But there is no way an entire country will be catching coronavirus. I get your point, but like in every economic crisis, propaganda or mildly put, information, is always key. Before you know it, everybody catches the diluted or exaggerated media view, effectively programming the mind.

During the 2008 crisis, Most businesses just went into limbo because they were programmed to believe the world was coming to an end. People were just sitting on their cash - nobody was willing to spend because nobody was spending. Everybody caught the bug!

There is a lot of fear in the air right now, and it is not doing anybody any good. That same fear is the reason somebody will be willing to pay 500% more for a hand sanitizer! Same reason you see people walking about with surgical masks, which have been proven to be useless. An Italian (who is most likely to pull through the infection) enters with symptoms, and the country goes hysterical. Is that the way to manage crisis? During ebola, propagandists made people believe that drinking salt and bathing with same was a sure cure. In a week in Enugu, many traders abandoned their trades and became instant salt merchants. The result? Excessive salt intake killed more people than ebola itself!

The current virus sure has economic effect, but it is not as bad as most think. I am more realistic than optimistic, because we have all seen it before, again and again. This too, shall pass sooner than we expect! cool cool

You say the economic crisis isn't as bad?

China has the worst data in February 2020. NASA viewed China before the outbreak to see the level of polution in the air and viewed it during the quarantine. You will be amazed that the air was clear in China grin grin

This means that industries were shut.

Even during SARS, Hyundai in Korea said they never shut their plants. This time, they shut their plants. Auto companies had to shut because they get their parts from China and these suppliers (based in China) were not working.

Many companies had issued profit warnings.

Or is it banks? HSBC said they will be cutting 35,000 jobs. Some Airlines are in bankruptcy because they depend on Chinese passengers.

As for me I’ve disposed 65% of my portfolio (All banking stocks) at approximately 15% loss. I’m just left with WAPCO and Dang Sugar.
Let’s watch from the side lines.
I don’t even care about the dividends anymore when my capital is at risk.

Capital Preservation... Good morning oooo.

It is because the Coronavirus has now made Zenith Bank a candidate of N13. Zenith Bank is never a stock of N13. if we get to buy at this price, we will look for money and buy. if it gets to N10, we will buy more. We are not going to panic because NSE is losing points. Congratulations to those who are loaded in cash.

Bear in mind that just 4yrs ago with CORONAVIRUS outbreak ZENITHBK sold below for less N9 while both GTB and STANBIC sold for less than N13.

You are absolutely right. Take for example, so many traders was rejoicing last night when the future opened green, but emotionally they went in with the hope that market will bounced back this morning...and presently market Dow is down already with 350 points. Emotions in stock market is a death sentence to your capital. If people can stay away from it, they will do better than expected. Why would I buy a stock of 13 Naira @25 because of dividend of 2+ Naira? That’s like 45% down in capital? This means one need More than 50% rise in price to break even not talking of profit....It is about facts over fantasy

Anyone that is putting money in this market now needs to be careful and back himself up with very powerful TA. Any rise is transient.

There will be more downside

Oga, you need to be more realistic than this oo.

First of all, the major issue with this outbreak bothers on its contagion. Currently, its estimated that every 1 person who is infected infects two to three people. This is made more complicated with emerging facts that people become contagious before showing symptoms. These majorly(highlighting the difficulty to contain the virus) are the reasons governments around the world are taking drastic measures.

The measures taken by several governments around the world to guard against the outbreak or further spread of COVID-19 within their borders (which are not excessive in my opinion, compared with battling a full blown outbreak like China is and recently some other countries (South Korea, Italy, Iran) are doing) are the real drivers of negative impact on the global economy.

And should the outbreak get into pandemic proportions, it will get worse. The best news, in that instance in particular, naturally speaking, would be either or both of invention/discovery of a cure or vaccine.

Over 75% of my stock market fund is invested in the market but that will not mean I won't say the truth when I see it.

If it is not quickly addressed, everyone will catch it. That is why they use extreme measures to contain it. Measures like quarantine, closures of companies, churches, mosques. In Wuhan, we read they sealed buildings to prevent people from leaving the buildings. These has economic implications.

If you do nothing, everyone will catch it.

The bolded makes the difference - countries are taking drastic measures to check the spread. While they are at that, the economy will suffer, but there is always an end to all these, isn't it? I cant remember the name of the analyst who likened stock selloff to one's stomach being pushed inwards. It gets to a point where it cannot go in anymore. The market is currently bearish, and as expected, the sentiments sway accordingly. If it goes bullish, and is sustained, most wont remember this period.

Coming back to NSE, would you really say the slaughter going on is caused by corona virus?

It is well my brother. The thing is that most who die from it have other underlying medical conditions. Most infected people recover, and that is important to note. Like I said before, this too, shall pass.

Shalom.
