Adenomyosis is a female-specific disorder that occurs due to abnormal growth of endometrium cells in a woman’s uterus. It affects women in their reproductive age mostly between the age group of 30-40 years. This prolong condition of adenomyosis may lead to pregnancy related issues in women such as miscarriage or problems in becoming pregnant.

Impact of Adenomyosis on Women Infertility

On the basis of available studies and reports, adenomyosis can impact fertility among women either as a potential cofactor of several pathological processes related to fertility including leiomyoma, polyps or endometriosis. Evidence suggest that a combined effect of adenomyosis and pelvic endometriosis causes infertility in most of the cases. Adenomyosis induces derangements of three recognized pathways including implantation, endometrial receptivity and uterotubal transport, which impact the fertility of a woman. The patient experiences blockage of embryo transport and sperm migration caused by intrauterine anatomical distortion.

Symptoms and Treatment Options

Most common symptoms of adenomyosis comprise of dysmenorrheal, unusual menstrual cycle and infertility. Sometimes, it may lead to irreversible damage to the reproductive capability of women. In some cases, the delayed diagnosis and treatment often result in permanent impacts of a woman’s health.

The abnormal tissue growth cycle continues leading to the enlarged uterus and heavy painful periods. Women experiencing prolonged symptoms of heavy bleeding, cramps during menstruation, interfering in daily activities, need to consult the doctor. Adenomyosis can be detected by performing transvaginal ultrasound and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imagining) scan. However, confirmation of the disease can be made after pathological surgery.
Various forms of adenomyosis can be detected in different patients such as clustered, diffused, scattered or localized.
Conservative surgery has proved to be best surgical treatment for adenomyosis so far both in terms of enhancing fertility rates, controlling irregular uterine bleeding and reducing pelvic pain. Women in their reproductive age with symptoms of adenomyosis must opt for less invasive procedures along with medical treatment. However, those patients who are on long term medication should go for conservative surgery option.

Adenomyosis is a typical medical condition that affects women’s fertility leaving them in physical and mental distress. So far, several treatment alternatives have been developed to cure women suffering from adenomyosis such as oral medication, conservative surgery, minimally invasive procedures and high-intensity ultrasound. Oral medication, sometimes do more harm to reproductive organs and fertility of a woman. Conservative surgery is one of the established procedures to treat adenomyosis among women.

There are more than enough fertility clinics in Nigeria. Going to India makes no sense especially with the risk of your kidney being stolen without your consent.
