Hospitals in the area you live are a little more competitive though...so she needs a little patience and maybe increase her applications to hospitals around london

TL;DR - Opinion: What I did to land a job in the UK and some other tips/experience - for non medical professionals.

Good evening everyone, I hope everyone is doing great.
I want to share my job search experience after moving to the UK in order to encourage those currently hunting.

I am a very worrisome person by nature and was already weighed down after barely two weeks of staying at home - yeah, you heard that right

Anyways, I realised that I wasn't even getting any calls for interview and knew I had to change something. After discussing with some friends, I got some recommendations which I followed. Then got a couple interviews and two offers after one month of searching; including an offer from one of The Big Four, after three stages of interview.

Here are some tips:

1. Prayer. Yeah, call me a typical Nigerian but I believe in God. Pray to whatever your heart accepts. It works and also keeps you hopeful.

2. Edited my CV to add a new section called 'work eligibility' and simply proceeded to add 'eligible to work in the UK'. At first I mentioned my Visa type within this section and that's part of what cost me opportunities because most HRs don't even understand what each VISA type entails.

3. Removed the locations of my previous experience on my CV. I just left the company name and the duration I was with them. This is really important because most recruiters just assumed that the companies were in the UK and would feel surprised when I mention that it wasn't during a phone/face to face interview. Well, it gives me a chance to get to the interview stage and prove my skills.

4. Subscribed to LinkedIn premium. You can do trial if you haven't used up your trial in the past. It lets you message recruiters and most importantly, see everyone who viewed your profile. Some recruiters would view your profile in private mode and if you have premium, you'd see them. Then you can send them a message or simply go to their website to either send an email or look up opportunities in the organisation. For them to view your profile, it means that they're most likely recruiting. I also recommend being active on LinkedIn. If you find someone you think appears approachable at a company you have applied to, send him a message and introduce yourself. Get ready to be ignored though but trust me, a good number of them would respond. Also reach out to all the Nigerians you know in the UK and let them know you're searching. Don't let your ego come in your way. They might not have any job for you but will offer a useful tip most likely.

5. Please know your stuff. Or at least read up and learn all the skills involved in the role you're interviewing for. This is a common knowledge but I just felt like mentioning it. Remember you'd be dealing mostly with recruiters who are really busy, they don't have time for bs and will waste no time in letting you know you wasted their time.

6. Please get ready for rejection emails even after checking all the right boxes, don't ever let them weigh you down though. I got a loooot of rejection emails and was ignored sooooo much by some firms but I made sure I applied to a looooot of roles as well to increase my chances. At the end of the day, only a few invites will do the magic.

7. The idea of getting something small while you wait is awesome. However, make sure that what you're doing while applying for jobs doesn't interfer with the job search. For example, don't take up jobs that won't let you pick calls or check your mailbox once in a while. In fact, if you've got someone taking care of your needs and who is understanding too, please forget about taking up something small and fully concentrate on hunting the big fish; channel all your energy and resources towards your job search and something good will come up.

*** The stuffs I've written here are things that worked for me and my humble opinion. It doesn't mean it's perfect or the best way to do anything.

A bad experience:
Just like Naija, there are marketing jobs here. No one told me that when I was hunting.
I was once invited by one company for interview. After the interview, they claimed to like me and invited me for the next stage.

I went for the next stage, omo these people assign me to two other employees who took me to London Bridge to be sharing fliers. Now don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that if it puts food on the table but these guys were so deceptive and manipulative eh. They kept telling me about how the flier part is just for entry level and that I'll start making sales in no time and be promoted to a manager who sits in the office
Plus, you only get paid based on the sales you make
I couldn't deal with their lies and had to just tell them I'm not interested again.

Na this same company interview I dey go, then miss road. City mapper carry me go enter fast train, I even go siddon for VIP. Na so them come ask me for ticket, I told them what ticket? I showed them Oyster and baba was like "nah Oyster doesn't work on this train, you need a ticket". Him no even pity me as JJC, just collect 13 Pounds from my debit card. I for swear for this company but I've forgiven them. I should've seen the signs from the onset.

Their name is eslupauqE (spelt backwards because I don't want search engines to index this comment).
Please be careful while searching so that you don't end up losing money and valuable time.

Thank you so much for this contribution, it's been so helpful and encouraging. I'm also at this stage currently, though I'm applying from Nigeria.

I just started sending applications on Jan 15th this year precisely, and to be frank I can't count the number of rejected mails I've gotten, but I have also gotten some good feedbacks, I got one Skype interview and one Google Hangouts voice interview, I also got two other positive feedbacks in my mail.

The Skype Interview company said they liked me, but couldn't do Visa sponsorship and needed someone for urgent recruitment, that's how that one closed.

The Google Hangouts interview said they also like my work, but that the role is going to be an unpaid internship role for 3months, so I'll work remotely in Nigeria for these three montha, and if I pass, I'll be retained permanently, I don't know if they'll be willing to now process my Visa sponsorship after the 3months, so I haven't gotten back to them on that yet.

The other two said they'll try to arrange for my Visa sponsorship, so they'll get back to me.

I won't lie, at some point I just stopped applying because it was as though, there was no progress at all.

But reading this your write up has encouraged me again, I just set up my LinkedIn profile early this month, I might just have to do the premium membership thing to boost my chances.

You're welcome. For these remote guys, I would recommend you try to get a permanent remote role with them. Don't put too much hope on the other guys asking promising to process your VISA. It's still possible though.

You're welcome. For these remote guys, I would recommend you try to get a permanent remote role with them. Don't put too much hope on the other guys asking promising to process your VISA. It's still possible though.

Even 15 years (2005) there was international driving license in lagos. It is not a new thing

i mean course that can make someone secure a job after graduation in uk aside from medical related courses..

Thing is I'm currently expecting with by resumption will have an infant God's willing.

I've been trying to see how possible studying full time will be especially with an infant. Hubby says child care is quite costly not sure how possible it will be for us adding that to our expenses.

Just got a job as a care worker but I really wanna go to school. I'm reasoning if I could have other better choices that could be part time.

@ Stenon kindly advice on how I can kickstart a teaching career in the uk. I presently have no qualifications or experience as regards teaching.

With your geology bsc there are other ways to package yourself and enter a company or NHS admin staff and grown from there.... it will even give you a similar or more salary than a teacher. You just need to find a sector and know how to package the packageable. however all might depends on what type of Visa

Do you mean Tier 2 dependent visa

One mistake our people make it thinking we are somehow bounded forever by educational qualification so when they relocate they still keep looking at only areas where their have education back ground regardless of if they have relevant work experience...……. make sure you free yourself from that . You have many transferable skills and shouldn't be bounded by your educational qualification or lack of educational qualification in a particular area …….. I am in IT implementation now both my BSC and Master is in something totally different . Find an area, package the packageable and keep trying to target how to enter...… Learn how to package and most importantly learn whatever that area very WELL so that when the door opens, you deliver well which keeps in you inside that door and leads to more open doors
