He is simply playing the sweeper role. Nothing wrong with it. I also played this way when I played defence.

In every defence, you have a field nigga and a house nigga. The field nigga do the dirty work while the house nigga sweep up.

Don't let that confuse you into thinking the field nigga is the better defender. The house nigga is the one actually measuring distances, setting offside traps and controlling the field nigga position on the pitch. House nigga will only engage with the striker physically as a last resort, and 9 times out of 10 will pick the loose ball like candy after the field nigga duel with the striker finish.

You have to find a common ground to compare both entities.

Maybe I should compare Raul's Gonzalez 2003 season to Aguero's 2019. How will it make sense? One's carrier has ended, meaning we have seen the best of him. The other is still actively serving. Haba

Wait for Dijk to end his career and compare, or use a current player this season to compare the stats. Even the Smelling own wey you post na old season. Put Smalling current season stats so e go make sense

I'm not interested in Dijk's pattern. I'm not concerned. But make your point educative and purposeful by comparing Van Dijk's current season with Smalling's current season or any other defender.

I could as well dig up a stat from the 90's to compare with Dijk, and it won't make sense.

He won UEFA player of the year in 2018/2019 season, as of today, that's his best, so he is right to pick that. Meanwhile, I really don't see him beat that 2018/2019 performance till he retires.

There are over 200 defenders actively playing across Europe. Why must it be a 2007/2008 stat that you need to prove how overrated he is?

Maybe you don't understand the discussion, don't compare Van Dijk to the likes of Terry, Fagbo and Vidic, even Kompany, they are not mates at all. He never reach that level. For example, see the picture below.

If you want us to compare him with current defenders, of course, he can make top 3, but the main thing is, you need to agree that that boy is not one of the best ever in the EPL, not yet.

And yes, we will be here to have this conversation again in a couple of years from now.

Better pray that OGS performs, we are currently 8th on the table, and if we dont win against Chelsea, no champions league football niyen o. Of course, I am assuming that a team like Inter or even Sevilla will beat us in the Europa League, so, no back door to the champions league for us.
