I guess u worked for Andela
oluwaseyi000:

Why we were fired?
I joined this company last year, few days after finishing my NYSC, they have the highest number of software developers in Africa and I was loving life, the salary is great with breakfast and lunch

They keep on employing so many software engineer with time the engineer become more than the available job, I saw it coming but I don't know what the board was thinking

2. How did the firing process happen?
We have a global (online) meeting which people are asked not to miss, I was not even listening very well to what they are saying, the president said there are more developer than engagement to they have to let some people go, a mail was sent to all impacted people and I discovered what has just happened

Almost 400 people has been fired across Africa

3. Aftermath of being fired… how did you feel, have you recovered, did you get something better?

The company is actually a great one, they brought in pychologist to speak with us, bring in different recruiter, and other stuff, most importantly the payoff was reasonable that I can afford a Mac laptop of almost half-a-million

Luckily for me I got another reasonable job in less than 3 weeks of been retrenched

I always laugh when people complain there is no job in Nigeria, less than 5 month after leaving my previous company I have turned down almost 4 other offers some even paying than my current one

I so much saw the retrenchment coming that I once created a similar thread as this https://www.nairaland.com/5352267/why-how-loose-last-job

How much do you think a bank MD earns?
Lol. They can't be paid more than the MD. All bank staff on the same grade are paid same salary no matter the unit.

Even as a business man or entrepreneur, you'd still rely on others (your customers, your staff) to earn your living (income)

Sometimes, it is not just luck, but ppl don't know where to look . Some ppl limit themselves to Nigeria job market whereas there are tons of foreign recruiters looking for such skills,For example, there is a recruiter in Canada that is sourcing for programmers. They arrange interview for you on Skype as soon as you apply with a programming skill set . And when they hire you, you are on your way to Canadian PR. They will prepare your working permit and travel docs in less than 2 weeks. Another country is Germany. If you have good IT skills, you look for jobs on one website like that ( i have forgotten the name) the website is in German so you will have to open with chrome and translate to English to apply. They give you employment visa even without the A2 German language which they usually require from other ppl from other occupations. So with UK, getting a global talent visa as an experienced IT person is easy.
I can go on and on.

The person I pity most is my son. He must start coding b4 8years.Each time I look at him,he doesn't know why? I will so mentor him that his peers will be no where close, God willing . I also pray for good health and finance to be able to send him to all the trainings that will shoot him fast.

Lolz

Trying to pity someone who was ready to pay you 28,000 British pounds (not even dollars) per year as a remote worker?

Your village people got you real good. Listen.

I knew Akin Alabi of Nairabet from years back before he even hammered. He told me one thing I will never forget: never cheapen the value of your product!

Ever since that day, I charge clients premium rates. You could have been the work hub coordinator setting the rates paid for accommodation and other expenses.

That's why God said that His people are destroyed not for lack of prayer and fasting, but KNOWLEDGE!

Oh! Na wa!

He mentioned the bolded...

I think I undervalued myself...

He kept asking me if 28k was base without allowance or not.

I later found out that fresh college graduates earn that amount. And the role I applied for was senior developer... He expected me to say something like 60k

It would be of great help if the masters in this IT field would recommend perhaps a training institute for beginners who would want to pick up a skill or two. I'm aware of a couple of online sites that can help. Sometimes it gets boring learning by self & at your own comfort.

I wouldn't mind a mentor.

Got a job on Upwork last year that paid 11 times what other Nigerian writers got. As much as 5,000 for a 400-word article. I was gearing to net 500k after commission and tax every month from the job.

Outsourced the job to someone because i was very busy with admission exams and boom! The fool was plagiarizing words carelessly and lost me the job.

These people that collect 750k salary for a month, what exactly do they do on day to day basis.

That salary is crazy

It’s actually the environment/work place that determines the salary personnel gets.

750k or above is a very common salary in the oil & Gas industry.
What do they do?
It could be any job role from IT to field operations, marine operations, SAP users at different levels.

People dey collect money abeg.
I know of a guy in Portharcourt who earns 90k /day that’s his day rate.
While others in the same company earn from 15k - 80k/day.

Imagine the guy that earns 90k, multiply that by an average of 22days . He works on weekends some times , that guy gets a minimum of N1.98M/month and gets higher when he works weekends.

Guys don’t allow poverty condition our minds to the point that we see 750k as not possible.
I repeat: it is a common salary in certain industry. Na for you to just get the opportunity to work in such an environment. And when you do, you will definitely deliver, because you get trained on the job.
Except your village people are after you.

well Life is a choice, you either work for your dreams (if its big enough) or you work for your boss to achieve his dreams all the rest of your life because your dreams are too pedestrian and basic; clothes, house, food, car etc

And you think am not contented with what I have?

An you don't believe that some people don't want to be like Dangote.

If everyone dreams to be like Dangote, who will teach your children?

My dream is to return to a happy home. The home can be a hut but as far as I am contented, my wife is contented, my children will learn to be contented, what more can I possibly want? A private jet? For what?

I don't subscribe to dreams, I subscribe to a career, to happiness, to a life that will not drive me cheat, steal or kill to make the dreams come true.

Yahoo boys have big dreams, to what end?

It's not "luck". What stands you out, is your skill set, experience and your weave of programming architecture.

There are tons of programmers who just have the basic skill set (they fall in the category you described). They barely scrap through jobs because they're just basic. Just like any other job, you can't expect to just be basic and be getting tons of offers.

