Garba Shehu Reacts To Uproar Over Plan To Give $100 Abacha Loot To Bagudu by 2mercy: 11:59am On Feb 22, 2020
The Presidency, in a reaction to the report on an alleged attempt by the federal government to hand over about $100 million United States authorities say was stolen by a former Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, to Kebbi State Governor Abubakar Bagudu, advised against any action that would complicate ongoing efforts to recover more money from abroad.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, when contacted yesterday, said the Embassy of the United States might be approached for any clarification on the agreement already reached by the three parties.

Shehu, in a text message to our correspondent, said: “We have a lot more money to recover oversees and no one has the right to complicate things for the government of our country. “The U.S. and the British crown dependency of Jersey have agreed with the president and government of Nigeria to repatriate $308m connected to General Sani Abacha, the three governments said.

“By a decision of this government, the entire sum will be paid to the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), and will be used in expediting the construction of the three major infrastructure projects across Nigeria – namely Lagos – Ibadan Expressway, Abuja – Kano Expressway and the Second Niger Bridge.

“The position of the Buhari administration is still the same on this. The Embassy of the U.S. may be approached for any clarification on the agreement already reached by the three parties.”

The report said that the Buhari administration says a 17-year-old agreement entitles Bagudu to the funds and prevents Nigeria from assisting the U.S., according to recent filings from the District Court for the District of Columbia in Washington. The disagreement, according to Bloomberg, may hamper future cooperation between Nigeria and the U.S. to recover money moved abroad by Abacha.

“This case illustrates how complex and contentious repatriating stolen assets to Nigeria can be,” Bloomberg quoted Matthew Page, an associate fellow at London-based Chatham House and former Nigeria expert for U.S.

Intelligence agencies, as saying. “Instead of welcoming U.S. efforts, Nigeria’s lawyers appear to be supporting the interests of one of the country’s most powerful families,” he added.

Lol. Where is the reaction here? I feel sorry for Nigeria with the calibre of people in government, most of whom are not even worthy of being an ordinary councillor, let alone president, governors, ministers, senators, reps members...even somebody like garba shehu who should be an errand boy to a LG chairman....what a pity. I've read inside punch earlier today that buhari-led administration actually wanted to release that huge sum to bagudu, who ferried same Nigerian money on Abacha's instruction. Garba sehu was just beating about the bush.

Is it the money connected to Sani abacha....or the money looted by sani abacha through Bagudu who is now governor of kebi state?. Buhari was also active in Abacha government and the same once said Abacha wasn't a corrupt man.Thats why I've always said that, this tribe is the most corrupt of all tribes in Nigeria but we didn't seem to know because they always cover themselves up. They would say its government money after all. The loot ought not to have been repatriated during Buhari's administration because he doesn't even have any decorum to receive such.
This generation of reckless beings would destroy this country unless something urgently is done to rescue her.

The government of the day is filled with all manners of criminals, most of whom have been convicted of criminal offences outside Nigeria but was cleared back home from the speaker, to deputy senate president, to some of the ministers. Not many Nigerians ever knew Bagudu, the current governor of Kebbi State ever served a jail term in the USA over money laundering, most of which was from Abacha....and they always tell us that no criminal or ex-convict can hold any political office in nigeria according to our constitution, blablabla. No wonder the international community never takes us seriously. They already know the antecedents and secrets of all those who make up the leadership in the Nigerian politics, which was why USA insisted they'd monitor how the repatriated money would be spent by Nigerian government as enumerated and if diverted, the rest would not be released and this generated a lot of reactions in the media. They're always smarter than us. They know how insincere our leaders are.
The same bagudu of a man was cleared back home and had become senator and now governor under the government claiming to be fighting corruption....corruption kee dem dia.

Misleading information the FG Agrees that the entire sum will be paid to the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), and will be used in expediting the construction of the three major infrastructure projects across Nigeria – namely Lagos – Ibadan Expressway, Abuja – Kano Expressway and the Second Niger Bridge. But agent of misinformation and fake news saying the opposite like the money will be send to Kebbi state or governor Bagudu

The part I don't understand is why Obasanjo signed an agreement that the money be remitted to Bagudu.

Well, rather than accuse any government, I'll rather chill to know the details of the contract. I believe the story and details is bigger than what we see here on Nairaland

If that money is going to the current rail project, forget it..it's gone. Thesame project these Chinese claimed financing and would be getting their money back when the rail starts functioning. I've said it before, thank God there is BVN..let the government start paying into every Nigerian bank account, enough of recovering money and relooting by greedy people in power..we won't be surprise if that money will be collected and used for the agency they plan to set up for bokoharam members, Nigeria I hail thee

Its Shamefull Bagudu a criminal in US can become a President in Nigeria.. this guy practically confessed to laundering money for the Abacha Family and US only released him because he agreed to inform them of more loots in exchange if he gets tried in Nigeria

Now what did President Abba Kyari plan to do? release money Abacha stole from Nigerians back to Bagudu who helped in stealing it in the first place, and to make matters worst they tried fooling the US who are looking for every means to continue holding on to the money

Abba Kyari is just writing his own history in a very wrong way.. soon 2023 is coming and he has managed to piss a lot of people off both local and internationally

I don't blame Garba Shehu, it's the useless paid Nigerian journalist who can't ask the right question except to be posting what they want them to post. What happen to asking if it's true they are paying Atiku Bagudu the 100million, just yes it No

Bagudu should come and explain to Nigerians what kind of job, work, company he owned to have 100 million dollars before 1998 and taxes he paid, before that money should or will be given to him... This matter is very simple.
