One thing I noticed is that some people do run away from getting dividend with the intention to come back after markdown, but I just think if the fund is not urgently needed, one can always buy, get the dividend and still wait for price appreciation later.......that's if the person didn't enter at bargain price.
Me, I will soon become an investor grin ...but will still be doing jijo sha. tongue

PS: This is just my opinion.

You must have been scammed. There is no way you will buy a shares before the qualification date and be denied your dividend.
pluto09:

I have shared my experience on this before.
I bought a stock 2 days to qualification date and I was not paid the dividend.
The explanation giving by my broker was this nonsense T+3 days settlement thing.

I will like others to share their experience.

It is based on the calculation that the stock would be marked down and the likelihood of it dropping further cannot be excused. They also point to the withholding tax that will be taken away from the dividend, but what they also completely ignore is the cost of selling and buying back the same shares. It is possible that UCAP may likely sell at N2.50 or less next week. It is their own way of preserving their capital and giving themselves bonus shares (you have more units of the same stock)

Who then collected the dividend declared? The registrar or the person that sold to you?

Even on the EXACT DATE of qualification of div/script issue, a BUYER still qualifies at the expense of(ahead of) the SELLER !! ...that's why a UCAP BUYER qualifies today.
A seller will need to exit from Monday Feb, 9th(which begins the CDR) to qualify.

The dual fact that u can buy and sell securities the same day, and that the register of booklet(by a coys registrar) closes at no less than after the qualification date explains it all.

You got it. One thing they easily forget is the fact that the dividend could be used to buy more units much later once it's paid, which translates to having more units and average cost also reduce.
In addition, when some see the bargain, they still run.
Peter was waiting for UACN at N7, it got there and he picked race again grin shifted goal post to N6 but the stock reversed at N7 grin

Zenith and Stanbic are not mates. Zenith is a solid business. There are no audio earnings anywhere.

Goodmorning house,
Pls I need clarification on this. If Ucap close today at N3 and on Monday the ref price is N2.50k meaning it's been marked down. If I sell same day(monday), will I still be paid dividend?

Many thanks in advance

My experience is that i bought a wrong stock by pressing wrong button. I discovered about 3 hours later and tried a sale and it went through with both transactions registering in my in-house account. Both transactions via online platform.

Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by CashDiMkpa: 12:15pm On Mar 06, 2020
Another noteworthy experience in the analogue era is exactly the scenario you painted although in this case i placed order about 2 days before qualification date and broker said he bought. About a year later when i went to Registrars for unclaimed dividend they said i had none. I went back to broker and saw from my statement that they didn't buy till weeks later. Infact money i had given the so called staff didn't get into my account till the day they bought. I knew the guy had played a fast one and collected my dividend from him with threat to report to his bosses.

Many here can guess the broker. They have been mentioned here in last few days.
