OK I'm sorry I can't post the drama now cos I'm about to board a flight, I'll post it later on

The year is 1937, and it's the period when Japan were basically bullying the life out of Korea. Seoul was known as gyeongseong or whatever in those days, Korean youth were not free to do anything including dating, rich people had to pay matchmakers to organize secret meetings for them, and if you were poor well... We see a locally dressed girl (jo bo ah) and when I say local I mean raggedy hanbok, in those days city people wore vintage western outfits only villagers dressed in hanboks, OK we see her staring all excited and wide eyed at the city so I'm guessing it's probably her first time there, she stops to buy an issue of a romantic magazine (e.g hints but like more morally romantic, wait lmao, I just remembered how I used to sneak and read my auntys hints tsk tsk, it's not today that I spoil), the vendor asks her to buy more issues, she says her salary is not enough so I guess we've established that she's poor. We see an introduction, she's Lee suk ja and this is her 3rd month in the city, she came to look for a husband, we see her scanning men and figuring out their husband material potential. She applies lipstick and says "a man and a woman can meet anywhere". She's trying to catch men's eyes when a poster flies towards and covers her face, she reads it and it's a poster advertising a club "venus club" organizing speed dating for young people, she is excited and goes there. We see son ho jun and his own introduction "cha joo oh, CEO of venus club". He's overseeing the Activities and we hear his voice over, he says everyone wants to be liberal, but when it comes to marriage, they only think about money (me: before nko). He says the three most important conditions for marriage are education, high salary and prestigious background, so his job is to hook people up according to how they fit and their needs (lmao I learnt that the darker a man's suit is the richer he is lewl).

Anyway the club regulars are all matched up and it's dance time, suk ja(jba) has been observing everything going on and she's hopeful that she'll get married if she joins, a guy asks her to dance and she accepts, oh boy everyone is doing the jive or some western dance and my girl is basically doing taekwondo, jumping upandan like kangaroo, cha joo oh sees her and is shocked "what is a girl like that doing here", the club members start to get irritated with her presence and she even injured the poor boy that asked her to dance (aigoo). After the meeting, joo oh drags her out and she apologizes, he tells her it's alright she can leave, she says "but I haven't found my Mr right yet" (me: omona), he scoffs and tells her to just go home and marry her parents choice for her, it's best. She asks why? That she wants to marry someone of her own choice, he tells her they're in gyeongseong and she's wearing outdated and horrible clothes, she says is it because he's a male matchmaker or is he not just good at his job, he says well she can just go to an ahjumma matchmaker, that not Anyone can climb the social ladder. He walks away and she screams "whatever, she can find a modern boy all by herself".

A car with armed men stop in front of the club, a soldier says the country is at war, what is happening with the youths partying, his subordinate hayato says they'll control the entertainment places.

Suk ja is at work, she's a sales girl at a department store, she's lamenting to her boss about how she was humiliated at the couples festival, the boss says oh is it that club run by the son of the bankrupt family (me: oh so he's broke too lol), she asks her if she'll really not go back to jecheon and suk ja says no and told her to call her suji since she's now in Seoul (me: well I guess I'm calling bae Suzy, suk ja from now on), as the boss is talking to her, the feather on the boss's cap kept rubbing her face lol, the woman dress sense is Chai, I can't even describe it, anyway she tells sukja, cha joo oh has a very good intuition when it comes to matchmaking.

The next scene she's in his office begging him to help her get married, of course he's reluctant cos she looks like a country bumpkin. He tells her the membership fee is high, she brings out all of her life savings and says how much, he says the conditions are also strict, everything is by rank, he asks her where she lives and if she has a job, she mentions the name of the store she works in, when he and his assistant hears it they think she's the owner of the store (aigoo). They start wondering why She would be dressed poorly, they suddenly start addressing her with respect, they ask her for her name, she says suji (lewl), they praise her sophisticated name (aigoo). They promise to help her find a man. She fills their membership form

Dislikes : poverty, debt etc

Cha joo oh finds a few men interested in dating her, the first potential lover is a guy named Choi cheong, he owns a great amount of land, she's practicing before she goes on her date and her boss suggests a makeover, suk ja is scared cos the woman's dress sense is aigoo, even me sef I fear.

