“WHY ARE YOU LOOKING TO LEAVE YOUR CURRENT JOB?” How well you answer this question will likely either trigger or silence alarm bells in the mind of your interviewer, so it’s important you get it right. The key to answering this question well, is not to focus on what you dislike about your current role, but, instead, you must position your answer in a way that shifts the interviewer’s focus to the many other opportunities that you see in the position you’ve applied for. Ultimately, you want the interviewer to perceive you as a forward-thinking and proactive candidate who is looking to make a positive change in their career. For instance, you could begin your answer in the following way: “While I’ve learned a great deal in my current role, I believe it is now time to make a change, because…” From here, you have a platform to move your focus from the old to the new. “Whilst I have learnt a great deal in my current role, such as X and Y, I’m now looking for a new opportunity in which I’m able to expand on my skills, and build on my experiences, on a more consistent basis. I believe this opportunity may enable me to do that, as I’ve found from my research that your company has a commitment to lifelong learning for your staff.” https://twitter.com/hannytalker/status/1224245765213753345 1 Like |

Hansel @hannytalker You have been hearing of LinkedIn Optimisation but you are not clear as to what it is and how it enhances your job search. So, it all starts with your profile and ensuring that you put the best foot forward when it comes to your digital online brand. So, what I’m going to take you through are a few top tips to help you with your profile. Job title and headline: One of the first things that recruiters search for is your job title and headline. And this is where you can use lots of different words, so it brings you higher up in the search results and this is recognised as SEO which is search engine optimisation. Company: The second thing to look at is ensuring that you’re connected to the right company on social media platforms because this is a big searching tool for recruiters. Summary: You must have a well-written summary which is in the first person and really grabs people’s attention as it emphasises who you are and what you do. Contact details: The next one is your contact details. This gives you control of how recruiters can contact you and if you would like to be contacted as well. Industry: Another big thing to focus on is your skill set, your experience and the industry that you work in. For example, if you put the correct industry on your profile – I work for Sahara Group so my industry would be oil and Energy Skills: If you have your skill sets on your profile as well and you have at least five or more skills, you also come up higher in the search results on your LinkedIn profile and again, this is a big way that employers and recruiters search, when they’re searching on LinkedIn. Privacy settings: The next thing to look at is your privacy settings. Now you want to make sure that you’re putting your best foot forward when it comes to your online brand and that you’re not letting your network know every time you edit your photo or filter anything. Recommendations: Another element to look at is your client feedback. So, putting recommendations on your social media profile is a big way to build credibility and get potential employers and recruiters to get to know you before they even see you. Photo: With your photo, it’s important that you have a professional head and shoulders shot. Remember people buy from people. So, this enables people to get to know who you are and if you have a photo, you come up higher in search results The last thing, and not the least is to make sure you’ve got all your education and qualifications on your profile. If you have your education on your profile, you can get seventeen times more messages on LinkedIn and this is a big way that employers search for people through the schools and universities that they attended. So, all of this adds up to making sure that you have the correct online profile and that’s a big part of selling yourselves. |

@TamaraPosibi Hate to be the one to say it but many are hiding under the guise of schooling to avoid the real world. Acquiring so many certificates with no real-life experiences/application of what you're learning. Education is so important but it's better to use it to solve problems. writes professional and investor-ready business plans with financial projections. We receive excellent reviews from clients on our work. Please reach out to start this new month with a business plan to present to that investor. Please don't get me wrong. It is one thing to do all these for an academic goal e.g lecturing but do you have such plans in sight? Is this your end goal? Or are you avoiding the real world? |

Hanse @hannytalker · Once you’ve announced your intentions to leave your present employer your loyalty will always be in question. A thread on accepting a counteroffer after you have submitted your resignation letter. Should you stay or should you go? A counter-offer is an offer from your current employer to rival the one you have received from your future employer, to convince you to stay. Counter-offers can take many forms: a straight increase in salary, additional company benefits, a sought-after promotion or new job title, additional responsibility, a change in role, more involvement in projects that interest you – or any combination of these. From looking for a new challenge to career advancement, a desire to work with newer technology or within an organisation where they can contribute and feel valued, people change jobs for a range of reasons. Why then would a pay rise, new job title or additional benefits be anything other than a superficial tactic to convince you to stay? If you receive a counteroffer, it’s worth considering the reasons why you initially looked for a new role to begin with. They must have been serious and genuine since you not only looked for a new job but applied, were interviewed and accepted a position elsewhere. These are not the actions of someone satisfied in their current role. Having prepared yourself both mentally and logistically for a move for so long, a counter-offer can easily throw you off-balance and put your plans in disarray; they can be a real spanner in the works. The decision to leave your job is never one taken lightly, so when you’re presented with a counter-offer you should keep a clear head, take a step back and consider all your options. Here are some reasons why an employer might want you to stay: Finding a suitable replacement will be expensive. It will mess up their budget to re-recruit that time of year. They have not got time to re-recruit right now They want to have you cover while they hunt for your replacement. They want you to finish the project you are working on. They don’t have the time to train someone new at the moment.Losing staff might reflect badly on your employer The cold reality is that keeping you on because your skills are indispensable to the business is only one of many reasons employers issue counter-offers. You’ve made it clear that you don’t see your long-term career progressing within this organisation so you’ve got to think about whether this will affect your employer’s decision-making when considering future promotions. You’ve got to also consider the possibility that your boss will start planning for your replacement as soon as you accept the counteroffer. If they’ve got someone waiting in the wings for when you next decide to look elsewhere this |

Should my CV be more than two pages long? I heard my CV should not be more than a page. A thread on the length of your CV. First, understand that there is no one size doesn't fit all approach to this. However, the length of your CV will depend on your level of experience and the skills you have in your arsenal. If you're just leaving university or applying for your first job, it's likely that your CV will be one page in length or a maximum of two pages. if it's more it means there are things there that are artificially inflated or not relevant. If you have established yourself in your career, your CV can be two pages or 3 pages maximum. As an experienced professional you can communicate your value and experience without overwhelming someone who is already faced with the daunting task of sorting through many CVs. The 3 pages or more CV is used often by those who are at directorship-level and have a significant amount of achievements. It can also be used by freelancers and contractors who need the space to cover their range of projects and assignments. If you're a decade or two into your career and have written above a three-page CV filled with relevant information, chances are you could cut some of the details. Remember that prospective employers want to see the skills that you have obtained and developed most recently. Therefore, your current position of employment should contain the most detail as it's the height of your career so far. Jobs older than 10 years can be reduced to employment dates, your job title, and the company, or even removed completely as they're not as important at this time, even if they are relevant. Remember that your CV isn't a document of your entire career history. https://twitter.com/hannytalker/status/1227503755429478402 |
