Recently,I finished reading "dark star safari", a travel novel written by Paul Theroux sometime around 2002...it detailed his journey from Cairo to Cape town by land through Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia,Kenya, Tanzania,Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe,Uganda and South Africa. I think I found out enough from the book to know how much Kenya has been depending on food aid for long.. . U should read it too.

I will keep repeating to you guys that GDP is an outdated system to measure progress or wealth or well being of countries. GDP ignores the efficiency of the banking sector and the local stock market at retaining wealth in a country.
GDP disregards income levels in a country. In certain countries a large portion if GDP flows to the government and therefore has little impact on private wealth creation. Example Qatar, SA, Bahrain etc.