Cha jun is waiting for her in front of his club so he can introduce her to Choi cheong, she arrives in a hand drawn cart and boy does she look ravishing, as expected cha joo oh falls her her (me: ghen ghen, I like it when the boy is the first one to fall in love in dramas cos most times it's more interesting, when girls are the first, most often than not, they go about doing nonsense things eg playful kiss). She apologizes for coming late and asks him if Choi cheong is angry, he stutters "no, it's OK for a woman to be a little late" (me: no it's not mtchewww African timers). They're sitted and she's waiting for him to introduce her to her date but oga is just staring at her, he finally does the introduction, tells her the school cc graduated from and how much land he has and tells cc she's the owner of the department store, she pretends she didn't hear that, joo oh wants to keep Staring at her but she signals for him to leave, he hits his head with his hand and tells himself to get it together. Cc tells her a woman running a store is amazing, she smiles and thanks him, he asks her how about they move to new York after the wedding, she says it sounds great, she saw in a magazine... He says good, so he can go to new York alone, she's like alone? Not together?, he goes "Omo, what would a woman be doing in New York, a woman should prepare meals in the kitchen..", she ends the date, goes to scold cha joo oh, his intuition is trash and she just wasted her money, he says she has to go on 3 dates with cc before she can conclude, she says she's sure she doesn't want him and she blames herself for coming to a male matchmaker, he gets angry and tells her to know her place, cc is too good for her (me: if I slap your mouth) he tells her she's a bottom class member, she tells him his family went bankrupt, he should be the bottom class. He later apologizes and says he'll do better for her next date, she says she trusts him.

We see a man counting money and lamenting that it's not enough, cha joo oh walks in, so I guess that's his dad, he asks him if he'll keep working as a matchmaker, he went to university, he should do something greater, he asks his dad if it's the something greater he did that their family went down, he says unless you're going to help me, don't tell me what to do, he goes into a room where his younger sister is reading the same magazine we Saw suk ja reading, she asks if he made enough money to pay their debt, he ignores her and asks what she's reading, she shows him a lake and tells him if one goes to that lake and looks at the stars there, the person would find true love, he lovingly tells her to stop talking nonsense and go to bed.

It's another date with a Kim yeongmin, cha joo oh says they both like to read romance novels, turns out they're both fans of that magazine, he reaches out to hold her hand, she's shocked, while joo oh looks like he wants to cut those hands lol, yeongmin asks her if she likes him, she's stuttering and he's like "suji ssi, please be my 2nd wife". Suk ja and cha jun both scream what?!. Next thing we know, a fat woman storms in angrily and starts to drag suji's hair accusing her of husband snatching (just a day in the life of me and @RaphaellaDD), lol joo oh tries to help by saying suji didn't seduce anyone, he arranged the meeting, he also gets into trouble with the wife. Lol as the wife is dragging her hair, suji is also dragging yeongmin's hair. They are dragged to the police station and suji says she wants her money back, she's not getting married again, he says he didn't know yeongmin was married, that a lot of people pretend to be who they are not. Hayato comes in and asks what's wrong, an officer says there was a problem from venus club, hayato hits the officer and says he thought he ordered that all entertainment houses be shut down. joo oh pleads that his club is not for Entertainment but for building healthy relationships, hayato asks them to shut it down. Suk ja's boss comes in and screams "suk ja ya, where is my sukja" in satoori lol she replies also in satoori and runs to her to report joo oh. Hayato asks his officers to get rid of the shouting woman, she goes to him and asks how much will he collect to release her employee, joo oh realizes she's an employee, she is embarrassed, he's like so she's suk ja and an employee (lol).

She's walking sadly on the street, her clothes and hair are disheveled cos of yeongmin's wife, she flashes back to 3 months ago, her father betrothed her to their old neighbor because her mom passed away and they are broke, she cries no, she won't marry a stranger, she says everyone else went to gyeongseong to study and get married, why does her father want to ruin her life. He says a woman must obey her father when she's young and her husband after marriage, she says her mom would have lived if she went to the hospital in gyeongseong, that she won't live a miserable life like her mom, she says she won't see him again, we are back in the present, she's wondering why she's unfortunate as she has spent all of her money in joining the club.

