The problem is that lots of Nigerians lack viable, marketable and employable skills. Even in US here, you see lots of them driving Uber up and down or doing scams when you can be making a killing legitimately. The educational systems in Nigeria need to be overhauled else that country will not develop. They keep junking out thousands of half-baked 11 Likes |

[quote author=4dor post=87244144]If there's one thing I've learnt from this thread it's that the poverty in Naija is real. Poverty also starts as a mindset. Mid Level Software Developers earn around 250-400k in Nigeria. Seniors earn 500k upwards, in fact sometime last year there was a vacancy in Lekki and the Salary was between 800k - 1m. If you work remotely for a foreign company as a senior and you're good, you can even hit 1.5m monthly. Before you try to argue, I've been in this industry for the past seven years. If you want to be like this get a laptop and start learning how to code. [please any recommendation on Institutions that offer qualitative training on this?] 1 Like 1 Share |

Toward the end of 2016, I was among a batch of staff who were laid off as the bank I was working for as a contract staff was "restructuring". My role was impacted by the restructuring and I didn't even have time to figure out a plan B. My salary at the time was #80,000 and I remember my mother cried more than I did. My former boss (God bless him always) recommended me to an outsourcing firm and in less than two weeks I was again employed, but with a lesser salary of #60,000. I worked for over a year then started making up my mind to move on. An opportunity came, with a Commercial Bank in one of the French speaking countries in West Africa, it was quite tempting but the fear of starting all over in a foreign land and leaving a Master program I started less than five (5) months back and an apartment I paid #300,000 for two years rent (the landlady refused to refund me my rent until I get a new tenant for her) - I lived there just for 6 weeks. My fiancée believed in me more than I did and encouraged me to accept the offer. I had to auction everything I had (some former colleagues bought some of my stuff on credit with promises to pay but never completed the payment till date) and moved on. It was a nightmare in this country; the system was still archaic, like the banking system in Nigeria back in 2004, the culture and the food were different. If I had enough money on me I would have taken the next flight back to Lagos, I became depressed. My new employers did not honor the agreed terms I signed before I left Nigeria. My air ticket was not reimbursed and I had to pay for my hotel for over two weeks until a colleague, a national of this country offered to squat me as I was running out of cash. For the first time in my life, in July 2017, I missed Nigeria. My salary was just big on paper in Franc CFA but peanuts when converted to Naira. guys, I wished I had never left my job in Nigeria. God in his infinite mercy, during the course of my job as a marketer, introduced me to people and I discovered many multinationals I never knew had offices in this part of the continent. With my bilingual skills as an advantage, I started applying and knocking on doors. My colleagues warned me that I will be sacked if they knew I was applying for jobs elsewhere, but a man on the ground fears no fall. Three (3) months later I was called for an interview in one of the top four in the continent and I landed a job I didn't know existed six (6) months before that time. I now earn a 7 figures income when converted in Naira. I salute my fiancee, now my wife who fervently believed in me more than I did, and I return all the Glory to God. #Grateful_heart #Resilience 54 Likes 4 Shares |

Mine was bitter, but God made a way subsequently: it happened June 2nd 2018 when rumors Wer on d air dt some staff wud be laid off soon, I wasn't really perturbed because I had paid my dues(served). After some time nobody was sacked. To our surprise, it happened dt while our Studts were having their proposal defence, d admin secretary was in search of lecturers. Immediately I knew sometin was wrong, to my surprise I was giving a retrenchment letter, reason: no more money to pay salaries, I felt like d whole world was on my head but I drew solace from a supportive friend! I trusted God was taking me to a better place. As I speak I Cnt count my blessing after dt ordeal!!! 5 Likes |
