aye88: Read up you’ll get enough evidence or ask a citizen. That's the fraud on taxpayers ,Trump and citizens are complaining about in birth tourism. It’s not a self pay discount, it’s charged back. If not why do you’ve to pay it back if it was really a legal discount for non-tax payers? I’m not against birth tourism, that’s why I’m here ,but let’s be honest it’s not A LEGAL DISCOUNT. If not it’s America ,the doctors would have dragged them to court by now because it’s affecting them financially. People get as much as 8,000$ -10,000$ discount they’re not aware of until they request for zero balance letter for visa renewal, Newyork and Virginia for example. |

Bros I have carried out many transactions both medically and even with government institutions that has a clause like "if you pay upfront you get this discount but if you pay after the service no discounts for you" does that makes it illegal? Or is it because it is birth tourism and it involves citizenship? We need to always tell ourselves the truth at times. Is it only in US that discount is illegal? Aren't discounts in hospital bills applicable in other countries? The tax payback or what is it been called you collect at the airport after showing all the receipts of all your shopping and purchases too should be illegal too....... and not only medical bills.......... Honestly I'm still trying to wrap my head around this discount thing. If really discounts offered are not legal and it comes back to "bite" the receiver then how come only Nigerians are bearing the brunt? I know of 3 Nigerians who don't reside in Nigeria, they travelled to the USA from their country of residence to have their babies, they got discounts and they have successfully renewed their visas with two going back to have babies again. I met them when I went to have my baby and since then we have been in touch. In fact one of them told me when she went to renew her visa, she wasn't even asked why she was travelling or why she travelled initially...e get wetin Nigerians do wey make them single us out. Like my people say "den nor dey beat pickin the day wey e spill milk, na the day wey e spill water". 6 Likes |

SleekFullah: Even the person from doctoresperati or whats yhe name of that hospital said only Nigerians have issues renewing their visas. That their other patients from india, china, and co have no issues regarding discounts for renewal. Anyway, we will be alright. Its just a matter of time. 5 Likes |

Dare834:Hmmm so this kind of fraud can happen in the great America? So I have some questions about the legality of the hospital discounts in question. 1. Birth Tourism and hospital discounts in America have been on for many many years, how come the US embassy in Nigeria realized these hospital discounts are not legal under Trump who is a racist and hates birth Tourism from third world countries (Shithole countries according to Trump)? Same Trump considered stopping automatic American citizenship till he was reminded Jus soli is enshrined in the American constitution. - https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/22/us/birthright-citizenship-14th-amendment-trump.html 2. How come Nigerians who renew their American visas in American Embassies outside Nigeria are not questioned about these hospital discounts you claim are illegal? I know a couple of people who birthed in America, got discount, renewed their Visas outside Nigeria without questions around the discount. 3. Let's take your argument these discounts are illegal because of what you stated, how is it the fault of the cash paying patient that the hospital goes behind to claim back the discount without the knowledge of the patient? I genuinely doubt this, you seem to think our Nigerian "anyhowness" of no systems and processes applies to other parts of the world. Before you claim money back from a country like America, there is a rigorous process and system that will check the kind of "easy fraud" you stated about hospitals claiming discount back without the knowledge of the patients. 4. Aside the "general Nairaland talk" that US hospitals claim discounts back without knowledge of the patients, do you have any link to a story or news that verifies this claim? Lastly, I have placed links below to buttress the point that hospital discounts are legal: https://www.advisory.com/daily-briefing/2016/02/18/these-hospitals-tell-patients-pay-in-cash https://www.consumerreports.org/healthcare-costs/prepay-hospital-bill/ https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-healthcare-hospital-payments/ballooning-bills-more-u-s-hospitals-pushing-patients-to-pay-before-care-idUSKBN17F1CM 3 Likes

[quote author=aye88 post=86858062] Even the person from doctoresperati or whats yhe name ......yeah this is true...not even the doctoresperati alone...I stayed with a concierge that caters for pregnant mums and vacation people. We have a forum like this where we share our experiences and all...just keeping in touch basically. All the non-Nigerians don't have issues with renewal and they got discounts too. 1 Like |

And the hospitals are not called out or investigated...instead it is patients who are not aware that are being punished plus once upon a time people were going to have their babies, getting this discounts and renewing their visas without any ish. 1 Like |