Cha joo oh is coming from a pawn shop (poor baby) he sees sukja walking dejectedly, she's hitting her legs cos they hurt as she's wearing heels she's not used to, she sees him, walks up to him and says "for real, please help me get married", they sit somewhere and he asks her how She wants it to be, she says she just thinks if she marries well, everything will be happy, he says but she'll still be the same person, a marriage won't make everything happy, she watches a rich family pass by and she says she wants to live like them, it's easier to get married than wait for money to fall from the sky, she says she tries hard but people look down on her cos she's country and a joseon woman, she says if he's not going to help her get married he should return her money cos she's broke, he says if he helps her get married will she give him bonus?, if she will he'll treat her specially, she excitedly holds his arm and says really (he's flustered and mutters to himself "she knows how to make a man's heart flutter" (me: awwnnn), she promises that her boss will give him all of her gold rings, he says he'll treat her special and asks her to follow him, she tries to stand but strains her ankle, he goes "aigoo, you really need special care", he walks off and comes back with flat shoes for her, he says when she gets married she also has to pay him for the shoes, she's smiling and grateful and oops I think she's fallen for him (cuttteeee).

We see him coaching her on how to impress her upcoming date, there are some things that require him to touch her hand and they're both nervous and me I'm loving it, she keeps rejecting all the people he brings her, in the process they keep getting closer (me: smiling like a fish). They are having lunch, or rather she is cos he's not Eating but working, she tells him to eat that he's also important, he's touched (me: why won't he just do me a favor and kiss her), he's very considerate of her and she's blushing and I'm dying lol.

At the police station, they prepare a list of entertainment houses to be closed down, they choose only the Korean businesses, they also issue a command that all Korean unmarried ladies be transported to Manchuria to help in the war. Joo's dad overhears the plan as he goes to pay his month's rent. He gets home and starts fighting with his daughter because he wants to marry her off, she says she's not going to marry a stranger and he's telling her it's for her good. Joo comes in as she's telling their dad she will run away, he asks the dad why she will marry when she's just a kid, he says she's not a kid. Joo oh asks if he wants to lose them too, he says if the dad had not used all his money in supporting the independent movement, they wouldn't be broke. He says they are not there because they like him but because they have no where else to go.

The next scene, sukja receives an invitation to a date with a poet, joo tells her to eat before coming so she won't be cranky and she's happier with his concern than with the prospect of the date. Her boss gives her a pair of heels for the date and tells her she's looking different, she asks her if she's in love with someone, she coughs and says she's not, she says she'll close up the shop after her date.

They are at a restaurant

Waiting for the poet and he's giving her information on his parents and how wealthy they are, she's fascinated and joo is looking at her with longing, he starts to tell her people who have had an easy life are cheaper cos they've not had to deal with obstacles (me: lmao). She starts to worry that she might not be up to his class but he tells her there's nothing wrong with her, they have a bit of a staring moment which is interrupted by the arrival of the poet. His name is yuto and he's basically perfect, handsome, polite etc, they take a walk and poor girl is dying in her heels, yuto tells her he's sure his parents will like her, he asks where her dad is and if he'll like him, she nervously says "maybe", she's still visibly uncomfortable with her heels and he bends down, she thinks he's about to help her out but oga picks a leaf from the ground and tells her it is believed that if you pick a leaf from the ground, your love comes true, she's disappointed cos she remembers joo oh bought her flats to relieve her pain. She says "will love come that easily?" he offers to buy her dinner

Next scene joo is in his office feeling sad cos yuto sent him a letter indicating his interest in a 2nd date with suji. His assistant comes in and asks why he's alone in the dark and he asks if they should hold another speed dating festival. He says they need to earn.

Suji is at her workplace worrying about the lies she told yuto about her background. She's staring at the shoes joo oh bought for Her and worrying that she can't reach him. Joo oh is in his office remembering her restriction about poor men and businessmen (aigoo he's both). She enters his office and asks him if he's been so busy that he didn't even ask about her first date, he says he's sure she did well and she doesn't need his help again. She moves close to him, he's nervous and she asks him why he's so grumpy. He asks what's wrong with him, she leans closer to his face and says he looks haggard, that she's sure he's been skipping meals. His father rushes in to tell him his sister is missing and shows him the note she left, she wrote it in the romance magazine, she wrote "I'm going to find my real love, don't look for me". Suji says she knows where the location in the book is.

