Exactly six weeks after he took office, President Goodluck Jonathan today updated his cabinet to 31 Ministers.  He had vowed he would have the full cabinet, which is expected to be made up of 42 persons, in place in two weeks.

A statement from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Anyim Pius Anyim, also announced changes in the cabinet today, as approved by the president. Among them:

    Yusuf Suleman has been moved from the Ministry of Transport to the Sports Commission as Chairman and Minister after he reportedly demanded huge bribes from NIMASA last week. Mr. Suleiman was slated to be dropped from the cabinet but the Sultan of Sokoto reportedly intervened; Idris Umar is now the Minister of Transport;  Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade moves to the Ministry of Police Affairs; Mrs. Olajumoke Akinjide becomes Hononorable Minister of State, FCT; and A new Ministry of Communication Technology.

The government said the new Ministry would be headed by a Minister "who is very versatile in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT), to give it the desired focus in view of the critical importance of ICT in driving a modern economy.". Mr. Jonathan also made Olusegun Aganga, the former finance minister,  the  "Trade and Investment" minister. The new ministry is expected to bring investments into Nigeria.

Jonathan's cabinet is mostly his old cabinet from the previous administration.  His critics question his snail pace as well as lack of courage to bring in a healthy dose of technocrats to generate new ideas and momentum.

While he has preached a so-called "transformational agenda," Jonathan has so far failed the first test of transparency by failing to declare his assets or generate an offensive against corruption, Nigeria's perennial enemy.  Indeed, cracks may already have begun to appear in the fabric of his government, as the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mohammed B. Adoke, declared during his screening at the Senate that the anti-corruption agencies do not properly understand their their statutory mandates, and that they lack the capacity to investigate and prosecute economic crimes.  But it is to those agencies that Jonathan pledged to hand his war against corruption.

The updated cabinet is as follows:

Hehehehe. Fresh Air!

Who no know say Jonathan is a lilly livered weak Preso with many people to pay back.

GEJ has always practiced politics of settlement at its finest.

No one has entrenched the "ills" of Nigeria ie Federal Character more than GEJ. Almost every big boy from every region in PDP must be settled with an appointee in the cabinet. GEJ is a man with too many debts to too many crooks.

The biggest joke in this list is Arc. Mike Onolememen- Tony Aneih's appointee as Minister of Works.

In other words, that ministry is dead in the water and Anenih will be given free hand to rape and pillage the Nations infrastructure like he has always done. Travellers on Benin-Ore-Lagos are still cursing that mega-thief till today.

^^^ How did you arrive at such conclusion. There are 7 nominees from sw. 1 from ogun declined the offer.The one from ondo is yet to be cleared. Out of 5 assigned, 3 are 'full' ministers while 2 are minister of state. Fair enough. IMO.

Are these supposed to be Ministers of a northern state or ministers of the FRN?
Why so many hausas on the list?  shocked

From my understanding, it seems this govt will revolve around Mrs Iweala. She seems to be what GEJ is banking on.

@FYZ Stranger A.K.A Iragbjile

Shut the h.ell up with your whinning and get on with life. Its a useless govt. anyway.

@OAMJ,

He's to be appointed as Nigeria's amb to the UN according to speculations. What a very useless govt on arrival.
Re: Jonathan Assigns Portfolio To 31 Ministers! by jumobi1(m): 1:53am On Jul 12, 2011
Ajumogobia was one of the good ministers. He would be good as UN Perm Rep which in some countries is the equivalent of Minister. I think GEJ just wanted good representation at the UN.

He had to take a minister from each state. What I would have done is make half of the Northerners Ministers of State and not taken more than one minister from each northern state. It really has too Many Northerners.

Gej(alias Odechukwu) is soooo lazy and confused, he's trying to build the government around Madam Ngozi, she can't perform magic in every sector of the economy, appointing 17 northerners as ministers to appease the region would not solve Nigeria's problem,  most of the minsters are all recycled gluttons,
Breath of fresh air indeed