If you're programmer who has a blend of skillset, experience, mastered prog architecture, versatile in in-demand stack, you won't be needing any luck, you'll be spoilt for choice. On LinkedIn everyday, HRs are approaching individuals with offers by just going through their profiles.

There is a shortage of skilled programmers, the market is still under staffed.
Andela is pivoting business models to cater for Senior devs because that's what the market needs.

In Germany, there is an increasing need for experienced devs and they'll latch on you from anywhere in the world. Nigerians are been given offers week in, week out to relocate to Germany.

My colleague turned down a relocation offer to Hamburg because they did not match his pay demand. They had to match his demand before he put pen to paper. How many Nigerians have such opportunities to turn down relocation offer to a first world country? Guess what? This guy I am talking about, has ALL the skillset and stack plus experience to be able to bargain...he didn't need luck.
ofcourse, we all know someone who got whipped up from linkedln or somewhere abroad, it's not a news flash.

And yes if one keeps upgrading himself like I said, you stand to earn higher income. it's simply means you are more valuable than before.

However the notion I am reading here that if one picks up some scripting languages in 18months he can be on his way to 500k or 750k is far from reality. That sentence cuts across a very small data set in nigerja.

Success takes Time and Hardwork and that's my message.

Not to forget that some of these programmers or IT guys who earn close to 1million or more don't always know as much as you think they know.

They are not really the Ronaldo's of the industry or the Messis in the coding ecosystem in the country, some just found grace/luck to be at that position.

Bro guys are out there hungry and armed with skills waiting for the breakthrough that will land them these big bucks

Put them side by side with some of these programmers earning 1million and above and they will crunch them for dinner with knowledge.

And it cuts across other IT fields too not just programming.

Life isn't always white/black, it isn't always 1+1 = 2.

However I still maintain the fact that if one keeps advancing his knowledge in RELEVANT FIELDS that are in demand overtime he will hit the top

But it may take time and not as quick as most people are painting it to be (1yr/18mnths)

That's my point sire.

Ofcourse only a FOOL will expect to learn code and within few months start earning millions. Like every other thing, there's a ladder to climb and sequence to follow.

The only guarantee you have learning and knowing how to code, is you have an in-demand skill which can put you on that trajectory to eutopia. There are so many freelancer devs earning a decent living and footing their bills without any contract jobs or full time jobs (very few fields out there avail such).

My point was that there's no dent of luck needed by skilled devs to make the big bucks because their skill is in demand, under supplied and the future.

I am a mathematics teacher I do private lessons,
So this woman called me for lesson, I billed her 100K per month (three times a week one hour thirty minutes each)

She begged for #60,000 I said no my last is 80K
(i don't know the spirit that was speaking on my behalf because I know that was not me, maybe the spirit of one of those motivational speakers saying never settle for less)

Because my current lessons are far below her offer at that time.

When I reach house the regret I have, I have never had that in my life, well, it was a lesson that helped me in future negotiations

GOD PLEASE HAVE YOUR WAY IN ME O,I REALLY NEED GOOD JOB AND WELL PAID JOB.# TIRED OF SLEEPING AND WAKE NIGLTD
Amen.

While you are waiting for that good job, my dear try to raise cash as little as 50k.

What for?
You are about to start a journey into the world of no more lack.
Just do a little market research on Facebook or online: use the following niche: fashion(clothing , shoe, bag), health (waist trainer, slimming tea, flat tummy, skin toner, teeth whitener) etc the list is endless. Please do a good research so you can identify hot in demand products. Make a pick and then boom start your online business.

Go online:
Use AliExpress, register , search well for good seller with a good price and good reviews
Buy like 30k worth of product.

Use the rest to do ads and campaign.
Facebook campaign, Social media campaign etc

If you have enough resources you can register a domain.
Then you can develop a sales page or landing page - which talks about your product. Add a payment processor, then start promoting this page on Facebook or anywhere online.

Please if you don’t have the resources, just do an attractive sales copy with a link to your WhatsApp or tg group where prospective customers can get to communicate with you to place their order.
Yours is to follow up and fulfill that order.

Note:
No one is giving you a guarantee of 100% success rate.
But what I can guarantee you is that you will add to your knowledge in the process, you will push yourself in the process , you will learn the art of trading through e-commerce in the process, and most importantly if heaven smiles on you your products will be hotly demanded for and you will be in money.

Please ensure you follow up your prospects and keep the testimonies as this will help drive more sales.
Try to satisfy your customers.
Never be tempted to scam anyone.
There is so much resources and wealth to be gotten online. Don’t mess it up.
One satisfied customer will get you 10 more.

Note:
It’s my first time out on this journey too.
I have learnt so much in the process.
I am no more where I used to be.

Less I forget, China is our primary source of supplies. With the current challenge posed by Covid-19/Corona Virus, there is a little slow down now.

Rugged guys like us are not deterred,
We are still buying and selling.
Delivery might be slow tho.
This is just for your additional knowledge.

Good luck.

With business its entirely a different ball game in the sense that you are not under the whims and caprices of your customer, rather they come looking for you because you have what they need at that point in time.
It's not that different my dear because you are usually not the only only selling what they want to buy.
If a client requests you presence 7am, you dress up and meet up.
If you don't another sharp person steals your customer.
In business, you are under the whims of your customers or else they run to your competitors. You give them what they demand or else they port.

Mtn had to start per second billing after Glo started it if not they lose customers.