They go there and start shouting her name, looking for her. They search for her till late in the evening, joo oh apologizes for hindering sukja from going on her date. She says she would have probably messed it up since he wouldn't be there with her.

We see her dad lamenting and missing her (apparently her hometown is the location in the magazine), she takes joo oh to her home since it's dark. The father is excited to see her and notices all her Seoul dressing and immediately starts scolding her aigoo. She says she just wants to stay for a night. He asks her to leave and she says like you chased mom away, he carries a cane to hit her and she runs to hide behind joo oh. He uses his hand to protect her and the father screams Thief and tries to hit him, then we hear someone scream "orabani", the sister appears from nowhere and rushes to him, he's surprised, the rat turns to sukja's dad and asks him if he's a gangster, sukja screams at her to be polite, she asks if sukja is also a gangster. Joo oh apologizes to the dad and asks his sister what she's doing there, he asks if she's eaten and she says she hasn't, that she's there cos she got lost and that's the only house with light

They are all eating apart from sukja who's forming anger, she walks off and joo oh goes after her, they take a stroll towards the area that was illustrated in the romance magazine, he says its beautiful and she says it's not, that she hardly comes there cos of a bad memory, he asks what memory cos the romance novel says anyone who comes there falls in love. She says that was where she spread her mom's ashes, he says at least she did that. He asks what's so special about this place in the novel that his sister came, she says it's just a story about a local girl and a teacher from gyeongseong, she says she used to love those stories before but now all she cares about is conditions. He says there's nothing wrong with caring about conditions, that it's better than trusting in a love that fails, she's like is that why he's running a marriage agency, dividing people into classes, he says he also has a bad memory, he flashes back to a girl breaking up with him because he's broke, he says there are a lot of people that commit Suicide because they can't live up to the standards of the person they married and people who die because their parents opposed their marriage, he says he didn't even get to be there when his mom was buried. She says well he's doing well now and pats his head, he stares at her and mutters to himself "she really knows how to make a guy's heart flutter". He stands up and says they should go, she asks where?, he says home, he asks her if she isn't hungry, that his sister tried to eat all the food but he and her dad hid some portion for her, he tells her not to whine about her life again that she has a father waiting for her with a hot meal.

The next day they are preparing to leave for the city, joo oh thanks and apologizes to her dad again. The dad gives him something wrapped and says he should take care of his precious daughter for him, he says OK. Apparently it's boiled eggs he wrapped, on their way sukja teases about how her dad is the most old fashioned person in the world. Joo oh again apologizes for making her miss her date. She says he can make up for it by buying her lunch, they both smile and continue walking.

They show the military men plotting about how they'll lie that they are taking the young women to Manchuria for education purposes. Joo oh and his sister get home and he tells his dad he won't allow her marry early. The dad tells him about what he overheard at the police station and says he'll take the sister to their uncle in Tokyo and advises joo oh to find Something else to do since if all single women are taken away, he'll be out of business.

He goes to his office and his assistant shows him the notice of the closing down of their agency. A military man enters, he says some of them are worried about the marriages of their children and asks if they can organize speed dating for high ranking officer's kids, they are happy and agree, the man even says he wants to join cos he's gay and looking for love, apparently he has a crush on joo oh lol.

Joo oh goes to seek for permission from hayato. He tells him high ranking officers will attend, he gives permission but says if joo oh makes even the slightest mistake, he'll take him to Manchuria too, joo oh spies the list of people going to Manchuria and sees sukja's name on the list. He sees a notice saying 100 Korean women would be sent to Manchuria apart from those married or engaged to Japanese men.

Yuto comes to see joo oh and tells him he hasn't heard from suji, he says if she accepts, he's ready to marry her right away. Joo oh fixes a date for them at a restaurant. Suji goes to his office angrily and says, they were supposed to go for dinner that night (his promise for making her miss her date), he says they can go another time, she says she wants it today, she asks him if he really doesn't know who she wants to meet and eat with. He said but she wants to get married, he'll help her out with Yuto. She says she doesn't want that anymore, he says she should know her place, no one Wants to marry a gold digger but he made it happen for her with Yuto, that she should go to him. She gets angry and says she forgot her place, she went to fall in love with a man in debt when she herself is poor, she says when she and Yuto gets married he shouldn't even think about coming to borrow money from them (lmao) and she storms out into the rain, crying, she sees the notice about Manchuria and decides to go. Joo oh is sad in his office.

