Trouble dey sleep, inyanga go wake am.. You parked into a new house, and you were enjoying power without interruption, nobody sent you message, you went to make enquiries from your friend who told you the amount that the meter has accrued since erection. As if that was not enough, you took it step further to enquire from nepa themselves, now they have told you, and still went further to disconnect your light... I hope you have seen what you are looking for? In life, you see wetin you dey find.. I hope you are happy with your findings 2 Likes 1 Share |

I can relate to your present predicament. Since the landlord is not willing to cooperate with you on this, I will advise you go to their office and plead for them to set you up on a flexible payment plan say 20% debt and 80% units each time you recharge. That way you will be able to service the debt and still get units while you are staying in the apartment and then plan your exit when your rent expires. Meanwhile i will like to know which disco you are connected to. 2 Likes 1 Share |

You forgot that common truth doesn't used to survived in Nigeria.. Go back to that NEPA guy to help you out..the truth died when Lord Lugard and Floral decided to take Southern and Northern protectorate to their matrimonial room to witness their conjugal act. They couldn't tell the world ;the whole truth of what they saw.. Holiness belong to sane countries.. You are in insane country... |

The rule is that landlords bear the burden of any electricity debt on their property if they allow tenants to leave without settling their bills. It's the landlord's responsibility to ensure any tenant checking out did not tamper with meters, nor accrued any debt. Contact the DisCo and they'll tell you this much. 3 Likes |

puretayo: The sad thing about most of the comments here is that many of them were encouraging him to continue with the illegal connection. When I say that the main problem with power in Nigeria is that most Nigerians don't want to pay their light bills, and that even giving everyone a meter won't solve the problem because many Nigerians will bypass the meter and enjoy free light, people abuse me and call me names and say I am evil, or supporting Buhari (that I never voted for, not since 2003 when he ran) The problem even existed in the days of NEPA and analog meters. Illegal connections, people not paying for power, etc. And when DISCOS and GENCOS complain of lack of funds people will come and say they are lying. Meanwhile, power cannot improve in Nigeria...until people stop lying to themselves and PAY THEIR BILLS. 2 Likes |

Openedheavens:they bypass the lite, instead of u to be using it like that, u say u are righteous now they have cut ur lite and there is nothing u can do than going to pay. That is what over curiosity causes.do u know how much the useless Nepa say I'm owing them, about 410k. They cut my lite since June last year and they are still bringing bill of not less than 14k monthly. While even when the lite was there i don't even use electricity of 2k in a month. I have decided to wait and see the end of the whole thing let's see how they will get the money. Minimum wage is 18k and they want me to pay bill of 14k not like I have bakery or any commercial stuff in the cpd. |

Get a lawyer, pay the bill. When payment for the next rent comes, file an appeal in court against the land lord for your rent to be deducted from the bill. Have all the facts right. 2 Likes 1 Share |

You have done the right thing. You experience; though painful, is more of a blessing to prospective tenants reading this and a blessing to you as well. One day, they will detect and the stupid greedy tenant that thinks electricity falls like rain will pay both the outstanding debts and the estimated consumption ever since the meter was installed. The fact that someone could bypass for months and the power providers did not detect is a sign of failure. Your report alone should have given birth to investigations into history of energy purchase on that meter; this I'm sure must affect the landlord somehow. My suggestions; 1. Propose sharing of the debt to your landlord and if he sees no sense in it, 2. (Subtly) threaten the landlord with formal report of bypassing meter on his property. Let him know the likely consequences. 3. If he will return your money, you can move out. 4. Take it as your debt, approach your energy supplier to discuss payment pattern; I think there is a way they spread it over a period of time. 5. Run on generator until house rent expires. But, remember they will bypass again to trap another unsuspecting tenants. Well, if you end up paying the debt, you have lost nothing. Those people calling your action stupid are the almighty wise Nigerians that complain about everything, but find it difficult to do anything the right way. Check them, they always lack. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Reading comments. Nigerians are not ready to pay for power. It's very sad the the disco cannot even investigate that an account with N118k debt did not make payment for a long time yet was using light. 3 Likes |

Openedheavens: I don't think there is anything you can do, its a normal procedure landlords does now, they will shift the NEPA dept on the prepaid, myself am about doing the same. I have a place here tenants left a bill of 1M for me, I will be going for NEPA dispute resolutions tomorrow, what ever remains from the dept it will share it among the 7 prepaid meterai requested for. There is nothing you are suppose to be worried about, its just a fraction of your current recharge that will always be deducted from you current charge. In the long run you are losing because you are now running on Generator, and you are spending more. So sort it out and allow your family enjoy life so that your kids can watch cartoon. 2 Likes 1 Share |

jarkbauer:You can't threaten your landlord, going through that approach will only make ykubget quite notice and also the other tenants getting same, the remaining tenants that are also involved in the case can even be jailed by the landlord. If I where a landlord and you threaten me, bro you and everybody that is involve in prepaid meter bypassing will be jailed by me. Its very certain the landlord is not aware. In mine house, I have told all tenants, once the prepaid meter comes, Know body bypasses. Strictly on prepaid, don't want any tenants causing problems for me in the future 4 Likes |

EmmanuelCena: Involving a lawyer doesn't necessarily mean going to Court! Lawyers these days are inclined to Alternative Dispute Resolution! The Op's lawyer can write a threatening letter to his landlord with a view of persuading him to offset the electricity bill from his next rent or refunding the Op's entire current rent! The Op can as well visit Lagos State Mediation Centres with branches in different districts of Lagos! They will quickly resolve the issue between the Op and his landlord within 2weeks!! 3 Likes |
