The Italian infected with coronavirus arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday but the disease was not detected at the Lagos international airport, his port of entry, because it was still at the incubation stage, Nigeria’s health minister, Osagie Ehanire, has said.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how the Lagos and federal governments, early Friday, confirmed the coronavirus case, the first in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Mr Ehanire explained that the Italian was able to get into the country without being detected at the airport because he was asymptomatic (disease was still at the incubation stage) at the time of entry.

“So, it is not that it is a failure of screening. The screening went very well
. The information I have this very morning is that he is stable, so all people will not be equally severe.”

This implies that the disease can be missed in a person who is yet to have symptoms and that is why WHO and the government have been advising that people who have had contacts with infected persons should be quarantined for at least 14 days.

Mr Ehanire, at a press briefing in Abuja, said they are opting for 14 days self-quarantine because much information about the nature and pattern of the disease is still unknown.

He also said health agencies in Nigeria have begun contact tracing of those who might have been in contact with the Italian.

He said the Italian showed no symptoms of the disease until Wednesday which was why he presented himself to the hospital.

He has since been isolated and treatment has also commenced, the minister said.

Mr Ehanire said Nigeria is taking the contact tracing for people who have been in contact with the unnamed Italian seriously and would be contacting those in the same flight as the Italian.

“We have started working to identify all the contacts made by the patient since he entered Nigeria, even those with him on the aircraft.

“We are working to find out where this gentleman was, where he sat, those who sat around him and set up a monitoring team for all the passengers and crew members of that flight in order to get information and monitor their state of health.

“We will advise anyone who has any symptoms to report and be monitored and be checked,” he said.

Outbreak

As of Friday afternoon, there have been more than 83,000 global cases, with infections in every continent except Antarctica.

The disease which was first detected in Wuhan, Hubei Province in China has killed at least 2,800 people worldwide, the vast majority in mainland China.

Outside China, health experts have raised concerns about the spread of the virus in three countries, South Korea, Iran and Italy.

The virus has since spread rapidly from these three countries to places where it was formerly not available.

At least 11 European countries and Nigeria now have confirmed cases of coronavirus, many of which have been traced to Italy.

So far, South Korea has the biggest outbreak outside China, with 2,337 cases.

The health minister advised that to contain an outbreak in the country, Nigerians should avoid crowded gathering, wash their hands and use hand sanitizers when needed. He also cautioned people to stay about a metre away from people coughing, sneezing or feeling feverish

Treatment

Mr Ehanire said Nigeria will be able to provide early diagnosis and treatment to confirmed patients as it is already putting in place mechanisms to do so.

He said China has shared its treatment procedures with Nigeria to assist the country’s response to the treatment of the new coronavirus.

“China knows more about the disease and they have made some successful treatments.

“They have shared the treatment procedures with Nigeria and this will assist in the treatment of confirmed cases,” he said.

How come Nigerians never bring in these viruses like Ebola and COVID from their trips abroad? Why it is usually a foreigner? I mean Nigerians travel like crazy.

If it can sneak into America, Europe, south Korea and Japan. It can definitely. Sneak into Nigeria. meanwhile some vital information.
What is the incubation period for the coronavirus?
An incubation period is the time between catching an illness and showing symptoms of the illness. Current estimates suggest that symptoms of COVID-19 usually appear within around five days or less in most cases, but the range could be between one and 14 days.

What are the symptoms of the new coronavirus?
Fever, dry cough, trouble breathing, and sometimes pneumonia are the common symptoms of COVID-19. There have been some reports of gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea) before respiratory symptoms occur, but this is largely a respiratory virus.

Those who have the virus may have no obvious symptoms (be asymptomatic) or symptoms ranging from mild to severe. In some cases, the virus is life-threatening or fatal.

Currently, it seems that most people who get sick will recover from COVID-19. Recovery time varies and, for people who are not severely ill, may be similar to the aftermath of a flulike illness. People with mild symptoms may recover within a few days. People who have pneumonia may take longer to recover (days to weeks). In cases of severe, life-threatening illness, it may take months for a person to recover, or the person may die. https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/as-coronavirus-spreads-many-questions-and-some-answers-2020022719004

This guy knew he had this disease and purposely came to Nigeria to spread it, but God pass am. Everywhere you go on social media, there is an outrage on why the disease is not yet in Africa, as if we offended them in a previous life.

These other nations want the virus to do maximum damage on the continent.

The same Africa especially Nigeria that was making mouth that the diseases this and that..

You all think people from other countries don't read what is typed online

Now it has come. The whole world would ban Nigerians from entering their country as if it was first detected in Nigeria.

When people won't keep their mouths and fingers shut.

I expected everything should be done on a low key, setting quarantine at the airports, buying of equipment, and many more so as to catch those who think we ain't serious.

The part in bold may not be correct. We must stop believing everything that happens is a conspiracy against us. The virus has done more damage in Asia and Europe. It’s preposterious to think someone will deliberately get infected just so as to be able to spread it in Nigeria.

Very stupid health minister. China has which treatment? Is it not China that is still beating people who don’t want to stay at home and barricading them in their homes so they can die a miserable death. In order to contain the virus. China that is still telling terrible lies about the true victims count. I pity Nigeria.

This health minister should be sacked. He’s one of the people misleading this government on this disease. He obviously does not watch TV and is highly gullible. Even more sensible governments than China like Japan are shutting down schools. This fool is still releasing rubbish statements. That Coronavirus must reach you. Idiot.

Why didn't they quarantine him knowing Italy has second most affected persons? Last weekend games in Italy were suspended, some games during the week were played behind closed doors, that's being proactive.
Ighalo came from China, he was kept away from the rest of squad to monitor him, that's proactive. Many countries have people coming from counties infected quarantined but Nigeria, no. They have no excuse

You did not watch the videos of the Chinese deliberately spitting and coughing on people, elevators, door knobs, tissues, packaged goods etc to purposely infect others?

Seems you have not dealt with white supremacy. The whites that were sterilizating Kenya women, purposely injecting South Africans with vaccines filled with HIV virus, and the white lady that pretended to be a doctor and killed 200 Uganda children came from space, right? Likewise those that went to Northern Nigeria and used the children as testing subjects for their new drugs came from Mars, right?

No country can shut her doors against a virus. Once people move from country to country, the virus will spread. How can a virus that has been confirmed in about 53 countries be prevented from entering the country? Even US, UK, France, Italy, Japan, South Korea etc couldn’t prevent the virus from entering their respective countries. Accusing the Italian of deliberately coming to spread the virus is just ridiculous.

The best response to the virus is to contain it as quickly as possible. This is a global crisis and government all over the world must coordinate an urgent global response to it.

Italy has been canceling games and cancelling a lot of events because of the spread of this virus. Some people panic and want to do their worst when they are dying. They target others who they hate and let me tell you, the most racist set of people I have met till date are Italians.

The Liberian guy came to deliberately spread the virus in Nigeria. We remember that he ripped a drip which spilled his blood everywhere. He knew he was exposed to the virus in Liberia. He was sick and deliberately came to Nigeria to spread it when he could have gone to America where he was a resident and his immediate family was located. So yes, people are more wicked than you think. Don’t be ridiculous

Your points are valid. I may be wrong but I don’t think the Italian came into Nigeria to deliberately spread the virus. From what I have read so far, he wasn’t aware of his status until he fell sick in Ogun State.

What the government should have done is to put people coming from high risk countries like South Korea, Iran, and Italy under automatic quarantine.

The Coronavirus is a virus that can spread even during the incubation period. This means, a person may not show symptoms but can still spread the disease.

Incompetence will not kill us in this country.
