital implementation stages. It is like Sanwo-Olu and his team never knew that Lagosians use Okada and Keke daily to go about their businesses.

By the way, did Gov. Sanwo-Olu sound out the APC members at grassroots for feedback before this ban? I hope he analyzed the political implications come 2023 elections because Jagaban wouldn't blink before throwing him under the bus and nearer the tyres for maximum impact.

The black man's way....

Always swift to act, before thinking.

In a country where citizens are united and truly understand the strength in their unity, the Lagos as a state would have been shut down under protest.

No one is in support of the chaos called Keke or Okada, but they are filling a vacuum the government had deliberately created and thus become a necessary evil as the case may be.

The alternative should have arrived before the ban. Now they've just succeeded in rendering alot of people jobless and desperate.

Im interested to see what he has in store for them. He could hire some of them to drive buses. The others will just have to find new means of employment.

It's like this one doesn't think things through.doesnt sleep over things before making decisions.its either he makes decisions on impulse or he was drunk when making decisions

You don't provide jobs for people, the people decide to provide jobs for themselves and now you take away food from their mouths now complain of high level of insecurity

We know that okadas are a nuisance and have their excesses but you don't throw away the baby with the bathwater

The Lagos State Government has promised to provide alternative means of transportation for Lagosians in the wake of its ban on commercial motorcyclists and tricyclists in certain areas of the metropolis.
This is what we have been advocating for since the okada banned was implemented.
Alternative means is very important, both for the passengers and the riders,
With over 10 21 Million people in Lagos state.
not everyone can afford a car and definitely not everyone will own a car.

Slow and steady, we will get to how a sane society works.....slow and steady!

Good response by Lagos state government.
God bless Nigeria.

We all know there's a plan. They'll bring in more small buses to replace the Keke and Okada riders. Another way to get more money from lagosians.

65 buses for 18 million people whole the city of London has over 8000 buses going 600 routes for 8.7 million people ... Shouldn't he have launched these buses and ferries before enacting the ban which should have even been done in phases

Phase 1 : Normal Okada

Phase 2 : Keke Napep

Phase 3 : Bike hailing firms (Gokada, oride ,max)

Our leaders are not strategic in their thinking all they know how to do is knack smallies and buy the tokunboh and phone .

Nigerian politicians always placing the CART before the HORSE.
Why not put in place those social amenities, first before banning these poormen source of livelihood.
Governance is a social contract between the rulers & the led. That our government have been chancing us since the death of Sir A. Bello
& Co in 1966. They need to fulfill their social bargain before they tax us, but in Nigeria the opposite abound.

When Nigerians start killing their family, they will. Understand they are not God and can't rule. Over us. We are all humans for christ sake.

If it comes to. Killing these elites, trust me it will happen.

These people are playing with fire. How many Nigerians can the police overpower should the madness start now?