The most senior officer is preparing to attend the couple festival for children of officials, his plan is to go there to get in the good books of the senior officials then go to the train with the single ladies to Manchuria, his 2nd in command tries to follow him to also get a promotion but he hits him and says he'll go alone.

Suk ja is saying her goodbye to her boss, she says she wants to go and learn in Manchuria. Guests start to arrive at the couple festival but you can tell joo oh is sad and not interested, he can't even welcome the guests. Sukja's boss comes to attend the festival and tells joo oh she just escorted sukja to the train going to Manchuria, he's shocked and afraid.

We see sukja and other girls waiting at the train station surrounded by officers, she's regretting not saying goodbye to joo oh, the officers ask them to board, sukja asks how long it will be before they come back, hayato said they are never coming back, the girls are shocked and afraid, sukja says she thought they are going for a while, he orders them "shut up" and tells them, they have to contribute to Japan. She starts to beg that she no longer wants to go, the rest of the girls join her, he slaps her.

Joo oh leaves his festival and starts running to the train station. His assistant and sukja's boss are supposed to cover for him but they don't know what to do as the officials start arriving, they initiate some mumu games to buy time and sukja's boss spikes the top officials drink with hard American liquor and succeeds in getting him drunk.

The girls are forced into the train. Joo oh arrives and lies to hayato that his oga disappeared, he orders all the soldiers to go look for him, they lock the girls up and rush out of the train station, joo oh tries to find a way to open the lock.

Back at the festival, oga is drunk and is head over heels in love with sukja's boss lol, he's imagining her as a pretty, young babe.

Joo oh hurts his hand in the process of trying to free the girls and he gets caught. Apparently hayato didn't go to find his boss, he wants to get the promotion for bringing the girls. He points a gun at joo oh and asks him how dare he interfere with the emperors order, joo oh says all he wants is to take his member, his favorite member, sukja is touched. Hayato pulls the trigger and just as he's about to shoot, someone hits him at the back of his head, it's joo oh's dad, he tells his son "even though I can't give you money for your business, I can still help you", he picks The gun and hands it to joo oh who shoots the lock with it, the door opens, sukja runs out and they hug (me: awwnnn), they all run out but are intercepted by the remaining officers, they start fighting, the girls beat the officers up with their luggage and everything they can.

Later we see a notice that the order to take women to Manchuria has been canceled. The officers were kicked out, one for being a drunkard, the other for being a traitor. Sukja and her dad are in their hometown, they now run a store. She receives a letter requesting for a date, the letter says she should come to the place where anyone can fall in love (me: dgvshjvxhjfdj). She goes and sees joo oh standing waiting for her (me: he's so handsome eotteokhe) he walks towards her and asks what she thinks about her potential lover, he asks if she likes "him". She says I'm sorry I have someone I like, he's like what?!. She walks towards him, smiles and says I like you, I like you joo oh, he smiles and she says don't you know these days women say no when they mean yes (me : shut up bi!tch! No means no, you people are the ones ruining the world for women). He says I know (me: urghhh) but you're a yes for me. They smile and stare and smile and stare and bla bla bla (me : mtchewww instead of them to kiss).

Last scene is joo oh's assistant now runs a tourism business, he puts singles on a train going to jecheon and tells them they are going to a place where anyone can find love. The end.


I rate this 5/10

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT:

1. The cast
2. The story, of course it could be better but it's 1 episode so I don't mind, I like how they were able to create humor out of something horrible that happened in real life, the scene where the girls were beating the soldiers was just stupid lol

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
1. I know I'll probably sound insane but my no 2 up there is the same reason I have. The Koreans really suffered in the hands of the Japanese, women were forced to become ho's to Japanese soldiers in those days and even though I liked the humorous way they used it here, some part of me is like this is real shi!t that happened, if my grandmother was forced to become a comfort woman would I be here laughing at this drama, but then again that's just the 1% overserious killjoy part of me thinking this way.
