MarianaTrench:That's correct. That's why European cars are often viewed as problematic lot. I watched a program where a,jaguar built in the 70s had more electronic gizmo than the average Toyotas of the 2000. I quite understand your point though 1 Like |

Well you will be forgiven in your sterotypical thought pattern since you have not bought a car or even used a Honda, brand. Honda goes head to head in competition with the toyotas in the US and Canada. Go and find out. They build great engines. The only thing to note is that Honda dont take abuse. Give it the right parts and fluid and you are good to go. Some of the models were recalled for particular factory errors. (Transmission).. The accord and civic of 2000 to 2003 models suffered transmission issues. Toyota also had several recalls, more than Honda sef. So dont base your opinion on hearsay. Do research and get hard facts and evidence. Uncle Tom has been rocking his baby boy since 2008 and it is still in pristine condition. The man is legendary for maintaining cars sha. The bull dog is also rugged. The op probably bought an abused one, a lemon or he was terrible at maintenance.[/quote] Well you just said my mind. Some people just blindly come out of their hiding and start saying what they don't know. I drove a 1997 honda civic as my first car for 6 years and then sold it in perfect condition and added money to buy a 2004 accord. For the six years it was fun with the ride and for goodness sake you cannot compare the comfort of a Honda car to it equivalent Toyota I.e rod vs big for nothing as they are called. Ignorance is a disease truly 3 Likes

Any car that cannot take abuse is not suitable for Nigerian roads and Nigerians because an average Nigerian has very poor maintenance culture! And we are proud of poor maintenance culture. Chai 1 Like |

BarrSly: The car is a good car. Only issue is its low clearance. Have to change from 15'' rim to 16" rim to raise it a bit. I have never experienced oil burn. I do frequent oil change max 3months. It's a good car. Enjoying the balance i feel on express compared to my former Camry drop light which is very light at high speed. |

nams77: And there was a reason for that. The jag was luxury. Meant for a select few. Probably only sold 5,000 pieces if it ever did get to such heady numbers. The Toyoda was for the masses who needed to get from point a to b without robbing the bank. It wasn't luxury and didn't need to have all the gizmo. It sold more than the jag. Now tell me which of the two companies are more profitable. The jag or the Toyoda? Let's not go this silly route on this thread. Just state your first car and move on. Mine bought was a Camry big for nothing. Bought Nigerian used. Whatever problems it had was caused by me as I fiddled with it a lot. Learnt a lot about cars through it. First car I drove was a beetle. Sweet little ride. Lost the brakes once on me but I survived. Car survived too. Guess the low bhp saved the day. Regular car driven in my teens was an Opel rekord. Nightmare of a car. Served it's purpose. If I was paying for the maintenance, I'd be in the village by now. |

9icetoo:I understand your point. Toyota brand is a simple car made for taking you to places without any frills. I believe they are even suited for nigerians ;Dwith our economy that is nose-diving on a daily. My point is still valid. Agreed that the jaguar is a luxury niche but what about the volvos, peogeot and volks that are perceived as problematic cars because of their complex electrical systems? Infact in some circle, Merc is seen as an over-engineered car. Personally i am beginng to take a liking for the Lexus brand and wont mind driving one in the future. Bottom line is that Toyota is reliable but bland and souless. But it gets the job done. BTW, my first cars was a Benz190. Rugged and resilient. Still missed that car. I feel bad that i sold . that moto suffer for my hand as it was my first car and i didn't know jack about cars |

nams77:The Avalon is a Toyota and not soulless. You get what you pay for. If you want luxury, get the Lexus. Even with all the gizmos added to the Toyota crown of the 70's and current Avalon's, they were still freaking reliable. Not all Volvo's had the unreliable tag. The 80's and 90's Volvo's were built like tanks. Hardly ever broke down. Had few in the family back then. Super reliable. Coincidentally, those European cars had efi engines when the average Nigerian mechanic only knew how to work on a carburetor. Add the fact that we were still using leaded fuel on these. I guess that's where some of the unreliable tag came from. The base Mercedes cars of then (e200, e230) were absolutely reliable. In fact so reliable they were around 30 years after they landed our shores. Some are still running presently. The few cars (European) who ingested our leaded fuel died off and by the time Nigeria embraced unleaded fuel, the problems went away. However, the damage to their reputation had already been done. Additionally, it was much more cheaper to buy smaller cars from America. This opened the opportunity for even average income and low income earners to buy and own cars. These low income earners of course opted for small Japanese cars. Most mechanics switched to them, learnt how to fix them, grew with them and mastered them. Europeans cars became fewer by the day. If you were a mechanic that specialised on European cars, no be person go tell you to port after hunger Don hammer you small. So the jap or Toyota crowd grew and it is what it is today. The European cars seem complex because fewer people want to invest the time required to study them and master them. The market is not there. Even the Nissan is having a similar despite being a Japanese car because there too few Nissan's around and no one wants to waste his time on unproductive ventures. If I open a mechanic workshop today, I trust that my first five customers will come in with a Honda or Toyota. Cool first car though. Liked the 190 when I was growing up but my dream car then was the Peugeot 505 turbo evolution. Damn! that car was pretty and fast. Will never forget the trips in that car. 2 Likes 1 Share |

9icetoo:I agree with you. Haven't really experienced the Avalon except from the few rides in a colleagues own. What struck me was how spacious it was. Frankly speaking, apart from the reasons you gave up there which are valid, what even inflames the Toyota followership is this word of mouth marketing by other users. I remembered when i mentioned Volvo to some colleagues, they all screamed as if i had just committed a sacrilege they all echoed it must be Toyota. It is this herd mentality that annoys me. Speaking of Nissan, whats your opinion on Nissan tiida/versa. Was doing research on it but i heard transmission and engine problems |