SleekFullah:I also raised it in my post, how come this hospital discount issue is a US Embassy in Nigeria thing? Abi is it only the medical discount given to Nigerians that are illegal The world is now a real global village that people keep in touch with people round the world and know how things are done elsewhere. My thought is, the US Embassy in Nigeria looked at different trival issues they can use to deny Nigerians visas enmasse, this so called discount was the strongest thing they could hold on to and the thing is working for them to the point Nigerians are even paying back discounts they got legally (To me this is donation to the hospitals. How do they reconcile their accounting books since the transactions have long been closed and patients deemed to have fully paid their Bills). I bet the US Embassy people laugh at how they have been able to push Nigerians to the wall and squeeze out hard earned money from them in the name or paying back discounts just to get US Visas. The joke is on Nigerians! 12 Likes |

Abuleoshi: Exactly. It's so obvious that this appears targeted at Nigerians living in Nigeria. We are not iliterates, the self pay option is always clearly explained as discount given because you paid cash upfront. If the hospitals were perpetruating fraud as the US Embassy claims then why would hospitals still have these packages clearly stated on their websites. Why would they gladly and willing give you a zero balance with a letter to submit anywhere you like stating that the discounted amount is not and will not be charged back. You cant tell me that all these hospitals are so brazen to keep breaking the law without the fear of having their licenses revoked. Rule of law is properly upheld in the US and the system works, you cannot brazenly be commiting fraud like you no send without having the Govt come after you. It's been how many years why have they not done anything to these hospitals? The joke has really been on Nigerians living in Nigeria. Imagine having to pay the hospital that has closed your account. If the US Embassy or Govt knows for certain that its illegal, why are they then allowing the hospitals cash out with double payments? Since the discounted amount has purportedly been gotten back from the insurance companies or government why ask us to pay that amount to the same hospital again? Shouldn't they ask us to pay the Government since it's the Govt that has been ripped off according to them. Infact some hospitals have tried to reach them to explain yet they dont respond to emails or calls etc. So what then is this about if not just hogwash? Na condition dey make crayfish bend. Our desire for better for our children is what is being used against us. Anyways it's well, very soon this same rejected stone Nigeria will become the corner stone IN JESUS NAME;AMEN. Nobody should dare quote me with rubbish about then stay in your country and give birth... You know yourselves! 9 Likes |

Dare834: Pls help us demystify the illegality. Because it remains a mystery to some of us. Even people schooling in the US get discounted amounts based on payment structure. Its obvious when you see the itemized bill. Is that one charged back too? Even when you attend global conferences and training and get an Early bird discounted fee is that one also illegal? Let's not think Nigerians living in Nigeria are daft. We might be paying this discounts back because we really just want what we want and are resilient but it's not enough to think that we are foolish. Sometimes I wonder why the hospitals include all the plenty discounted amounts in the itemized bill in the first place? You can keep that for your internal accounting just give us the breakdown of what we paid for.... but then again I think they keep doing it cus they know are not doing anything wrong so they clearly show everything for their own record keeping and all. Plus if this were really fraud, the Departmemt of Justice (DoJ) would have come for these hospitals by now. Monitors like PwC, Deloitte and the rest would have been placed in their organisations and every transaction would have been scrutinised for a minimum of 3 years while they are paying fines. Some of us here are Fraud Examiners by Profession and while we know Health Insurance Fraud exists, this one doesn't qualify. So please be fact based when declaring something a fraud not just because someone referred to it in a seemingly intelligent way without evidence. Enough said! 11 Likes |

It would get better one day. The same people & nations that have laughed at & scorned us will seek us & come to our rising. And for those Nigerians living abroad who out of complex are running down their fellow Nigerians just because they feel they are in 'privileged' circumstances, who climbed the ladder to get to where they are & have decided to pull down the same ladder in order to prevent others from getting to where they are, who never see anything good in Nigeria & Nigerians, who tar every Nigerian with the same brush of crime, criminality & corruption, I hail una. Echinedu1:Those who can "donate" (Pay back discount given) to hospitals where they gave birth should carry on. No amount of what we say on this thread will discourage people who are desperate to renew their US visas. Sad but it is what it is. Me and my wife will never go to US Embassy in Nigeria as long as Trump is President and the discriminatory practice against Nigerians of denying applicants visa based on discount given continues. Like someone said, those who will still pay back the discount will , after all said and done. Everyone has their reasons for wanting the visa. The only reason i have to want to go to the us for now is vacation. My kids are citizens already, they cannot collect that one from them. If i need to shop, london is there. You wjll shop in all the malls till you drop. Most US stores are in canada, thats another option. Plenty schengen countries to visit. When US calm down, we will try again. 10 Likes |

I recently relocated to the US last December I don’t think discount is illegal It’s also available to both residents and USA citizens especially when you are paying cash When paying for gas (car fuel) there is different prices for cash and paying with debit or credit card You always get a discount when you pay cash Not illegal at all 9 Likes |
